ii EDDIE ZS years hui. . . we can now look back and reflect on all the events that have taken place in this school community, all the games, shows, practices, publications, report cards, and graduations. This unique chance enables us to become aware of a very important fact-these happenings didn't take place only in a twenty-five-year-old building, but rather through all the people who have passed through its halls and doors. We are the ones who make each year special, as each of us becomes an individual through our various actions and experiences. There is a common bond between the class of '81 and class of '59, however, and every other one in between. The first graduates can be compared to pioneers in that they originated a variety of traditions that still exist today. We, the latest in this chain, are going out on our own, breaking new ground through opportunity, and making a claim on the future-our future. S

In 1955 the Archdiocese of Philadelphia purchased part of an estate on which would be built the largest Catholic high school in the world. The land at 2nd Street near God- frey was the Fisher Estate, empty since the mansion which stood on it burned down in 1940. After L I the site was blessed by Bishop McCor- mack, construction was begun. The school that was eventually built was named for Dennis Cardinal Dougherty who headed the Archdiocese from 1918 until hisdeath in 1951. Opening in ' V September, 1956 wlth a W freshmen and sophomore student body of 2500, it awarded diplomas to its first graduating class in 1959. I Appropriately the school motto is IN THE SIGN OF THE CROSS YOLI WILL CON- QLIER, which was alsolthe motto of Dennis Cardinal Dougherty.
