In addition to taking a regular English course, in which grammar and literature were taught, students could also have chosen journalism, creative writing, speech, drama, humanities, or novels classes. These classes helped students to become better writ¬ ers and to express themselves more clearly. Literature was defined by one teacher as the “FBI”: the Facts of life, the Beauty of life, and the Interpretation of life. English might have appeared as a boring task but, throughout the years, students realize how beneficial it really was.

English Can Be Work All students at Captain Shreve took a foreign language better known as English. Freshmen and sophomores took English I and English II in which they expanded their grammar skills and vocabulary. They also studied various styles of short stories, novels, and poetry. English III dealt primarily with American literature dating before the American Revolution through the present day. Seniors could take English IV in which they learned about literature from Eng¬ land. English was one of the most vital subjects taught at Captain Shreve.
