fhhdthood Foreword Between the pleasant years of child- hood and the responsible world of adults is a chasm known as adolescence which must be crossed by all. None can escape it. Far from being simple to cross, it is a region filled with thousands of problems and unanswered questions. To successfully reach the other side, a mature and respect- ed citizen, the teenager must have parental love, firm discipline, and superior educa- tional guidance. Capitol Hill High School is designed to help teens across the chasm. It may be com- pared to a bridge, with each span repre- senting an avenue of growth-in knowl- edge, recognition, physical fitness, and friendship. Each student is guided by able teach- ers as he travels across the bridge. Guid- ance, however, does not mean regimenta- tion or destruction of individuality. Each student spends his day in his own way- studying, working, playing. But all travel in the same direction-toward graduation and worthy membership in the community. By means of photography and phrase, the CHIEFTAIN now describes for you- C.H.H.S.-BRIDGING THE GAP TO ADULTHOOD. V I ln- A nennnnion Four dedicated teachers . . . a combined total of one hundred and twenty-four years of service to CHHS . . . producing outstanding citizens for two generations . . . teaching mathematics, English, art, and history . . . also teaching responsibility, self- expression, personal development, and good citizen- ship as by-products . . . Four teachers for life and of life . . . builders of intellect and molders of character . . . bridge- builders preparing the way for those to come . . . For their Work in helping adolescents to suc- cessfully bridge the gap to adulthood, We dedicate the 1960 CHIEFTAIN to Mrs. Alice Chesher, Mrs. Mabel Kincade, Miss Dorothy Mayes, and Miss Mary A. Selken. The Bridge BuHder An old man going alone highway Came at the evening, cold and gray, To a chasm vast and wide and steep, With waters rolling cold and deep. The old man crossed in the twilight dim, The sullen stream had no fears for him, But he turned when safe on the other side, And built a bridge to span the tide. Old man, said a fellow pilgrim near, You are wasting your strength with building here. Your journey will end with the ending day, You never again will pass this way. You've crossed the chasm, deep and wide, Why build you this bridge at eventide? The builder lifted his old gray head. Good friend, in the path I have come, he said, There followeth after me today A youth whose feet must pass this way. The chasm that was nought to me To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall beg He, too, must cross in the twilight dim- Good friend, I am building this bridge for him. Will Allen Dromgoole 5
