Dean of Theological Seminary, Professor of Systematic Theology Across College Avenue from the main campus stands Divinity Hall. There, young men from all over the country study and live to prepare themselves for the ministry. Capital Seminary supplies pastors to over half of the vacant pulpits in the American Lutheran Church. When enrollments are high and space is limited, the faculty doesn’t despair. Their friends of the Church and the school build more accommodations for their all-important work. The classroom wing of the original plans for Divinity Hall is nearing completion, and will be dedicated next fall. Offices for pro- fessors, visual aids rooms, and recreation rooms along with the badly needed class- rooms will then be ready for occupancy. G. II. DOERMANN Professor of Christian Education JOHN O. [77] ■■ Well on its way to becoming a recognized touring group of the Campus, the Seminary Chorus under the directorship of Donald Good has this year for the first time in many years undertaken engagements outside the immediate vicinity of Columbus. Among these were concerts at Obetz, Portsmouth, Fremont, Toledo and Detroit, Michigan. Local engagements included the Nurse’s Home, the Penitentiary, and the Art Gallery. On May 4, the Chorus held their home- service at Christ Church, and this year, an- other first, the Seminary’s own Chorus will sing at their commencement. Officers: Bill Deutschmann, manager; Bob Kelly, president; Emile Ibele, historian; Ron Wolter, librarian; and Lloyd Linder, accom- panist. S eminarif orud Each day of the week, during the college chapel period, the seminarians and faculty worship together in Divinity Hall Chapel. On one of these days a seminary professor has the meditation; another day, a student; on a third day the entire time is devoted to matins and other liturgy; the remaining periods are de- cided upon by whoever is in charge. The seminary chapel is a combination of laboratory for the student and spiritual com- munion for students and faculty of the seminary. [79] Seminaru JJ-omecomincj Under the sceptre of Queen Rhododendron, on November 2 around eleven o’clock in the evening, the Homecoming festivities migrated across College Avenue, where the Queen was officially crowned. Mr. Bill Range, president of the Seminary Association, did the honors with all the pomp and pageantry belonging to the occasion. With magical music by the quartette and the essence of cigar incense wafting on the breeze, court slaves bowed to their queen who was still veiled as is the tradition of monarchs. The unveiling and ascension of the queen, Ron Wolter, climaxed the evening. [SO] On December 5 and 6 the annual Mein Memorial Lectures were presented. This year the speaker was Dr. II. Richard Niebuhr, Professor of Ethics, Yale Divinity School. Dr. Niebuhr presented a series of lectures on the subject, “Christian Interpretation of History.” These lectures, held each year, are pre- sented at Capital and Wartburg in memory of C. C. Hein. Dr. Ilein was a renowned Lutheran leader and was president of the Joint Synod of Ohio before the merger in 1930, and continued as president of the Amer- ican Lutheran Church until 1937. [31] Iroun DH is home to many men for three years, more or less. They relax here, and they study here. Mostly they LIVE here. Part of their life is reading and studying the Bible. . . . .....and time comes when some menial tasks must be done, such as washing . . . . . . and then more fun, ping pong or conversation will do . . . . ... before it’s time to study for the next day. [83] [S4] (Lampas CLounci A group of twenty active members called Campus Council form one of the most in- fluential student groups on campus. The mem- members are elected representatives from the classes, and also the class presidents. As the Campus Council increases its ex- perience, ability, and efforts, it is entrusted with increased responsibility and importance on campus. Its duties, specifically, are to plan, coordinate, and administer all-campus programs in the areas of student life, recrea- tion, and activities. This includes supervis- ing campus elections and drives; participating in the formulation and upholding of campus rules, regulations, traditions, and standards of Christian conduct; and supervising special functions such as Homecoming and May Day. It functions as a means of mutual consultation between administration, faculty, and student body, acting in such disciplinary cases as are referred to it or otherwise come within its jurisdiction. Through its representatives, it also serves in an advisory capacity and participates in the functions of the autonomous boards and com- mittees. Officers: Robert Lynn, president; Thomas Williams, vice-president; Doris Reinke, secre- tary; Pat Schaefer, treasurer. [86] When a student pays for his activities ticket, he seldom realizes all the people con- cerned with the listings, the prices, and the dates. Besides obtaining admission to sports events, the activities ticket subscribes to the Chimes, the Concert-Lecture Series and many other activities. The BCA or Board of College Activities plans the activities budget, approves dates, and handles funds and awards of the BCA organizations. Prof. Arthur Grossman is chair- man of BCA. Other Faculty Representatives are Proffessors Ileinke and Brockman, and Dr. Fred Bernlohr. The student members are three elected from the student body at large and two appointed by Campus Council. These students are: Bill Schamadan, Tom Williams, Dale Falknor, A1 Hausmann, Pauline Hagen. ECJl [87] ncp National Collegiate Players, or Pi Epsilon Delta by Greek letters, is the newest organiza- tion on Capital’s campus. Thirteen active members received their charter to this na- tional honorary fraternity on November 4, 1951. NCP is still in its infant stage, but it has this year assisted in installations of new chapters and arranged for the initiation of new members of its own for next fall. National Collegiate Players provides the theatre-minded people on campus the oppor- tunity to become affiliated with a national or- ganization, and through this affiliation to stand as a college unit in national movements for the betterment of drama in the United States. Their local influence will be felt in the striving to raise the standards of college and university theatres