DERM I E O'CONNELL Captain ALTHOUGH we can't boast-as we did last year-of having won the city champion- ship, we are nevertheless proud of the showing our hoopmen made. They took sec- ond place in the Bronx-Manhattan division of the Catholic High School League and second place in the Lt. Frank Haggerty Tournament, sponsored by Chaminade High School. At the close of last season we were faced with the loss of our dynamic coach, Nat Volpe, but fortune favored us and he returned to us this year to take up again the task of turning out a superior team. With Dermie O'Connell to set the pace, the team of Tommy Lambright, Phil Barreras, Matty Thompson, Bradley and John Connolly played a fast ball game and gave promise of being a championship club. Danny Mc- 'Laughlin lent valuable aid until his mid-year graduation, as did Gibbs, Roger Kennedy, Lyons and Baden. The team slackened its pace somewhat as the season progressed which accounts for the nine losses suffered. At times they were slow in starting, but usually they came back in the second half with the finesse that makes winners to score a decisive victory. The sure shots of O'Connell from any angle on the court were a definite advantage to the team and showed him to be a rare find. His brilliance in the Haggerty Tournament, in which he broke the individual scoring record, won for him the most valuable player's award and netted him a place on the all-tournament team. l-le also made the all-city first-string team. He was not the only Hayes player, however, to be so honored. The honorable mentions which Lambright and Barreras received reflect their excellent ball- playing. The team itself broke a record for the number of points scored in the tournament and deserves for its splendid showing the congratulations of all. Needless to say, Coach Volpe has our plaudits at all times. 160
