FATHER PETERS Moderator AL GROH Coach ED LARKIN Assistant Coach 40016611 T the start of the season Al C-roh, who succeeded Ward Cuff as coach of the Hayes eleven, and Ed Larkin, his assistant, were faced with the task of developing a team strong enough to meet the heavy schedule that had been booked for it. Relying on a number of the pre- vious season's veterans, headed by Captain Cieorge Hoolahan at right half, they lined up what promised to be a fine team, The backfield com- prised Hoolahan, Al Moran at quarterback, Frank Reynolds at left half and Gene Moran at fullback. Kenney and McS'nane were the stalwart ends, while McCarthy and Gillen made formidable-looking tackles. Larry Hughes and Matty Thompson were a pair of effective guards and Richard the Lion-hearted Lyons served at center. An unusual number of injuries hampered the team throughout the season, making the maintenance of a steady first-string eleven impos- sible. Bill Stetter, a newcomer, was injured so badly in the opener with Central Catholic of Lawrence, Massachusetts, that he was unable to play for the rest of the year. An old leg injury prevented Hoolahan from playing as effectively as he might have, and in due time Al Moran and Frank Reynolds were out of the lineup. This forced our coaches to switch Bill Kenney to quaterback and replace him in the line with John Connolly. lt was a wise move and both players showed to advantage in their new positions. Joe Quinn was a reliable asset to the backfield all during .the season. Picked to lose by most prognosticators, the team traveled to Law- rence for its initial game and won in a stunning upset, 6-O, over the highly regarded and heavily favored Central Catholic eleven. A bolt of lightning in the form of a third period pass from Allie Moran to Joe Quinn proved to be the margin of victory. ISO
