Richard Burkholder, the com- petant director of our band, won't mind, I am sure, being referred to as the near- est thing to a perfectionist around Cap- tain Jack. His capability is brought out in the excellent group of musicians he has brought forth this year from our band. If one would enter into the gym dur- ing a home basketball game or on the athletic field during a football game, one of the first sounds to reach his ear would be that of the C. J. Band. The group has kept spirits high and music flowing at all these events. Seventy eight To add another of the many activities to the list, the band has provided music for many school assembly programs. At Christmas it lent its beauty to the annual Candlelight Service. On April 3, for the benefit of the American Cancer Society, the band presented an excellent concert which was open to the public. We can see from this that our band is a chari- table organization as well as musical. Mr. Burkholder, along with the band, chorus, and student body, played host to the All-State Orchestra this year. Our school had the honor of sending two rep- resentatives to this festival. They were John Montgomery, who plays cornet and OL BAND lst Row. left to right: Mr. J. The band also sent a number of boys and girls to County Band which was held in Alexandria in May. The Jazz Band has been reorganized this year and Mr. Burkholder also has formed a number of outstanding small groups such as the cornet trio, the saxo- phone sextet and the clarinet quartet. These groups will be functioning more frequently next year. I am sure the stu- dents of Captain Jack are looking for- ward to hearing from them. To wind up the many contributions of our fine band. they donated their ser- vices to the seniors at the commence- ment program, giving them a fine send- off. Thanks from all the student body to Mr. J. Richard Burkholder for giving his efforts in making our school's band such an outstanding one. All- State Orchestra. the biggest event of its kind ever to be staged in Central Penn- sylvania. One hundred and fifty high school students from all corners of Pennsylvania were participants in this memorable event. These boys and girls were enter- tained with a dance on Friday. music was supplied by the Melody Men from State College. Saturday afternoon mov- ies. courtesy of Shapiro Theatre. were attended by the group and on Saturday night. a banquet was held in the high school cafeteria. The students have worked many months in order to prepare for this event. To participate in the All-State festival. it was necessary for them to be in the upper third of their District Orchestra. then. only one can be taken from any school. This accounts for the high qual- ity in this final orchestra. The orchestra was under the direction U 1235? 1 .4 ?
