Flying Redbirds: Charles Schofield, John Fitzgerald, John Halk, Frank Treanor, Louis Gigante, John Herschauer, Nicholas Marino, Raymo d Tully THIS year's Varsity squad, proving itself to be among the best in the city and one of the finest ever produced at Hayes, took third place in the city finals, finishing the season with a record of 25 wins and 4 losses, and then won the Haggerty Memorial Tournament, spon- sored by Chaminade. After defeating the stars of the past in the Alumni game, the Varsity beat Fordham Prep, 7l-30. Captain Ray Tully erased the scoring mark previously set by Dermie O'Connell '45 with a total of forty-one points. ln the next three games the squad suffered two setbacks and then defeated St. Simon Stock, 78-53A The League officials later reversed the loss to Rice, however, when it was discovered that they had used ineligible players. The Hayes quintet then entered a seven- game winning streak, beating the Mount, Power, St, Ann's, Tolentine, and Manhattan Prep, They also took the measure of All Hal- lows and Fordham, the former team was beaten in a closely-fought game marked by the last- minute scoring of both fives. However, LaSalle broke up the winning streak with a one-point victory, Trailing by ten points at the half, the Redbirds rallied with Nick Marino's half-court one-handers setting the pace, With seconds to go, a foul and a lay-up shot by Gigante closed the score to 40-39.
