HE greatest honor yet bestowed on Cardinal Hayes High School came on March 5th when His Eminence, Francis Cardinal Spell- man made the school his first stopping-place on his return from Rome where he had been elevated to the dignity of the Cardinalate. Awaiting his arrival from the airport, the en- tire student body assembled on the campus and, as the car bearing the Cardinal ap- proached the school, greeted him with the strains of Ecce Sacerdos Magnus. ln the ad- dress to the students which followed, New York's new Prince of the Church publicly ex- pressed his affection for Hayes, and the appre- ciation of his words could be felt in the surge of pride experienced by all who heard him. As the Cardinal departed, after giving us the blessing of the Pope and an added holiday, the students cheered wildly. lt was truly a great day, one which the Seniors of '46 will always remember with pride.
