ALL-STAT On February 3. 4. and 5. Captain Jack was host to the P. M. E. A. All- State Orchestra. the biggest event of its kind ever to be staged in Central Penn- sylvania. One hundred and fifty high school students from all corners of Pennsylvania were participants in this memorable event. These boys and girls were enter- tained with a dance on Friday. music was supplied by the Melody Men from State College. Saturday afternoon mov- ies. courtesy of Shapiro Theatre. were attended by the group and on Saturday night. a banquet was held in the high school cafeteria. The students have worked many months in order to prepare for this event. To participate in the All-State festival. it was necessary for them to be in the upper third of their District Orchestra. then. only one can be taken from any school. This accounts for the high qual- ity in this final orchestra. The orchestra was under the direction U 1235? 1 .4 ? E ORCHESTRA of Dr. Joseph Maddy. of the University of Michigan. founder and president of the National Music Camp at lnterlocken. Michigan. Through the years he has ser- ved as conductor of All-State and re- gional school bands, orchestras. and cho- ruses in forty states. lt was indeed a priv- ilege to be able to have as our guest. such an interesting person as Doctor Maddy. Arrangements for the three-day event had been made by Mr. J. Richard Burk- holder. Mr. Gerald Scrivens. and Miss Marjorie Bange. The Student Council. with Mrs. Margaret Mason as adviser. had charge of enlisting the homes in the community where the young people were entertained overnight and served break- fast. The Mount Union Lions Club pro- vided the dance band for the dance on Friday night. This momentous event came to a cli- max with a grand concert. in the high school auditorium. on Saturday.
