CARDI 'ALS CAPTURE MYTIIICAL Bllll X-MA HATTA CHAMPIIL HIP ALTHOUGH their final record of four victories, four losses and one tie is not too impressive, the Cardinals clinched for themselves the mythical Bronx-Manhattan championship by defeating all their opponents in those boroughs. They also managed to establish a few records over their predecessors, thereby making the season one of the most successful that Hayes has had since it inaugurated interscholastic football. ln the process of sinking Power, St. John's, Xaxier, and the Mount a new scoring record of l28 points was set by the team. Peppy LaMonica, clever, fast-stepping back of the team, tallied 8l of these to set an individual mark. This is remarkable because he had never played varsity football before and yet made the All-City first team. But the greatest thrill to everyone at Hayes from the principal to the youngest freshman came on Thanksgiving Day when we finally beat the Mount. The Cardinals were a well-coached, fast-moving, fighting team that dropped three of its four defeats by a single touchdown while their four victories were all won by considerable margins. Besides LaMonica, John Provenzano snared a berth on the first All-City team and John Baldasaro, our rangy end, made the second team. Dippy Diperna, captain of the team, would probably have garnered some honor for himself, had not a leg injury kept him on the bench for many of the games. l29 Father Peters and Coach Krywicki look grim during one of the games,

HAYES ll BlillllKLYlll PREP 7 NUMEROUS fumbles plus a touchdown in the third quarter resulted in handing Hayes a defeat in its initial game of the season. The first half saw the Cardinals successfully re- pulse several Brooklyn threats at its goal line. The spirited crowd of l0,000 watched Hayes march 88 yards in the final period to fall just short of that tying touchdown. In all it was a none too impressive victory for the future C. H. S. A. A. champions. Sumereau tries to elude a Brooklyn tackler as Siry moves in to help him. Siry picks up ten yards around end in the second quarter of the Power game. Costello lends a hand by taking out a Power lineman. A G' 13' 9 cf S 'f fe ,X 6 S lx 2 5 i ft 2 .. . Ei if tr S if lr it -2 ti ff as l' -A... A third period Panther touchdown marred a shut-out for the Redbirds. DiPerna runs back a kick in the fourth period of the Brooklyn game to pick up yardage. A A- A ,.4....4.
