IIAYE ll Mlllll THE lllllll T 24-ll IN the most thrilling football classic of its his- tory before a record-breaking crowd -- HAYES BEAT THE MOUNT. For four years the students of Hayes had made the battle cry, Beat the Mount, resound through the corri- dors for weeks preceding the annual Thanks- giving encounter. But every year they had to swallow their pride and console themselves with the warning, Wait till next year. Well, this was the year. Playing an in- spired game and displaying more spirit than ever before, the Cardinals rode roughshod over the Mounties' forward wall and showed unpre- cedented power. Shifting from the T to a box formation for the first time this season ac- counted for most of the ground gained. Only a few minutes after the start of the game Di- Perna handed the ball to LaMonica who raced sixty yards for a touchdown, but a penalty nul- lified his fine sprint. However, it was not long before the Redbirds were rolling again. Peppy picked up 30 yards on another brilliant run and, following rwo line plays, carried it over from the ten. Before the half ended a pass from Gagliano to Baldasaro increased the lead to l2-O. During the third quarter neither team scored, but the Hayes defensive prowess pro- tected their lead. A third score came on the running of Devlin and a DiPerna-LaMonica pass of Sl yards which put the ball on the eight. From here DiPerna lugged it over. Then the second string went in and the Cards scored again. After O'Connor carried the ball to the 2, Peppy dived over the fourth and final score. Holding the Mount to a gain of only four yards, Hayes broke an old tradition and started a new one of beating the Mount.