by recognizing group and individual efforts in theatre arts. Officers: William Miller, president; Don Riggs, vice-president; Beth Bierstedt, secre- tary; Ralph Doermann, treasurer. [88] The Christmas season at Cap would be sorely lacking in spirit without the traditional tree-trimming, carol sing, and the culmination of the week’s events, the inspiring Christmas vesper service. These are sponsored by the Christian Student Fellowship, or CSF as it is known on campus. This group was organized in 1946 to unite the students of all faiths. All Christians, re- gardless of denomination, find a place in CSF. besides the Christmas events and the monthly meetings, CSF also sponsors weekly vespers, the campus Sunday School, and Re- ligious Emphasis Week. Through these media are promoted the spirit of Christian fellowship and the advancement of Christian living on campus. Officers: Glenn Wegmeycr, president; Patti Zeigler, secretary; Harold Uhl, treasurer; Virginia Reuthe, program chairman. -J appci iamu lyjpsilon Officers Kappa Sigma Upsilon, or more familiarly nown as KSU, is a non-secret, independent aternity open to all CU male students. The asis for their organization is, briefly, fellow- lip, scholarship, and service. In line with the last of these principles, this ear’s pledge candidates cleaned and planted field for recreation at the North Community ihurch. Further evidence of this recently re- italized group is noted in the addition of a ledge pin and a coat of arms. As with any fraternity, certain yearly tra- itions become established. There can be no rgument that initiation week, the winter rmal, and the football pep rallies sponsored y this organization have become a part of le Cap student’s life. Officers: Dick Sutter, president; Dick oth, vice-president; Dale Falknor, secretary; aul Stengel, treasurer. [91] fv Executive Council By the promotion of KST’s Big-Little Sister program, incoming freshmen have an oppor- tunity to learn about life at Cap and to feel at home when they arrive here. Among a host of activities offered by KST are the freshman mixer, fall fashion show, hen party, Sweet- heart Formal and the spring carnival. The women behind these undertakings are Kappa Sigma Thetas, and can be any women students on Cap's campus, for this social sorority was organized for all women students. Members of KST work for the promotion of ideals of Cap among women students in a four- fold social program of recreation, education, leadership and welfare. Officers: Carolyn Fudge, president; Gene- vieve Christensen, Dice-president; Marian Ben- kert, secretary; Ann Wiessinger, treasurer. [93] mimm Cap's only honorary scholastic fraternity is l-S Kappa Alpha Pi. The membership is ever changing, since eligibility for this honor is ex- tended to those students who have been on the honor roll the preceding semester. Although existing at present in name only, an annual dinner is held in the spring to give recognition to those who have been on the honor roll for seven semesters. Those students who join have no easy task to remain among the Kappa Alpha Pi’s. Officers: Robert Litle, president; Arlene Behnfeldt Goshia, secretary. [94] What would Christmas be without the carolling of DPA? This annual tradition has been a high point of the campus holiday season for years, and one to which everyone looks forward, not just the DPA members. The members are people who, beside meet- ing academic requirements, have completed an additional requirement in the study of Ger- man. The organization brings together those who wish to continue the study of the language and literature so that they can profit from the DPA programs. All of this has as its basis the purpose to promote an interest in and understanding of the cultures and language of the German people. Officers: Dick Heuerman, president; Paul Stengel, vice-president; Teckla Sund, secre- tary; Gene Sauer, treasurer. 5L Tau Pi Phi, the honorary business fratern- ity, does more than uphold the national pur- poses and aims. It is the sponsor of the Com- merce Club. Their support of the more in- clusive organization, plus Tan Pi Phi meet- ings and programs entails much work. The members of the fraternity are all students in the field of business administration and eco- nomics, and a high scholastic rating is also a prerequisite. Each May a banquet is held to which all who have been members are invited. At this time an award is presented to the junior who has attained the highest point average in business and other courses. Officers: Dick Poth, president; Carolyn Fudge, vice-president. [96] The purpose of this national honorary fra- ternity is to give recognition for outstanding ability in debate and public speaking. The State Tournaments for men and women are sponsored by the local chapter. New members of Tau Kappa Alpha are elected each March from students in the field who rank in the upper third of their classes and are in their second year of work in forensics. The Capital chapter was established in 1929 with six charter members, and now, including graduate members in the seminary and faculty, there are about fifteen TKAs on campus. Officers: Charles Adams, president; Bar- bara Edwards, secretary. [97] To Christian groups, Sunday is a day of worship. To add increased religious emphasis to this day, the Luther League of Cap meets on Sunday evenings. The league was formed through the efforts of American Lutheran stu- dents who wanted an organization connected with their church, through which they could carry on their religious activities. The Luther League is affiliated with the na- tional league, and adopts the aims of the Luther League at large: to promote Christian ideals, and to work, learn, play and worship with Christ in the center of all activities. They have added as their group aim to keep all pre- sents, parish workers, and those who will be dealing with the American Lutheran Church, in contact with the functions of the Luther league at large; and to bring the program to a college level. Officers: Jake Reinhardt, president; Sally Butts, vice-president; Virginia Reuthe, secre- tary; Charles Fox, treasurer. czCutlier X ea ue t JS-J Today, more than ever, we need to develop a conscious need of Christ in facing modern life and problems. These arc the principles embodied by Capital University’s