FOOTBALL Capuchinds Varsity Mustangs, under last year's Coach of the Year, Paul Baldwin, proved again that Cap was still one of the top football teams in the Peninsula Athletic League. The Mustanes had eight lettermen return for action, leading this group were Babe Medrano, an All-North tackleg Jatk McCullough, a quick thinking, hard running backg and Roger Solem, hero of last year's historic foot- ball tilt against Burlingame. The Green and Gold took the third place berth mainly because they tangled with every top team of the P.A.L. Their 5-2-1 record is evidence of this fact. Coach Baldwin's Mustangs started out quickly, blank- ing South San Francisco for the second straight year, and then went on to win over Sequoia and jefferson. Their next four games were all against top teamsg and this proved to be too much for the injury-riddled Mustang, if he cared about staying on top of the P.A.L. Injuries were the prime factor in stopping Cap from taking the title. Main injuries came to Babe Medrano, Monty Baker, and Mark Edwardsg and all three were out for half the season. Caps victory over the San Mateo Bearcats was certainly their best game of the season. The combination of the Mustangs' compelling desire to win, and the spirited support the Student Body gave, spell out defeat for the previously unbeaten Bearcat Eleven. Sports writers claimed that it was the best defensive game of the year Varsity Gridders, seated top to bottom, are: First rowg Dau Rutherford, Bill Hemel, Phil XY'cig.1nd, Bob Keifer, jerry Stein way, Ron Swan, Gary Oldtnburg. VARSITY BASKETBALL Capls Varsity Basketballers captured the first P.A.L, Championship in the 'story ot' Mustang athletics, highlighting an outstanding season. The de- ciding game was held in the Stanford Gym and the Mustangs emerged victorious in a 42-37 thriller. The Cagers won many honors during the 1954-55 season, both individually and as a team . . . the pre-season Hayward Invitational Tour- nament, the N.P.A.L. and P.A.L. crowns, and the Consolation Champion- ship of the Tournament of Champions. jerry Bachich was chosen Player of the Year in the N.P.A.L., All Tournament in the Hayward Invitational and the Tournament of Champions, and led the N.P.A.L. in scoring. Capuchino once more had an outstanding thirties basketball season as this year's team tied for first in the north P.A.L. However the Mus- tangs quest for a third straight north-P.A.L, crown was thwarted by the Burlingame Panthers in a special play-oft game, 4 Coach jack Keogh's boys got off to a poor start but won eight in a - row near the end of the season to gain the first place deadlock, This was reminiscent of last years team which won nine in a row to take the northern division flag. Led by guards Tom O'Rourke and Paul Fischer, the inexperienced 20's played admirably all season with their best efforts coming out against Half Moon Bay, both times. Under the leadership of their new coach, Jack Keogh, Capuchino's D Division basketball squad proved to be one of the top NPAL teams this season with freshman Bob Blum spearheading the attack. After downing their first eight opponents the 10's cooled off considerably and therefore had to settle for third place. Sports writers acclaimed Blum as the best D Divi- sion player in the League with his 13-point game average to prove it. Fine play also came from forwards Jack Balletto and Billie Baker, and guards Nick U'Ren and Ron Miller. U'Ren took second team NPAL honors for his efforts. 110's First row, seated, left to right: E, Bister, N. U'Ren, B. Blum, J. Balletto, B. Baker, R. Miller, D. Romero, and Jack Keogh.
