En!5.5555-QAPODANNO' is one of the Knox Class' Fiigates and is equippedtwithqfbow and stern gwpoafanno fha Qyhzfa Since the breaking of her commissioning pennant on 17 November 1973, USS CAPODANNO has continued to bring new honor to the proud name of her exemplar. USS CAPODANNO deployed to the Mediterranean Sea, in April 1975. During this time, CAPODANNO conducted search and rescue missions on four separate occasions, resulting in the saving of 22 lives. In the summer of 1976, CAPODANNOconducted Bicentennial operations on the West Coast of Africa and contimued on to an extended tour of duty with Commander, Middle East Forces in the Red Sea, Arabian Gulf and Indian Ocean. While on this deployment, the ship was awarded the Commander in Chief, U, S, Atlantic Fleet Golden Anchor for the best personnel retention rate in 1976. CAPODANNO Was .runner-up for this award in 1977. In July 1977, CAPODANNO deployed t0 South America. AS a member of UNITAS XVIII Task Force, CAPODANNO operated with many South American navies and served as an ambassador of good will to our allies to the south. Upon completion of the UNITAS deployment, CAPODANNO shifted homeport to Bath, Maine where she underwent ex- tensive overhaul and modernization at Bath- Iron Worksfrom-january to December 1978. -In early 1979 while undergoing refresher training at- Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, CAPODANNO achieved an .overall .score-of 92 percent in competitive exercises, a record high for that year. In September 1979, CAPODANNO deployed again to the Mediterranean1Sea. As an avid swimmer and great sports enthusiast, this native Staten Islander led the active life of an American boy, After his 1947 graduation from Curtis High School, he began a rigorous cur- riculum in preparation for the priesthood. Following a year's study at Fordham University, Vincent Capodanno attended Maryknoll Seminaries in Massachusetts and New York receiving the degrees of Bachelor of Sacred Theology and Master of Religious Education. Then on June 7, 1957, he was ordained by the late Cardinal Spellman and shortly after, fervently devoted eight years of Catholic Missionary service to the needy people of Taiwan and Hong Kong. Volunteering his services as a Navy Chaplain on December 28, 1965, ,Father Capodanno received his commission as a Lieutenant in the Chaplain Corps of the United States' Naval Reserve. ' After completing orientation at the Navy Chaplain's School, Newport, Rhode Island, Lieutenant Capodanno requested duty with the Marines in Vietnam. Joining the First Marine Division in 11966, Father Capodanno immediately began making his presence in thelcombat .operations of Chu Lai, a Zregular part of his duties as Battalion Chaplain.