Lutheran Student Association. Social gatherings of various types, Bible study and prayer groups, and panel discussions are designed to bring the Lutheran students of Capital to the realization of these ideals. Officers: Larry Kocha, president; Eileen Felger, vice-president; Bernice Purdon, secre- tary; Bob Brandenburg, treasurer. [99J Editor-in-Cliief Editors These are the people behind the book you are reading. They have come to know the names and faces of all Cap students by taking their pictures, and by writing about them and what they do. Business Manager [101] Editor imeS Before the Spectator was published, the Chimes was the literary publication at Capital. Now the Chimes has turned to fulfilling the functions of a newspaper. Editorial Staff Staying within the bounds of accepted jour- nalistic style, the Chimes presents to the cam- pus body news of importance, feature articles for enjoyment, and editorial views on campus issues. Being a newspaper the Chimes has tried to present news without applying sensa- tionalism or overshadowing the news with modernistic layouts. [102] It takes the constant work and efforts of the thirty-three staff members to serve the students of Capital in tin's field. Stair Editorial Staff: Dick Schwab, editor-in- chief; Sally Butts, news editor; Tom Wil- liams, feature editor; Fred Sommerfelt, sports editor; Merlin Knauff, copy editor; Bob Lieske, photography editor. Disbro, Rodney Josephson, Donald Shaw, Marline Spille, Hernice Purdon, John Garverick, Gerald Kol- berg, Ralph Doermann, Harold Schroeder, Harold Koehler, Paul Carmany, Harry IIol- zapfel. When the campus family grew and it was felt a straight newspaper was desirable, the Chimes completed its career as a voice of the budding author and poet, and the Spec- tator took over. It is now published once or twice each year. Along with original stories, poems and essays, the Spectator also prints music, paintings and sculpture. This makes it possible for almost every student to submit material. This year the students of Creative Writing and Advanced Composition, taught by George Dell, are the associate editors of the Spectator. Partly a class project and partly an extra- curricular activity, the Spectator has given the students material from which to learn, and has given the student body a magazine that is theirs. [104] Plii The influence of Phi Beta is felt on campus and in the community. Tin’s is the women’s national professional fraternity of music and dramatic arts, Phi Chapter. Chrysanthemums which they sell are seen throughout the sta- dium at the Homecoming game. Little purple and gold ribbons pinned on sweaters announce the new pledges each fall. In the community these women are known to provide good en- tertainment in speech and music. For the individual member, Phi Beta seeks advancement intellectually and socially. As a body Phi Beta promotes the best in music and drama and fosters college spirit and loyalty to our campus. High scholarship, performance and professional achievement are the overall aims of this professional organization. Officers: Roberta Treon, president; Ellen Xchncr, secretary; Beth Bierstedt, vice-presi- dent; Margaret Derry Caw, treasurer. A new addition to the group of honorary societies occurred with the installation of the Epsilon Phi chapter of Phi Mu Alpha in April, 1951. This honorary is open to men of the campus who have a deep interest in and an apprecia- tion of music. The society has a three-fold purpose: to advance the cause of music in America; to foster welfare and brotherhood of students of music; and to encourage loyalty to the alma mater. Though young in years, this chapter has al- ready established activities for the year. At their meetings held twice each month, speak- ers and lecturers well-known in the music circle are presented. Social activities also have a place on the calendar as do the formal pledging and initiation ceremonies. Officers: Edward Wolf, president; Robert Snyder, vice-president; David Harper, secre- tary; Paul Bockelman, treasurer. Pin Wlu -Atplia Future parish workers are an organized group. Through regular meetings they seek to acquaint the women preparing for this field with their future work. At the same time a closer fellowship is developed among the women. Their monthly programs usually consist of individual demonstrations, speakers, or dis- cussions—all about parish work. They prove of value to the future parish worker by the information which they present, and by the experience the women receive in the partici- pation. Their social life is not neglected, and the future parish workers look forward each year to the annual Christmas party, their major event. Officers: Lois Jean Ulrich, president; Bar- bara Edwards, vice-president; Mary Kettler, secretary; Betty Schott, treasurer. [1071 Many topics, from campus problems to in- ternational situations, are discussed and worked upon by this active group. Forums, panel discussions, settlement house work, co- operation with community welfare programs, and sponsorship of the Campus Chest are a few of the tilings accomplished in the efForts of this group to broaden the social welfare knowledge and interest among students. They are the mediary group between the faculty, students, and civic welfare agencies. For the thirty-five members there is much work to do and much work is done. The proj- ects of this group stimulate interest in the field, and provide a medium of experience for those students majoring in social welfare work. Officers: Genevieve Christensen, presi- dent; Bob Brandenburg, vice-president; How- ard Federspiel, treasurer; Mary Kettler, secre- tarij. [108] Organized by and of the science department back in 1919, the Leonard Science Club is not exclusively for the science student. The foun- dation of this organization has resulted in the bringing of speakers to our campus who talk on various phases of science. The programs are designed to interest the layman as well as the science student. Things of a scientific nature which are used every day are ex- plained, and science is made interesting. This purpose, to inform the student body of various phases of science, has been sought with lectures on glass and water, among others presented. Picnics and field trips are also a part of the calendar for this group who take advantage