The following week a power-laden Brooklyn Prep outfit handed the Cardinals the worst defeat the school has ever suffered, 39-O. The team across the river rode roughshod over a weakened and injured Hayes eleven, scoring in every period. ln the third quarter the Hayes machine began to rumble, but the opposition was so great that our threat proved ineffective. Recovering from the Brooklyn defeat, the Cardinals showed their pre-season brilliance in vanquishing the Power Memorail aggregation at Fordham Field, l2-6. Scoring in the second and third periods, Hayes seemed to have the game in tow, but Power struck back at the beginning of the fourth quarter and provided an exciting finish as a goal-line stand in the closing minutes brought a well-earned victory. Brooklyn again proved to be too strong for the Bronxites when St. John's scalped the Redbirds in the next game, ZO-O. Hayes started off like a house afire, but the superiority ofthe opposing team was soon reflected in the mounting score. Displaying its vaunted offensive power for the first time in the season, Hayes revenged the decision of a few years ago by playing the part of an ungracious host and upsetting the gridders of Malden Cath- olic H.S., l947. Striking on the ground, in the air and via an inter- cepted pass, the Cardinals really gave their rooters something to cheer about. Frank Reynolds, John Connolly and Dick Lyons scored for our side. With their team leading Xavier l2-O at the half, Hayes rooters were confident of another victory, but during the second half ,the tables were turned and Xavier emerged victorious, l3-l 2. The greatest game the Cardinals played all season was against the Mount on Thanksgiving Day. Picked to lose by a large score, they amazed everyone by outplaying and outwitting Howie Smith's boys from the northern Bronx. Although they lost 7-O by a fluke play in the third quarter, it was a definite moral victory for the Redbirds. All of the color and excitement that accompanies the traditional rivalry between these teams was present, making it a memorable tussle. ln the last game of the season Hayes suffered another defeat at the hands of St. Mary's from Rutherford, N. J., who undoubtedly found victory sweet after the loss inflicted on them by our team last year. Considering the number of games won and the points scored, this year's record is not exactly impressive, but for the stamina and sports- manship displayed the team and coaches deserve great credit, We are hopeful that next year Hayes will produce a championship team which will satisfy our yearning to Beat the Mount.
