Gradually the team took shape and was ready for its schedule of matches which began on May l. Unfortunately the Ca- lendar goes to press before it can record the results. The following students comprise the team: K. O'Connell, J. Fitzgerald, and H. Gaffney, single players, D. Carmody and P. Roth, J. O'Shea and F. Cronin, doubles players. Since it was late in the season, no matches with individual schools were scheduled. However, we en- tered teams in the Catholic High School Tournament. The results were far beyond our expectations. We tied with Bishop Loughlin High School of Brooklyn for the city championship, and our doubles team of Patrick Hayden and Dominic Anastasio were awarded gold medals as the doubles champions of the city. This year we are competing with other schools and have already scored victories over Power and All Hallows. Despite the lqss of most of last year's squad we are looking forward to another successful season. We predict an ever increasing inter- est in this sport at Hayes as its activities become better known. 176

ii Swamming. PLASHY And the Red Mermen were off to a fine start, After two years Hayes finally organized the swimming team which had been eagerly awaited by so many of the student body. Under the direction of Father Loughman the squad of fifteen excellent swimmers diligently practiced to achieve perfection. Manhattan College graciously offered its pool for practice each afternoon, and the mermen made good use of it. They made the long trip gladly. Their diligent efforts were rewarded in the excellent show- ings they made against the seasoned teams of Manhattan Prep and Regis. Because of their late start, they could not arrange formal meets with other schools. Father Loughman is very pleased with this year's results, however, and looks forward to a prize-winning team next year. Captain Charlie McCarthy, Berberich, Donohue, Keegan, Lindgsen and Smith received letters for their splendid work with the team this year.