of finding out the why and how of things which surround the student. Officers: Garth Sengelaub, president; Bill Schamadan, vice-president; Arlene Behnfeklt Goshia, secretary; Paul Bernlohr, treasurer. cjCeonard e. —science cla Future teachers and teachers of future teachers have joined to form the Capital Edu- cation Association, or CEA. All future teachers, grade school, high school or college level, are welcomed into the group. They may hear such interesting speakers as the Rev. Charles Harrison, chaplain, or the state su- perintendent of schools speak on subjects of interest to all teachers. Discussions about teacher careers and shop talk in a social atmosphere are all benefits to these future leaders of our children. The professional interests of future teachers and a professional attitude among these stu- dents is of prime importance to this society. Officers: Don Shaw, president; Carolyn Schultz, vice-president; Irene Hueter, secre- tary; Virginia Iseringhausen, treasurer. The business administration and business education students have their own organiza- tion as do most of the other vocational fields on campus. The Commerce Club brings speakers to the campus who present to the students various topics in their area of in- terest. Although they sponsor no all-campus social event nor have any social calendar for their members, the people of the Commerce Club find social enjoyment in mutual interests. In the attempt to help further the interest and broaden the knowledge of students who are majors in business administration and educa- tion, this organization has a firm position among the organizations of Cap s campus. Officers: Gerald Vollbrecht, president; Eugene Sauer, vice-president; Ann Kassing, secretory; Jack Guthrie, treasurer. Clontmerce [in] Political Sc cience Though only a few years old, the Political Science Club promoted the biggest program this year. To put to work the machinery about which they learn, this group extended their program through Columbus and surrounding towns. On March 22 and 29, mock Republican and Democratic Conventions were held. Students from high schools all over central Ohio ar- rived at the Campus to promote the candi- date they wished to nominate. Basing all procedure on the national conventions, each school represented a state and was repre- sented according to that state’s delegates. Party platforms were adopted, state caucuses were held, resolutions were approved, and demonstrations and nominations for the presi- dency were presented. This was democracy at work. Officers: J. M. Bell, president; Clark Mac- Phail, vice-president; Gloria Bauer, secretary; Marian Woelke, treasurer. t edidi ence (Lounci Under the guidance of the Dean of Wo- men’s Office, representatives of the women in the dorms in 1947 drew up a constitution for the Residence Council. Students on campus see evidence of this group particularly on the five major holidays when special dinners are planned in the Refectory. Residence Council strives to further the fel- lowship and the spirit of unity of the women of the university in every possible way; to de- velop social activities; to encourage individ- ual participation and a sense of responsibility toward each other; and to be a medium by which the Christian standards of the univer- sity may be upheld. Officers: Mildred Crago, president; Evelyn Hirt, vice-president; Frances Sammet, secre- tary. [113] With a sincere belief that the conscientious student today is the basis for a better citizen tomorrow, the desire of the International Relations Club has been to become familiar with the foreign policies of our country and to try to comprehend their cause and effect upon the individual student. The society is affiliated with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and is a member of the Ohio Valley Regional Confer- ence of International Relations Clubs. This year the emphasis has been placed on Communism, presented in a graphic series of seven lectures by speakers well-versed in the topic. Officers: Richard Fowles, president; Jay Essinger, vice-president; Donna Meineke, sec- retary; Dick Bayless, treasurer. WC Camera The Capital Camera Club was made a permanent member of the campus family of organizations in 1950. In the short time since then a darkroom has been equipped for the use of the clubs members and plans include the purchase of more equipment in the future. In addition to this benefit, lectures, demon- strations and discussions are planned for the regular meetings which will aid the amateur photographer. Prints and ideas are exchanged with similar groups and exhibitions of photo- graphic work are fostered. This is all done by the group on Cap’s campus who are in- terested in photography. Through their mu- tual cooperation the fellowship of these like- interested people forms the basis for the best in amateur photography. Through the year students witness and par- ticipate in activities which reflect each Var- sity “C member’s keen enthusiasm for sports, besides the regular meetings of the organiza- tion. where men known for their work in sports are presented, Varsity “C sponsors a spring dance open to the campus, the sports banquet, and the minstrel show. The min- strel show is proof that Varsity “C” men will act, and not just ask for what they want. Each year some goal is set which has to do with the betterment of sports and sports equipment, and all proceeds from this show go for that purpose. This year the goal is the dedication of the new field house debt free. These are forty men with a purpose who will do every- thing in their power to see it accomplished. Strictly feminine, yet actively participating in all forms of athletics, are the members of YVRA. Previously called the Women’s Ath- letic Association, WRA bases its program on the promotion of interest in athletics for wo- men, the development of a high standard of conduct, the development of skill for the worthy use of leisure time, and assistance to individuals in making social adjustments. The organization now has an active mem- bership of fifty girls who keep busy during the year with the fall and spring picnics, co- rec nights, intercollegiate sports’ day, and many other recreational events. The aim of the organization may be summed up in the participation, not primarily the winning, in all