Marty Schmitt B ITH the sun setting on the football and bas- ketball seasons spring became a reality. As the shadows grew shorter and sun hotter, we knew that the perennial unjustice done to the baseball team by the CALENDAR must recur. lt is unfortunate but necessary that we have to go to press this early in the season when only six games have been played. Winning the opening game and starting off on the right foot is a characteristic of Hayes teams. The baseball team was no exception. Showing great potential power the Cardinals de- feated Bryant H. S. in the opener, 5-2. After the encouraging victory of the first game the Hayes- men slackened their pace and lost the next two games to Xavier and St. Ann's respectively, In the fourth encounter of the season victory was once again ours when we defeated La Salle, 8-3, but the two following games brought defeat to our door. Although we have suffered four losses so far, the team is in fine shape with a strong pitch- ing staff consisting of Merrill, Wiederecht -and Schmitt. Our hopes ride with the team for the remainder of the season, feeling certain it will be a successful one. l72

'hack HE CALENDAR must close its pages to the track team with only one meet completed because of the necessity of meeting the printer's deadline, but we go with the assurance that we have a poten- tial champion in our track team. ln the first meeting of the season the Mercury-men of Hayes, sparked by the fine running of veteran Jimmy Ryan and the broad-jumping of Dempsey, easily outdistanced St. Ann's to emerge the vic- tors. We regret that we cannot follow the entire season and record its results, but we have no doubts about the outcome, knowing it will be a brilliant one for Hayes.
