Izfdim Glad ' NEWCOMER to the galaxy of Hayes 8. activities in the past year has been e Italian Club which, under the capable 'ection of the Reverend Luke Ciampi, F.M., has progressed from toddling in- wcy to its present robust youth. To be re, it has not yet achieved full maturi- but the tremendous strides made dur- g the past year belie the successful hievements which appear to be its fu- re lot. The meetings of the twenty-odd mem- rs on Friday afternoons have been con- rned chiefly with lectures and discus- :ns on Italian art and culture. Atten- Jn has also been focused on ltalian mu- :, especially opera. Credit must be extended to James La- anna who, as the club's first president, id the groundwork on which the organ- ation will lean in future years. A con- itution and by-laws have been drawn J and officers elected in the efficient anner in which all Hayes activities are aerated. Clubs in other schools were mntacted, and the views exchanged frved to stimulate a greater interest nong the club's members. As the Ca- ndar goes to press, plans are being armed for an Italian Night at Hayes Jring the week of May lO which will 'own the achievements of this activity i its inaugural year. eww em FTER the mid-year examinations the Classical Club was organized, under the guidance of Father Nolan, with a view toward spending the rest of the school year in two main fields of activity, one, an introductory study of the Creek language, and the other, the completion of a project in the form of an attack upon a walled town by Roman troops. Those who are engaged in the study of Creek are the members who attained an average of 85? or more, those engaged in the project have an average ten points lower than their more learned brothers. This year membership in the Classical Club has been restricted to students of Freshman Latin. Next year, however, the club hopes to expand numerically and academically, thus integrating a greater number of students in another aspect of the cultural life of Hayes. i i3i

' ' Galencfcw HEN the new staff and moderator of the CARDlNAL'S CALENDAR set themselves to the task of producing the third edition of the yearbook, they were faced with the difficult problem of meeting the superior standards of the ,two previous issues. ln the course of the year additional problems presented themselves, such as the difficulty of obtaining photographic ma- terial so necessary for the informal sections, and the withdrawal of some members of the staff who graduated in January. lnexperience was another factor which heightened their worries. With stout hearts, however, they tackled their task. Bernie Carolan, as editor-in-chief, and C-ene Hamilton, as business manager, worked selflessly and tirelessly to complete the book on time. Bill Kenney, Joe lngrao and John McKeon, who supervised the other staffs, likewise deserve credit. In general outline the CALENDAR follows the pattern of its predeces- sors. We have confined the pictures of servicemen, however, to members of the Class of i945 who are already in service, because the number of alumni returns would become so large in time that it would require a bigger book than we could produce. Despite the obstacles, we have completed the book and we submit it for your approval, acknowledging its limitations but admitting that we did our best. 132