sports. Ten young men, students of Capital Uni- versity, have argued for and against the ques- tion: “Resolved: that the Federal Government should adopt a Permanent Program of Price and Wage Control.” The discussions were not over cups of coffee, but standing behind rostrums in col- leges over Ohio. They began in the fall, gathering material taking notes from news- papers, magazines, speeches, discussing the question pro and con among themselves. When finally the decision was made upon which side of the question each wished to stand, teams were formed, plans devised. Actual debates began in the early part of November. First there were warm-ups, de- bates with no decisions. November 10 brought the first decision debate in Cincinnati. The program was sponsored by TKA, and Cap’s men won two out of the ten rounds. elate About the happiest victory of the year was in Cleveland, April 12. TKA sponsored de- bate and discussion. There, for the first time in probably 35 years, Cap’s team defeated Vermont, one of the toughest teams in the TKA National. During the same weekend of debates and discussions, Michael Eberley placed among the top ten discussers of the convention. Debaters: Michael Eberley, Richard Grahl, Robert Grahl, Russel Grill, George Hartman, Richard Heuerman, Jerry Kolberg, Robert Lynn, Gene Swanger, Tom Williams. [120] m aAcjfUerS Everyone usually wants to be someone else or at least pretend to be someone else in some stage of life. For those who continue with this “theatre disease Capital has Masquers. Masquers, using the Greek comedy-tragedy masks as symbol, is one of the largest societies on campus. The Masquer strives to stimulate interest in good drama and to provide work- ing as well as social fellowship among those interested in drama and related arts. Besides three major productions each year, Masquers provides entertainment and equip- ment for many other organizations on and off campus. In addition to the dramatic works presented, they have annual social events in- cluding a welcome program for freshmen and the early-morning May Day breakfast. Little needs to he said about the National Red Cross Organization. Too little has been said about the Capital Red Cross. This group of 35 active members is the spark on campus which flames into regular entertainment units for servicemen and hospitalized veterans. They keep the student body in contact with what is being done for others and what they can do for others. Besides the enjoyment provided for Lock- bourne AFB and Chillicothe Veterans Hos- pital, the Red Cross unit sponsors the Blood- mobile at least twice each year. To those who have never given blood, the many on campus who have, can testify it doesn’t hurt a bit. The classes in first aid are another opportunity for students, something which will help them throughout life. [122] Officers: John Sievert, manager; Don Ziemke, assistant manager. Last summer a most unusual opportunity was presented to the Chapel Choir as a whole, and to the individual members also. Forty singers were chosen and, after much rehearsing, the choir embarked in June for a seven-week tour which took them through the southern states, across Texas, up the Pacific Coast, across Canada, and finished in Ohio. The trip, approximating almost 12,000 miles, included many memorable events such as singing atop Grand Coulee Dam, a recep- tion with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and a visit to Oklahoma A and M. 'Phe members returned with many memo- ries of the West, and the West is left with memories of the Chapel Choir and Capital University. Beginning its twenty-fifth year, the Chapel Choir is known by all as an organization steeped in laurels and tradition. Dedicated to the glory of God, and having as its aim the singing of the best of sacred choral literature, the Choir has attained national prominence. The working schedule of the Choir includes several week-end tours, numerous home ap- pearances and the mid-semester tour. This year the touring choir of 55 members jour- neyed to the south, singing in six different states. In addition to the Christmas and spring concerts, the choir this year has presented the Bach B Minor Mass. Wilbur E. The Men’s Glee Club is the second-oldest group on campus. This year Mr. Crist cele- brated his twenty-fifth year as its director. Ilis ever-present drive and striving for per- fection have inspired these men to accomplish the very best in male vocal music. Each year between semesters the Glee Club bids farewell to Columbus for ten days, and presents to thousands of people their pro- gram. This year the men traveled by “dog- sled”, they say, through snow and ice, into northern Michigan. They like to sing together and they like to be together which is proven by their annual social events. Their stag party in the fall and their formal banquet in May are good, happy-singing times for all. [127] A source of pleasure to the participant as well as a place for learning is the Symphony Orchestra. Symphonic literature cannot he performed by just any group, nor is it very often that a person has the opportunity to play the work of the masters. At Cap, stu- dents who have an active interest in music can do just that. Although they have not performed for the public this year, those involved enjoy the re- hearsals to the utmost. The challenge of Slm- bert, Beethoven or Saint-Saens never goes unanswered by the orchestra members. Noth- ing is too great to be untried. In addition to the chorus, twelve girls are selected to form the Ensemble. This group sings at separate functions to entertain, be- sides appearing at the regular chorus con- certs. The chorus of women, now number- ing seventy-five, has grown into another fine musical organization. Officers: Ann Kassing, president; Carolyn Seyerle, secretary; Eileen Felgar, librarian. [129] If you play an instrument and would like to join in the performance of good band litera- ture, the Concert Band is open to you through auditions with Mr. Crist. If you like to listen to good band music, take advantage of what is offered right on campus. The Concert Band presents two major con- certs. One is in the spring, and this program is the same as that heard by many people all over Ohio. Each year the band makes at least two week-end tours to towns in Ohio and parts of Michigan and