Hans Roth Becomes Caprockis Hans Roih, foreign exchange sfudeni. makes The Longhorn sign af The Burges Musiang pep rally. He gave a speech in which he expressed his graiiiude for being inviied +0 Caprock. First Foreign Exchange Student Hans Roth. Caproclc's first foreign exchange student, lived with the John Boyett family. After flying from Germany to New Yorlc, Hans traveled to Amarillo by bus. He arrived in August and was met by the Boyetts and their three children, Leta, Rita, and Mike. The American Field Service was the organization that arranged for Hans to come to the United States. AFS cooperates with all non-com- munist nations. The organization gives exchange students an opportunity to learn about the customs, ideals, and school systems of another country. Hans's main interests were music. photography, and art. At Caprock, his curriculum included physics, trig- onometry, American history, govern- ment, English, and orchestra. Hans plays the violin during orchestra rehearsal. He also played several other instruments. Mr. and Mrs. John Boyett conduct a tour of Caproclc on the day of Hans's arrival. In September, girls trom all tour schools worked in the dunking booth sponsored by the Downtown Lions Club at the Tri-State Fair. During the tootball season. the Caprock and Palo Duro bands marched together at halttime in Dick Bivins Stadium. The Caproclc and Tascosa choirs combined to present Christmas con- certs at both schools betore the Christmas holidays. Students who arrived late were greeted with a warm, friendly smile and a tardy pass. Mrs. Cross. attendance clerk. su- pervised the collection of attendance cards and the recording of absences. She posted the reinstatement list daily and sent a similar list to each teacher. Mrs. Connell, school secretary, performed regular secretarial duties. She also had the responsibility of carrying school money to the bank each day. Mrs. Vineyard, typing assistant, did extra typing and assisted the other personnel. She answered the phone many times daily. Mrs. Sims, RN., cared for injured and ill students and made a yearly health check of students. Mrs. Cox, new to the Caproclc faculty. was school librarian. She maintained an orderly and quiet li- brary for the students and faculty. Mrs. Wanda Cross. The applied electives included choir, band, orchestra, theory, auto- mechanics, woodworking, pre-engin- eering, mechanical drawing, and driver's training. Bible students learned the history ot the Bible. They were taught the basics ot the Hebrew and Greek languages. Approximately twenty students were en- rolled in the Bible class.
