Rehearsals are always interesting to watch. Father Dunn gives the cast a pep talk. THE ll'l'llR AL llllllllliil GLE ON the evenings of December 4th, Sth, and 6th the Patricians of Hayes, assisted by the girls of Aquinas Hall, presented The Eternal Quadrangle, an original play, written and di- rected by the Reverend Thomas A. Dunn, mod- erator of the Patricians. lt was enacted before capacity audiences, many of whom were re- turning alumni, and proved entertaining to all who witnessed it. The play represented Hayes in the Middle Ages and featured a tournament with their traditional rivals, Mont St. Michel. The action begins in a present-day history class in which the instructor exhorts his pupils to imagine themselves in the Middle Ages so that they might appreciate more fully the lesson he is teaching. The lights dim and in the next scene we see the same students enacting the roles they have imagined for themselves. Chaucer, conducting a class in Anglo-Saxon, has for his pupils Robin Hood, Francois Villon, Richard the Lion-hearted, and Machiavelli. When Merlin Merlin casts a spell on Matilda of Tuscany for ridiculing his art. takes over the next period to teach alchemy, news comes that the girls from Belmont Acad- emy have arrived to be vaccinated against a plague. Because Matilda of Tuscany insults Merlin, he puts a curse on her which causes her to repulse the suit of any admirer. Only a brave deed will break the curse. When no one will volunteer to represent Hayes in the tournament with Mont St. Michel because the outcome will probably be certain death for the contestant, Francois Villon offers himself, despairing of ever winning Matilda. He meets Saladin, his opponent, in fearful combat and, strangely enough, overcomes him. Exhausted after the battle, he falls into the arms of Matilda from whom the curse has been removed by Villon's brave deed. The play was especially timely because, for the first time in the history of its football com- petition, Hayes defeated its arch rival, Mount St. Michael, on Thanksgiving Day, making this year a standout year in Hayes history. Villon is amazed when Matilda rejects his suit.