Pennsylvania. The open-air concert presented on the evening of Baccalaureate is one looked upon by students as an example of the best way to hear good music. [ 13-3] Q ijninaMum On June 4, 1951, among all the other events of Commencement, President Yochum broke the first ground for the new gymnasium. The long awaited event took precedent as everyone looked to the future. Much of the credit for the victory of the new gym is due to the Capita] Men’s Luncheon Club. They’ve been seen for the last sev- eral years at athletic con- tests, lending a hand to pro- mote the gym funds. Each homecoming game they sold programs, presenting the proceeds to the gym fund. Their energy and hard work will be a part of the be- hind-thc-sccncs memories of CAP’s newest building. PICTURED: seated, Oscar Wicchers; standing, Luther Long, Richard Bold, Jr., Robert Wray. [134] IHI Everyone has dreams. Some people plan for dreams, some people work for dreams. When the first dream was begun for the new gymnasium, many thought that’s all it was. Even when plans were drawn and architects’ sketches were printed others could think no farther ahead. But the dream workers did work. It all began in 1945 when Loy auditorium was no longer adequate to serve the campus for athletics. Since then, students, faculty, alumnae and friends have been working to- ward the common goal of a new gymnasium, dedicated debt-free. $335,000 was the amount needed. It was fun to think of new and clever ways to earn it. Jugs appeared on various tables in the Union and other buildings and everyone watched as they were filled with pennies. The jug appeared again during the half-time of basketball games. Varsity “C” presented a minstrel show to raise funds, a program which may become an annual event. A variety show was planned by the seniors. Alumnae, such as Francesco Serra, have re- turned to the Campus at various times to offer their services with proceeds going to the new gym. Basketball games were staged, alumnae vs. varsity, and the receipts were poured into the jug. Girls sold locks of hair to the highest bidder, and then watched the pennies grow. The CMLC sold homecoming programs as a part of their contribution. Everyone has worked and are still working. At this date $309,000 has been received in gifts and pledges. The dream of a gymnasium, one which seats 2300 and will serve the needs of a growing university, has been dreamed, planned, and worked. Now that dream is near completion, and everyone always knew it could be done. [135] MIN. SEC. QTR.E=g ! : visitors TO PLAY I JootLuii Opening the season with a new coaching staff composed of Jack Landrum, Bill Range, and Denver Wood, the Capital footballers brought about a complete reversal from past form. The Capsters, under Captain Charles Meyers, won two and tied one of their seven games, displaying a brand of ball that had long been missing from these parts. Sparked by a brilliant group of frosh, and steadied by the experience of a few holdovers from last season, the Lutherans ended their losing streak of fourteen defeats. The streak had extended into its third season and was brought to a close in the season’s second out- ing at the expense of Iliram’s Terriers. COACHES CAPITAL 14—WILMINGTON 35 Opening the season against the Quakers from Wilmington, the untried 1952 edition of the Lutherans made several mistakes re- sulting in Quaker scores. Playing good ball except for these, the Capsters ran up 14 points on their new scoreboard and thus doubled 1950’s production in their first game. With the score going against them 20-0, Capital broke the ice with a 4-yard second quarter pass from quarterback Bob Bcrnlohr to end Gordon Meske to climax a 34-yard march. Bruce McGinnis made the first of his two extra point tries and the scoreboard read 20-7. In the fourth, a combination of Jack Gher- rington to Bob Kavanaugh, which was to be prominent throughout the season, clicked on a 60-yard pass play. McGinnis added the point to end the scoring. CAPITAL 6—MARIETTA 6 Marching into Marietta sporting a 1-1 rec- ord, Cap got a bad case of fumble-itis and crept home with a tie. Marietta scored first by recovering a Gap fumble in the end zone. Gap came back in the second period and scored on a Cherring- ton to John Young pass. An offside penalty gave the Capsters two chances at the extra- point. Their futile try set the tone for the remainder of the game. CAPITAL 14—HEIDELBERG 35 In the fourth game of the season the Purple and White saw too much of Paul Yackey, the Princes’ star back. Yackey s 21-point spree in the second quarter gave the Princes their margin of victory. Capital’s two touchdowns came on a spark- ling 94-yard kick-off return by Fred Davis to open the second half, and a 4-yard pitch out to back Ron James who carried around right end for the score. CAPITAL 16—HIRAM 7 Taking their first victory since 1949, the Cap footballers came from behind in their second game of 1951 to put Hiram away to the tune of a 16-7 score. The Lutherans scored first mid-way in the opening period when a 51-yard pass from Bob Bernlohr to Jim Congrove clicked for six points. Iliram then struck back to lead 7-6. Late in the third period Cap came down to the Terrier’s eight-yard line and when un- able to score, Bruce McGinnis dropped back to the 18-yard stripe and booted the field goal that put Cap ahead to stay at 9-7. The Purple and White then added an in- surance TD through a Cherrington-Meske pass. McGinnis added the extra point to make the final score Capital 16—Hiram 7. CAPITAL 27—KENYON 34 Trading TDs throughout the game, Cap ended on the short end of a 34-27 score. Jack Cherrington figured in all four scores. He threw a pitch out to Ron James who went 37 yards for the first score, then proceeded to throw passes of 27 yards to end Jim Con- grove and two of 22 yards each to Bob Kavanaugh. Fred Davis and Harold were the stalwarts of the defensive game. CAPITAL 14—OTTERBEIN 20 After trailing 14-0, Cap staged a comeback that just fell short at the 20-14 score. Taking advantage of the breaks, Otterbein was able to capitalize on them for two quick scores. After McGinnis had gone 51 yards, Cher- rington threw to Kavanaugh for the first score. Otterbein then scored the clincher and Cap came roaring back on an 87-yard drive led by McGinnis and Roy Gruenburg who tallied the