From reading, writing, and arithmetic to music, art, speech, commercial, and vocational training. What could better represent prog- ress than the advancements made in edu- , I cation during the fifty years of Oklahoma s statehood. y As students of Capitol Hill Highschool, we are proud to be a part of a celebration involving the dreams and plans of so many Oklahomans. - The 1957 Chieftain Yearbook presents life at CHHS, its traditions, ambitions, and hopes for the future, a reflection of the life you helped to make a success. l l l i l . l I l l l l I l l l r l ,I .1,: . f, '3.,, ,,,, ,,,, , Lf' -saififlg 35. .A r N ga ' P y Q., l fig' K 'LVN iii, ,Qin 3 a f-v wr 5, dgwk x 325' wig! CHESTER SWANSON, Superintendent Oklahoma City Public Schools Rounding out his last year as City Superintendent of Schools is Dr. J. Chester Swanson. He has resigned from the educators post which he has held since 1951 to take a position at the Uni- versity of California at Berkley, California. Previously, Dr. Swanson was school administrator in Panama Canal Zone and assistant superintendent in Allentown, Pennsly- vania and San Diego, California. His degrees include an AB from Richmond University, an MA and PhD from Duke University- and an LLD from Oklahoma City University. Dr. Swanson has become a familiar and loved figure in Oklahoma education circles and he will be missed by students and teachers alike. Working hand in hand with the citizens of Oklahoma City for better schools and education programs is the Board of Education, headed by Dr. J. Chester Swanson. This year the board has approved the addition of new classrooms and funds for expansion of some of the already out-dated schools to meet the ever-increasing demands of a growing metropolis. Page 8 MR c B. MCCRAY Mus. L. D. MELTON MR. JIM WRIGHT MR. PHIL BENNETT MPSON President Vice-President MR. OTTO THO Approaching the end of his first year at CHHS, Dr. Leonard Cox is proving to be the Greatest Hrs immediate popularity is credited to his ability to get along with young people as well as adults. Before coming to CHHS, Dr. Cox was a classroom teacher and principal at Commerce, Oklahoma for 15 years. More recently he was Director of Pupil Services at Central High School and Consultant for the State Department of Education. A familiar sight to all CHHS students is Mr. Alonzo Roop, vicesprincipal and all-out Redskin supporter. Mr. Roop is in charge of discipline and works with the counselors in helping students adiust themselves to their school program. He is also responsible for attendance problems and statisti- cal reports made to the State Department of Edu- cation, the Oklahoma City central office and the North Central Association. His helpful cooperative nature has made him a friend to students and teachers alike. Page 9 , 3' 1' I T. P552 is K H sew rf. . . MRS ADALINE BALL, M.A. L. H. BENGSTON, B.B.A. and M.S.
