CHEMISTRY CLUB URlNC the year the Chemistry Club had such a remarkable following that it was found necessary to divide the large group of embryonic chemists into three separate sections. This procedure placed the members in their respective fields of interest, namely, analysis, electricity and chemistry, and the chemistry behind photography. Through experimentation and the per- fection of pet projects, the members satisfied their desire to supplement school work. ln the course of the year some exceptional work was done by the stu- dents. Joseph Fusco and Louis Caporale, both of 4A, were prominent in the preparation of synthetic rubber and the coagulation of latex. A very fine demonstration in fire prevention was given by l-larcourt l-larris in conjunction with Louis Scaduto and Guido Pace. ln electro-chemistry Robert Parker and Martin Sorensen produced white lead and did some laudible electro-plating. Under the guidance of Brother Mahoney, Matthew Pastell and John Mallick produced some fine work in photo-chemistry. Analytical chemistry was ex- plored by Guido Marino. Father Green, the club's moderator, was very pleased with the successful season and looks forward to even greater interest in chemistry next year. Wizards of 1 M' the Science.

4 CAMERA CLUB MANY a raptured smile and earnest face was to be found among the mem,- bers of the Camera Club as Brother Evangelus praised and preached. The shutter-fans were provided with the fundamentals of photography, and the more advanced of the group were 'instructed in preparing matter for the school publication and taught the fine art of exhibiting their work. Weekly lectures were given by the moderator and members, at which valuable knowledge was exchanged. The Beginners' group and the Advanced Group met separately during the first semesterg in the second half of the year the two sections were combined and competitive exhibitions were held. This club does a fine job in preparing students for the photography staffs of the CHALLENGER and the CALENDAR. Frank Morris prize picture Stagecoach.' 1

THE CHALLENGER EPTEMBER, i944 saw the CHALLENGER emerge from its summer slumber and once more assume a prominent role on the Hayes scene. Living up to the standards of previ- ous years promised to prove difficult, but under the guidance of an able and experienced staff, headed by Bert Marino and John McKeon, the machinery of our school paper soon be- gan to function in 'high gear. A definite improvement was shown in the make-up of pages l and 2, The hand of Editor Marino could be seen in the adoption of a clearer, more readable type and the eye- catching, introductory phrases which contained a condensed summation of the various articles. Editor McKeon, .the popular artist, took over the sports page and surpassed his work of former years. The most marked development, however, centered about the Photography Department. Ernest Pascucci and Frank Bonanno have blossomed forth as virtuosos of the shutter. The clear-cut, detailed photographs of Hayes curricular and extra-curricular activities, which have filled the i944-45 issues of the CHALLENGER, are due to the untiring efforts of this duo, augmented by the work of Joe Criscione of Senior year, Feature Editor Efron Gonzales, has also exhibited an embryo talent which will well bear watching. The Rever- end Stanislaus Jablonski is devoting his time and his talent to the CHALLENGER this year, handling the circulation. With the assistance of the Reverend Joseph A. Dunn, moderator, the staff has been privileged to set up during the past year the Cardinal Hayes Chapter of -the Quill and Scroll Society. Another milestone was reached when membership in the Catholic School Press Association was secured. At present the results of the Columbia Scholastic Press Contest are being awaited eagerly by the members of the staff, who hope to attain the same su- perior rating that has been awarded the CHALLENGER in the past. 126