score. CAPITAL 18—OHIO NORTHERN ( Surprising the favored Polar Bears, the Lutherans came up with a relentless rushing attack spearheaded by the bull-like running of Roy Gruenburg, Ron James, and Bud Shell to run their record to two wins, three losses, and a tie. Packing two scores into the last six minutes of the first half, Cap had a 12-0 cushion at half time. The first score by Fred Davis climaxed a 44-yard drive. The second TD was the result of a 30-yard Cherrington to McGinnis pass. The lead was increased to 18-0 when Cher- rington passed to Hal Horton at the seven, Gruenburg rammed to the one, and senior Hardee Hepler carried over for the score. [141] (f adhetlali Once again courtmen were found without a court to call their home, when the new Men’s Physical Education Building was de- layed in construction. Though they had to play the majority of their games away, and their home games on the Bexley court, Mr. Bill’s boys came up with an over-all record of 13 wins and four losses. In his role of non-scoring defenseman, John often successfully broke up two and three man rushes. [144] Dick Snouffcr: In his second year as co-captain, Dick again showed the speedy, aggressive attributes of a fine guard. Acting the role of a captain, Dick took over as floor leader and often carried the burden of scoring, when one of the regulars had a bad night. [145] The 1951-52 season brought along its share of basketball experiences. Both Bernlohr for- wards rewrote the Capital individual scoring records. Bob Bernlohr cracked Dick Ott’s 1947 total of 332 by two points and cousin Pug Bernlohr also topped the old record with a total of 333. Senior guard and co-captain John Horn contributed the most spectacular shot when he flipped in a two-pointer over his head as he was falling out of bounds at the Bexley Gym. Pug took first string All- Conference honors and Bob cornered a second team berth. The other senior and co-captain Dick Snouffcr led the Lutherans in their re- turn victory over OWU with 24 points. Capital did not lose a series, splitting two games with Wilmington, Wesleyan, Otterbein, and Kenyon. Centers Paul Katterhenrich and [146] ing 19.65 and 19.59 points per game respec- tively. Four of the first string members, Bob, Pug, Kat, and Dick turned in averages of better than 10 points per game. Again Mr. Bill turned out a sparkling court machine from an aggregation mainly com- posed of holdovers from last season’s team, which ran out of steam mid-way through the season. With his remarkable sense of picking his material to suit the spot for which it was needed, Mr. Bill time and again took reserves off the bench to have them turn in sparkling performances. Some of these players who exhibited sterling performances were Dale Griesinger, Bill Voris, Hardee Ilepler, Dale Falknor, and Dick Poth. Prospects are bright for next season as our two high-flying forwards, Bob and Pug, re- turn along with centers Katterhenrich and [147] Mr. Bill Bernlohr, baseball mentor for the 23rd consecutive year as of 1952, had to fill in the vacant spots left by graduation and the draft. The hardest hit were his mound corps and outfield where he lost two starting pitch- ers and his regular center and right field gardeners. Working from his holdovers, catcher Pug Bernlohr, pitchers Ken Hush and Dick Vogel, first baseman Jerry Essinger, second shortstop combination Dick Boehler and Don Shaw, and left fielder Jay Essinger, Mr. Bill came up with five freshmen and a sophomore to fill his vacancies. These are: outfielders Bob Bernlohr and Amos White, pitchers Gordon Elowsky and Paul Eckel- berry, and third basemen Phil Spieth and Bay Vogel. [148] [149] Jennis With his two top men gone from last year’s squad, Coach John Young had to come through with a complete rebuilding job on a tennis team that showed no great strength last year. After considerable testing of mate- rial, Coach Young came up with Jack Guth- rie, Dave Jones, bill Jones, Paul Andrews, Bob Schram and Bob Snyder as his singles contestants. Jack Guthrie and Bob Schram, and Dave Jones and Bob Snyder were his two doubles combos. TENNIS TENNIS Ap;74f rENNlS [150] rv£j m vc-sfry Starting this season later than usual be- ise of the late Easter vacation, Coach Jack ldrum has not had much opportunity to w off his men. As the team shaped up, ach Landrum probably had a better basis which to build than any of the other ing sports. With a good group of return- ; lettermen including Bill Paule, Cliff Tall- n, George Wilch, Roy Gruenburg and in Braun to work in with the new fresh- n coming up. The team should fare well this year's outings. n their first match, Capital trailed Wes- an 96-31. The Capsters came through th three firsts. Two of them were by first ir men, Earl Davidson in the mile and on Smith in the 100-yard dash. John Braun •ked up the extra win in the 2-mile run. ill Tallman set a new Cap record of 50.S ■ the 440 which was good for a third-place ish. [151] framarcil Sports Tlie intramural softball league came roar ing down to the wire with a three-way finis! for the playoffs, which Hofman's Annex tool in two straight one-run wins from the Mad men and the Bandits. The crowning blov was pitcher Jim Boehm’s homer with one 01 and two out in the top of the seventh. Th tournament was also annexed by Boehm anc the Hofmen as they defeated the hard-hitting Abes in the finals by a score of 9-6. [152] Tlie Dorks captured the intramural football toga with a 5-0 record, trailed by the Bandits and the Abes. Starting the season with a surprise win over the Bandits, the Dorks proceeded to roll over all opposition. The six-team race was one of the most interesting in years, with most games being decided by one touchdown. Dividing into three leagues, the intramural hotshots raced through their schedule into a six- tea m tournament. The first place finishers in each league were SAE, Grey- hounds and the Gridiron Grapplers. The Grey- hounds and the Gridiron Grapplers had perfect slates. After the other team had been eliminated, SAE took the win from the Gridiron Grapplers to become undisputed intra- mural champs. This year the programs were ex- tremely well chosen and presented something of interest to each student on campus. The biggest event on the Concert-Lecture Series program was the evening of readings presented by Cornelia