May 27 1943 Dear Marsre How trme does fly' It seerrs luke only yesterday that we came to Caprtol Hr as green Freshres and here we are sophrstrcated Senrors ready to leave our dear Alma Mater Perhaps rn remrnrscrng we can recall a few of the many thmgs that made thus last year so much fun Of course we could never forget that school opened the 8th of September Golly' but rt was swell to get back mto the swmg of thxngs agam We Senrors dashed around knowrngly stumblmg over the dazed Freshres and responding to therr querres of Where to now' and What floor rt rs on? The fxrst week passed qurckly because we had two half days free for the Farr Whee Wasnt that Rocket thrrllmg M3lSlCy On the 17th of thus month Peggy Kelley Jean Gannon Mary Agnes Staab and Glorra Weaver were elected to lead the Pep Club for the year After numerous work outs the grrls were all set for our flrst game We yelled trll we were hoarse and the results were great for Srlver Lake They won 19 O Autumn was well under way when the second month of school arrrved at Caprtol Square Our frrst game of the month was our Homecorrrng game wrth Maur Hrll Orchrds to Vera Lee Turgeon who rergned wxth drgmty as Queen and also to her attendants Lucr Verschelden Margaret Annee Burke and Joyce Olsen The boys played a wonderful game comrng out on top wrth a score of 13 O Everyone shouted yoyfully as we paraded around town Our afternoon was com pleted wrth a varsrty at Holy Name gym Our theme song was Why Don t We Do Thrs More Often? The next three games came rn qurck successron wrth two vrctorres and one defeat Scores Caprtol I3 Leccmpton 0 Caprtol 25 Burlmgame 6 Caprtol 7-Osage I5 Our first Sodalnty Conventron was held at Leavenworth on October 17th A wonderful time was had by all and a great sprrrt was shown Everyone wants to do more For God and For Country Somethrng new and different occurred rn Topeka on October 27th Remember Navy Day and how proud we were of Lucr Verschelden as Queen and the Olsen twrns as her attendants? All worked hard to sell War Bonds and Stancpe and as a result the Semors mented a free day for sellrng the most Remember how we spent our free day? Of course we had a prcnrc at Horseshoe Clrff We all had a gay old trme even though Father Burak went wadrng rn the creek wrth hrs shoes on And remember dear how sad we were when Hrghland beat us I8 7 Spooks goblrns and all sorts of characters were present at the Halloween dance Freshres turned our 100172 It was evrdent that November had arrrved when the frrst cold days appeared and heavy coats were welcome And oh dear how hard we worked on the frrst paper It frnally came out a glorrous success on the 3rd of November We travelled to Wamego on the 4th for a very thrlllrng game They won I2 7 Remember how the Pep Club cheered on blankets and under umbrellas7W Horrors' The frrst report cards came out the 10th Quote Why drdnt I study so I could have gotten an A Instead of a measly C9 Unquote We were glad to see Armnstrce come the llth That meant a half day free to watch the Parade HA' HA' How we wrsh we could forget about that game wrth Seaman But to show that we re good sports we were trampled' 59 0 Darlrng remember how excrtecl we were the mght of the Soldlers Dance? age Forty semen fl After much preparation the Christmas Play The Little Shepherd was presented the 16th Three cheers to Sister Patrick who directed it to success Oh joy' Oh Estasy' Our vacation began the 18th Maisie On Sunday the 20th Mrs Simpson and the chorus gave the annual Srlver Tea Beautiful music filled the air to greet the friends and parents who attended MERRY CHRISTMAS' In spite of gas rationing Santa visited all Our ratloned vacation ended the 28th That evening we beat the Alumni in an exciting game 57 33 Oh Happy New Years Day' How we welcomed that free day to sleep off our Hilarious New Years Eve We don t suppose you remember it Maisie but we had a perfectly wonderful time A victory for C C We won from Valley Falls 47 16 on the 8th But then 1n quick succession we lost to Osage Highland Hunt and Seaman So all in all our n'orale was very low Everyone was in a dither over exams the llth and 12 After struggling for two days the mayority came out with beaming faces Why all the silence? Oh yes our retreat was held the 13th 14th and 15th Our instructor Father Shot impressed everyone with his inspiring discourses The retreat was a great success and many wonderful vocations resulted We met Osage the 15th but were fairly beaten 62 16 Incidentally do you remember the slumber party afterwards Ellen? On the 22nd we had a very exciting game with Highland We cheered like everything but nevertheless we lost 39 34 The Seniors had the opportumty of attending College Day at Topeka High School the 29th It was very interesting and enlightening The boys had quite a day and the girls really tire around looking for the sand dunes Didn t we Maisie? Anyone who wants to know where they are yust ask Patty Holst and she will have a very quaint answer for you That evening we encountered Seaman and were beaten 49 10 No one could possible forget the party afterwards February seerred to be an unlucky month for our Basketball team We lost to Wamego Valley Falls Osage and Highland Roses are red Violets are blue Sugar is sweet And so are you Wont you be my Valentine' Ioriginal aren t we'7J On the 16th Lieutenant J C Thomas Stevens visited the school He was a former graduate whom we are very proud The 19th was a very eventful day at C C We were honored by having Father Coyle chaplain he acquired about 400 admirers and friends Another very interesting speech was given the 75th by Vincent Verschelden who was present at the bombing of Pearl Harbor He told us many instructive facts about December 7th and also about his trips to and from the island All we students were very proud to read in the paper that a former graduate Sergeant Steve Sur baugh was cited for bravery The last dance before Lent was given by the Mothers Club in the Mclnerny hall the 9th The Seniors and juniors all appeared in slacks We all had a fine time and you can say that again Lent began the 10th There was an increase in Commumons and attendance at Mass Oh how inviting that candy counter looked at noon Darn those resolutions The Regional Tournament was held at Osage this year C C met Burlington and was eliminated by a score of 73 97 Lorain Muller represented the school in the Preliminary Apologetics Contest at Leavenworth the 17th He wrote a wonderful speech entitled Positive Clues to the True Faith The starrp contest ended the 15th Congratulations to the Sophomores who won and to their Queen Mary Louise Artzer The Seniors ran a close second The Federation of Womans Club Contest was held again this year As usual all Mrs Simpsons students came out with flying colors The members of the play cast went around the 16th with shaking knees and scared expressions as the St Patritks Play approached The whole school was given a free day in honor of St Patricks Day The plav Down and Up given that evening was a wonderful success A reactionary audience of 7 000 people thoroughly enloyed this highly entertaining comedy After receiving all congratulations the play cast and staff held a party at the K of C hall Everyone had a gay old time' When did food taste ro good7 f QS.
