PUBLIC SPEAKING HE purpose of this club is to develop and improve the speaking ability of seniors to whom membership is limited. To say that Father Harry Wolff has done that is putting it mildly. The success which Frank Tuoti '45 at- tained in the Oratorical Contest sponsored by the American Legion manifests the sincere interest the moderator has taken in the mem- bers of this club and the efforts he has spent to achieve its end. Meetings were held weekly during the school year at which the members delivered speeches they had written and received instruc- tions in the art of voice placement, the mech- anics of speech and breathing. Plans are now being formulated for a public Oratorical Contest to be held in May. The winner of this contest will be presented with a gold medal for oratory at graduation.

DERMOTT O'CONNELL . JOHN CONNOLLY . HENRY KENNEDY . . . ROBERT FRESE . . . HARRY HECK . WILLIAM KENNEY . VINCENT DELANEY . FRANCIS GOTTRON . THOMAS McGRANN THE STUDENTS ASSOCIATION HIS year the students of Hayes were treated to the spectacle of a double election with all the attendant trimmings. January graduation took from us George Hoolahan and Walter Lee, who had Served since September as Student President and Student Manager respectively. Succeeding them were Dermott O'Connell and John Connolly. Under both regimes the Stu- dents Association functioned smoothly and well. A record-breaking response to Father Buckley's request for members of the Student Council resulted in a three-shift plan whereby a number of seniors served for a time and were then supplanted by another group. The spirit and devotion to duty of this year's Council should set an example to the many undergraduates for whose welfare they have been so solicitous. The stupendous support given the Association this year by the men of Hayes aided the many activities of the school which are unable to support themselves. ln turn, the members were recipients of many benefits, such as a subscription to the CHALLENGER, a copy of the directory which made its first appearance, the privilege of all athletic facilities and re- ductions in the prices of admission to all games and dances. Though many students are unable to play on school teams or take part in the many ac- tivities of the year, they can achieve the satisfaction of having done something for Hayes through their membership in the S. A. lt may appear to be a little to some, but a little here and a little there adds up t-o the tremendous success which has been enjoyed by the Stu- dents Association this past year. i s l I... 1--'w
