eaffwza szmaafz Mmm ewan mem af '7fxe Elma! .s N the life of every Catholic High School there is abundant religious activity, arising from the very nature of the institution. As Pope Pius Xl pointed out in his encyclical on the Christian Education of Youth, the complete system of education must take in the whole aggregate of human life, physical and moral, intellectual and spiritual. At Cardinal Hayes High School it is the function of the Catholic Students Mission Cru- sade and the Knights of the Blessed Sacrament to take care of these needs. Together and separately they work to develop the spiritual side of every student's career. lt is the purpose of the C. S. M. C. to stimulate interest among the students in the many mission activities. That Father McKay has succeeded in this task is attested by the splendid cooperation Hayes men expressed during the year. ln lthe first semester by means of a weekly Mission Day over Sl800. was contributed. During Lent the tremen- dous goal of 352500. was set, and Hayes men topped it by donating almost 52800. to the missions of the Church. A splendid expression of Catholic Acitionl Throughout the school year the K. B. S. provides innumerable spiritual aids for the stu- dents. Under the guidance of Father Nugent, who is assisted by Fathers Mulroy and Sza- rama, the Knights sponsor the monthly holy hour on -the First Friday, Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament every Friday afternoon, Stations of the Cross during Lent and appropri- ate devotions to Our Lady during May. Mass is celebrated each morning in the chapel at 8:15 for the convenience of the students, and this year a new plan was put into effect whereby each class was assigned a day to assist the celebrant by reciting aloud those parts which are permitted at a Dialog Mass. On April 20 these two groups combined to present their second symposium at which they played host to representatives from thirty-two Catholic High Schools. The subject, The Rights and Responsibilities of Youth, was ably treated by Ann McKeown of St. Jean Baptiste, Andrew Kambisios of Power Memorial and James Mackin of Hayes, who were the formal speakers. A lively discussion from the floor followed in which most of the schools represented took part. Robert Nugent was the chairman -of the evening, and John Boyce conducted the open forum. Both of them acquitted themselves nobly, During the dancing which followed John Huneke introduced some local talent which delighted the audience. It was a definite success and is well on its way to becoming another of the Hayes traditions. 128