Otis Skinner. The char- acter sketches, which were originated by Miss Skinner, kept students, faculty and friends highly entertained, and the committee who arranged the evening knew they had scored well on October 31. [1681 Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bird returned to the Mees stage with lecture and col- ored movies, this year presenting wild life of South America. The Birds view of insect and animal life never ceases to he fascinating. The last of the series introduced Miss Ida Krehm to Cap. Miss Krehm, who displayed a flawless technique and a deep understanding of the music, pre- sented a well balanced program of the classics and moderns. Ida Krclun Mr. and Mrs. Richard Byrd [169] u Wad. in cjCutlier, J- rotedt am Chaplain Owens C Lapef Part of the Cap family spirit is displayed in our daily worship periods of Chapel in Mees Hall. This year under a new plan, Chapel is held three days a week on Monday, Wednes- day and Friday. Tuesday and Thursday are reserved for such events as Student Govern- ment and Concert-Lecture Series programs. During Lent each Wednesday was devoted to the study of some great religious painting. At other times the musical organizations have presented inspiring worship in song, and the visits of prominent clergymen in the city and church officers have been outstanding. Behind the Scenes [172] Vespers observed its first anniversary this year of fulfilling the spiritual needs of the student’s life. The evening services were be- gun and are continued under the sponsorship of CSF. Every Sunday, Tuesday and Thurs- day evening, the tower chimes call out to the surrounding neighborhood that it is time for worship. The services are held in Divinity Hall Chapel and conducted by Seminarians. The type of service varies from simple hymn- sings to more elaborate liturgical services. The college student feels the comfort and strength derived from such gatherings and thus the continuance of Vespers is assured. Left: Vespers Committee Lower Left: Vespers Organists Mid the tinkle of sleigh bells, the fall of snow, and an atmosphere of holly, mistletoe, and pine trees, KSU once again produced its Winter Wonderland. Light seemed to filter down from stars overhead. Lamp posts gave a soft light to the dancing couples. The Spanish Christmas colors, green and yellow, spread cheer every- where. It is a never-ending source of amaze- ment how the gym, through a magical trans- formation, is made into a winter playground. The dancing and holiday cheer has long been a major feature in the social whirl of the KSU man, and this year, by making it an open event, Winter Wonderland was for the enjoyment of the entire campus. [174] S lueetbear t Jorma Considered by most as the outstanding dance and social event of the year, the an- nual Sweetheart Formal, sponsored by KST, was again held at the Valley Dale. The girls and their chosen escorts danced to the music of Chuck Selby and his orchestra. An atmosphere of Valentine’s Day and romance surrounded the couples. Hearts were in evidence everywhere, particularly the huge heart entrance at the foot of the stairs which entered upon the dance floor. Besides the refreshments and gay chatter during the intermission, the sorority members sang their toast song. More dancing and fun were the orders for the evening, which was crowned by the special permission to continue past the usual 12:30 deadline. [175] Pastor Schneider Pastor Grotefend Chats with Students Even on a campus that was founded on the principles of enlightenment, morality, and education, it is well perhaps to set aside a special time when the entire campus devotes an extra measure of time to Christ-centered activities. This time on our campus is known as Religious Emphasis Week. Under the aus- pices of CSF, outstanding speakers of the church are invited to Cap to speak on the theme selected for the year. This year the theme was “A Living Faith. The speakers were Pastor Oliver Grotefend and Pastor Stanley D. Schneider. [176] Waf Its difficult to express just what May Day is. It is a weekend in May, a queen, floats, play, dance, but much of it is just the feeling one experiences in the midst of the festivities. The campus swarms with alumni, parents, students, and their friends. Decorations are spread from one end of the campus to the other, saying, “Have a wonderful time.” So long as there is a spring. Cap will have its May Day. [177] May Day Queen, Donna Mcinckc [178] 1952 Maid of Honor, Kathy Fudge May Day Court (Lommencement At no other time in life does a person feel so much accomplishment and anticipation of the future accomplishment as at commence- ment. One phase of life is completed and another, bigger and greater, begins. The thrill, the challenge are all one. Friends will scatter, be married, settle into jobs and perhaps never see their classmates for many years. When old friends are met, years later, there is a bond, the link of having been gradu- ated together, which can bridge the chasm of time. ■ --.V L rv' v Roster Abel. Both are official institutions of the same parent body, the American Lutheran Church. The students of Capital University are regarded as good friends of the Wartburg Press family. A goodly num- ber of young people of Cap are, in fact, members of the Press family; and, of course, there are many alumni of the school who have working headquarters at 57 E. Main Street. It is with a great deal of pleasure that the Wartburg Press takes this oppor- tunity to extend greetings and congrat- ulations to the Cap students who at the close of this school year will be passing important milestones in their careers. Just as Capital University is making plans for growth and greater service in the future, so the Wartburg Press is planning the growth and progression which is an essential feature in any living organization. We of the Wartburg Press propose that the friendships which have de- veloped between the students of Cap and ourselves shall continue through the years that lie ahead. We invite the students of today, who will be our pro- fessional people of tomorrow, to re- member that we are here to serve. To those who are members of the American Lutheran Church we would offer the re- minder that they are, in effect, stock- holders in this business. Your Publishing House THE WARTBURG PRESS 57 E.
