Across our nation, Varsity Football is considered the sport in terms of popularity. At Capuchino this mood may have slacked in recent years. Cap has not produced a win- ning season since 1980 and an out- right championship since 1966. However, things are looking up for the Mustangs. With the transition of Al Steenvorde to Head Coach, the varsity team has gained some char- acter. Although the Varsity team of 1983 may not have won any games, they did win the respect of their coaches. The Mustangs suffered through an 0-9-1 season in 1983. Throughout the season the team never quit and the players held a never say die attitude right up to the final gun of the Mills game. Despite a dismal re- cord, there were several bright spots on the squad-1st team all- league, John Beals, led the C.C.S. in receptions while 1st team all league defensive back, Steve Ju- vera, led the county in intercep- tions. The team's finest hour came against P.A.L. champions Hillsdale, who the Mustangs battled in a hard fought 14-14 tie. The Tangs also played well when their offense cranked-up forty points against San Mateo in a losing effort. The squad's other leaders were 2nd team all-league Tony Tafuna. Ta- funa, the team's workhorse, played fullback on offense and middle line- backer on defense. Gualbert Yeo, Dino Tsortanidis and Tom Smurth- waite were all named to the Honor- able Mention list. Others who ex- celled on the squad were wide re- ceivers Darren Brown and Andre Bossett, John Killgariff and Dan Neilson, along with defensive play- ers Matt Coates, Chris 0'SuIIivan and Jarvis Mahe. A fine season is predicted for next year because of outstanding juniors Aram Kaloustian, Tim McGar- vey, Rod Ruiz, and Steve Astesano along with Yeo and Mahe. These players are expected to excel next year. Coach Steenvorde was assisted this season by offensive coordinator Pete Haramis. Haramis's play call- ing helped keep the Mustangs in many of their games. The squad was also assisted by coaches Bob Bailey and Bob Cunningham. To the coaches the season was not a total loss. Soon after a 7-6 loss to Mills in the mud, Coach Steenvorde stated the kids never quit as the scores all indicated, they were al- ways tough competitors. Coach Steenvorde and his staff are looking eagerly toward the '84 season. lt was a learning experience for the coaches, and he added, Wait till next year!
