English Develops Language Skills A good background in grammar was one of the greatest advantages offered to Captain Shreve students. Reading I and li and English I. II. III. and IV taught students basics such as sentence structure, composition, spelling, and vocabulary. Many students taking English courses learned how to write a research paper which will help them in their academic futures. These courses were beneficial to students who planned to go to college or to go straight into the business world. Their improved ability to express themselves to others will be profit- able to them regardless of their future plans. ( 26 LOG

C.S. English Courses Stress Literature Throughout this school year English involved not only grammar, hut also literature and cre- ativity. Shreve students did quite a bit of read- ing this past year. The Freshmen read Romeo and Juliet, and the Sophomores read Julius Cae- sar. Juniors who took Team Class read just about everything from The Scarlet Letter to The Great Gatsby. and the Seniors read books rang- ing from Lord of the Flies to Ivanhoe. In addition to taking a regular English course, students could also have chosen journalism, creative writing, speech, drama, humanities or novels classes. During the school year reading was one of the best methods of learning that could be found. It increased interpretation abilities and. most importantly, it broadened the students' vocabu- laries. 1.
