CLASS Ill TORY The year 1945 was an eventful one 1n the l1ves of eleven l1ttle angels who en tered school for the flrst t1me w1th great ant1c1pat1on Future events were to prove the1r eagerness was Just1f1ed Among the members of the f1rst grade after twelve years there are s1x who are f1n1sh1ng together They are V1rg1n1a Stevens Beverly Waetzlg Allen Plper Carol Oberle Pat Weaver and Mary Lee Irv1n Mary Sue Wy1l1e Jomed us m Apr11 of that year Mrs Dawson was the fortunate teacher In the second year we suffered a few m1nor allments such as append1c1t1s broken arms and other m1sfortunes Mrs Dawson was our teacher th1s year also The th1rd grade was a very engoyable year We ate 1ce cream bars for perfect spellmg papers and we met another teacher Her name was M1ss Ph1111ps Dur1ng the fourth grade we contmued to eat 1ce cream bars Certam Jobs were ass1gned such as ra1s1ng wmdows Allen P1per was chosen for th1s It was the begmmng of the phenomenal physlcal prowess he possesses In the f1fth grade Alta Jean Watsonjomed us Mr Irv1n Stern was our teacher Jumor cho1r leader and protector We took part 1n the Chr1stmas Pageant Th1s was presented on the nlght Lawrence Murphy s house caught on f1re The s1xth grade was the year 1n whlchwe took our tr1p to Topeka We made a tour of the c1ty and attempted to cl1mb to the dome of the State House There were several that d1dn t make lt Mr Blshop was our teacher that year The seventh grade was the flrst year we were allowed to plck cheerleaders They were Mary Lee L1ncoln and Beverly Waetzlg Mr Bxshop was our teacher thls year also The eighth grade ah whatayear was that Th1s was the year when we dated the Semor boys Th1S was also the year when we took our sneak tr1p to Kansas C1ty and Paulme Alcorn were new students th1s year M1ss Blandm was our teacher Oh those good old days' Next year was h1gh school As freshmen we especlally remember in1t1at1on and the 1nc1dent when Carolyn Br1tton fell into the molasses We lost Pauline Alcorn but we ga1ned Conn1e Bayless Carol Smlth Donna Greene and Francis Sm1th Mr Uhrlaub was our sponsor The sophomore year we served the Jumor Senior Banquet and we made a good proflt on our Chr1stmas card sales Mrs McC1ymond was our sponsor Bxg events 1n our Junlor year were our Jumor Play The Famxly Wash and 1n1t1at1ng the freshmen But b1ggest of allwas the Jumor Senlor Prom and Banquet We had some fun decoratmg for th1s especlally when the whole ce1l1ng caved 1n the day of the b1g event Mrs Carter and Mrs McC1ymond were our sponsors Rlchard Schm1tz was a new student The senlor year f1nds that our class numbers all of ten w1th the loss of Mary Lee L1ncoln Irv1n at the end of the f1rst s1x weeks The f1rst event th1s year was the carmval We had the K1ng and Queen Booth and the F1sh Pond Our w1nn1ng cand1dates were Merle and Conn1e Bayless Other events 1n 56 were the Halloween Dance and Chr1stmas Party 1957 opened w1th an avalanche of tests of var1ous kmds We surv1ved to enjoy the events whlch followed The sen1ors served a Chlcken Dmner to the commun1ty 1n February The sprmg class party was held the Fr1day after St Patrlck s Day Our Semor play was presented Apr11 12 May 3 the sen1ors were honored guests at the Junlor Semor Banquet and Prom The trad1t1ona1 Baccalaureate servlces were held Sunday May 19 On May 22 the semors read the1r h1story wxll and prophecy and presented a skxt for Class N1ght Commence ment the mght to wluch we all looked forward was May 24 thus endmg our glorlous days at dear old Carbondale H1gh. .U 1 ' ' . 2 ' , . 1 . .
