SENIOR DEBATI NG GROUP DEBATING lTH this report of its activities the Senior section of the Father Higgins Debating So- ciety concludes its most active forensic year. lt has been one in which an increased interest in public speaking has been manifested, and a steady growth in oratorical proficien- cy has been noted. The participants have gained an invaluable experience on the public platform that will serve to shape and enhance their respective careers. Most of all, this facility in speech will enable them to serve God and aid humanity better. During the year our debaters have competed against the various Catholic High Schools of the city and the surrounding area. Bishop Loughlin, St, Michael, Cathedral Girls, Cham- inade, St. Barnabas, La Salle Academy, Mount St. Michael, All Hallows, St. Agnes and lm- maculata are numbered among our opponents. Registering a substantial number of vic- tories, the speakers have in all engagements acquitted themselves in creditable fashion and have brought honor and glory to Hayes and to themselves. A special word of gratitude is due the following for their consistent loyalty and industry: Messrs. Walter Lee, Frank Tuo- ti, Gerard McLaughlin, John Gibbons, Andrew Panebianco, George Fischer, James and John Conroy, Edward Cain and Michael Mackin. Of especial interest and profit has been the group participation in two Panel Discussions. The first was sponsored by St. Barnabas High School on the theme, Catholicism and Democ- racy, in which thirteen high schools were rep resented, the second was held under the aus- pices of the Foreign Policy Association, wherein a large number of public, private and par- ochial secondary schools discussed topics of vital economic, political and moral import. The formal closing of the season will occur on the evening of May 29th, when a public debate between Cardinal Hayes and La Salle Academy will take place in the Brady Auditori- um. Unfortunately, the Calendar must go to press before it can record the result of this encounter. This year for the first time a Junior section of the Debating Society was formed to sat- isfy the needs and desires of Freshmen and Sophomores who are interested in forensic speaking. The experience they derived from this year's activities will make them valuable assets to next year's Senior section. We have every reason to expect that in the years to come the spoken word will be honored and utilized at Hayes so that, under the direction of Father Grace, we may ad- vance to goals whose attainment will redound to the good of God and man. 136

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA MUSIC HE success of the many musical organizations of Cardinal Hayes High School is manifested by the wide recognition they have re- fs. ceived in the few years the school has been operating, Their renown has spread so far that they have now become nationally known. The trophies and the plaudits they have won attest the time and the ef- forts they have spent to achieve the superior quality which is acclaimed by all critics. Under the direction of the Reverend John W. Ziemak the vari- ous musical groups labor until perfection has been attained before they perform publicly, And their public performances are numerous. Frequently they are called upon during the year to lend their talents to some program, whether it be sponsored by the school or some other organization. Whatever the request, their response is willing and worthwhile. Space does not permit us to mention all the achievements of the FATHER ZIEMAK Music Department this year, but we should like to indicate the high- lights, Over all other schools, the Symphony Orchestra was invited to play twice over the radio on programs sponsored by Catholic Charities, and they acquitted themselves nobly, They also played at the city finals of the Hearst Oratorical Contest which were held at the Museum of Art. The Concert Band played at all of our football games and were ever ready to devote their services to bond rallies and other worthy causes. The Choral Group, which likewise deserves much credit, was under the direction of the Reverend Anselm Llewellyn until his superiors transferred him and Mr. Frank succeeded him. The Swing Band of Hayes is so well known and praised that nothing more need be said in its favor, Suffice it to mention that the success of school dances is due in no small measure to the solid sending of this musical aggregation led by Ray Costa. The highlight of the musical year came with the annual Soiree Musicale which was pre- sented on the evenings of May Zl , 22 and 23. This event provides so much enjoyment for the many friends of Hayes' that they now look forward eagerly to its presentation. This year, as always, it was a magnificent success. We regret that we must go to press before the finals of the Catholic School Musical Festival are held, but we are confident that the musical groups of Hayes which are repre- sented will make the same splendid showing they made last year. To Father Ziemak and his assistants, Mr, Frank and Mr. Krueger, and to the many Hayes musicians we offer our cordial congratulations and appreciation.
