A large aggregation of books, magazines, ami reference materials are available for the use of students. In its toner arc located the offices of the CHIMES and in its basement are to be found classrooms and the art department. [6] SCHENCK DIVINITY HALL is tin- home of our seminary anil as such boasts of a chattel ami classrooms for its students. Its dormitory houses over one hundred seminary anti college men. The unii ue feature of D. II., however, is the chimes which ring out the {Hissing hours. Versatility is the word best describing I l-IIMAN HAI I . It serves principally as a dormitory for underclass women students and as home for most of the administrative offices. However, it also contains the clinic, news bureau, dorm store, mail boxes, print shop, ami several class- rooms. MEES HALL is the center of music, tiood and had, on the Capital campus. Students fill its classrooms, studios, and practice rooms to capacity while daily chapel services, special programs, and concerts arc held in its spacious auditorium. CHAPEL TIME RECITATION HALL, as its name so aptly suggests, is the building where most Cap students have their classes. From its lower, the traditional vic- tory bell rings out the news of Cap athletic triumphs. At TROUTMAN-ACKERMAN HALL, com monly called siris' dorm, live over one hundred upper-class women. In its cafeteria several hundred hungry upperclassmen arc fed every day. In addition, the office of the Dean of Women and the girls' gymnasium are located here. With limited and inadequate facilities imposed by old age, LEONARD SCII:i Ch IIAI.L continues to serve Capital University. This building, now housing the chemistry and physics departments, will soon be replaced by a new building in which all the natural sciences will be located. [9] As an emergency measure to relieve the acute housing shortage this year, five former Army BARRACKS have been set up on campus. These tem- porary units each house sixteen fellows. The MESIDIWS HOUSE, situated ou the campus, saw its second occupants last fall when Dr. Yochuni anil his family moved into it. It was built during l)r. Mees' administration. Several rooms in HUXLEY SCHOOL, across Main street from the campus, were pressed into service this year as increased enrollment and crowded conditions made expansion necessary. l.OY GYMNASIUM served a double purpose this year. Until the barracks were completed, about eighty fellows slept and studied here; after they moved out, the gym reverted to its status as home of the athletic department. [ 10] ■ «1 Christ Church CHRIST CHURCH, because of ilS proximity to the campus, is considered the colicae church. On Sunday mornings, two sendees arc held to accommo- date all the Cap students and a collegiate choir, under the direction of Pro- fessor Snyder, uses its talents to praise God. [B] architects and guilders Bdication Harold L. Yochum, D. D. Assuming the presidency of Capital University this year upon the retirement of Dr. Mccs is Dr. Yochum, fonnerly head of the Michigan District of the American Lutheran Church. Dr. Yochum, a graduate of Capital University and of the Seminary, came to his new office highly recommended by officials of the A.L.C. and by laymen and pastors of the Michigan District. Youthful and zestful. Dr. Yochum promises to provide a great administration in the coming years. Progress, especially in the matter of constructing new buildings, has been made at a rapid pace since his administration began. Changes, wherever needed to keep up with modern trends, have been and arc being made. Because Dr. Yochum has done such a fine job during this, his first, year as president; because he is a man of great vision and courage; and because he is a Christian leader worthy of his high office, this book is humbly dedicated to him. Bicmocllcr Visits £ap [30] Groundbreaking On April 2, 1947, Dr. Otto Mees, President Emeritus of Capital University, turned the first spadeful of dirt for the new Science Hall. This action marks the first step in Capital's expansion program. To lie built simultaneously with the science hall is a modern dining hall and Student Union building. Under the auspices of the Cap- ital University Development Association, it is planned that a new gymnasium and field house, a dormitory wing on Troutman Hall, and an addi- tional wing of Divinity Hall will be built by 1950, Centennial Year at Capital. homecoming i Miss Jane Ulrich, Homecoming Queen ! 32] homecoming Miss Doris Alt, Maid of Honor Miss Martha Peters Miss Ellen Tidrick Miss June Thayer Miss Wanda Lyons Attendants to the Queen [33] Royalty Presented The Dads Watch the Game Mag ©au Miss Miriam Bierstcdt, Maid of Honor Miss Valoe Ulmer, Queen of the May [36] Wtau ©ag Miss Trudy Priddy Miss Martha Long Miss Doris Alt Miss 1 larrictt Paul Miss Mary Jane Koehler iw Court Miss Marian Johnson Miss Ann Tiffany Miss Della Sweet [37] Image and Reflection [40] [41] Seniors REPORT TYPING Speech S £ C« WRICCTIOK WORE 3P f« f + e o- I JZ y CUTS -12- cuapgl 1LL President PAUL STEINGRUBER Steinie . . . Both are official institutions of the same parent body, the American Lutheran Church. The students of Capital University are regarded as good friends of the Wartburg Press family. A goodly number of young people of Cap are in fact members of the Press family; and of course there are many alumni of the school who have working headquarters at 57 E. Main Street. It is with a great deal of pleasure that the Wartburg Press takes this opportunity to extend greetings and congratulations to the Cap students who at the close of this school year will be passing important milestones in their careers. Just as Capital University is making plans for growth and greater service in the future, so the Wartburg Press is planning the growth and progression which is an essential feature in any living organization. We of the Wartburg Press propose that the friendships which have developed between the students of Cap and ourselves shall continue through the years that lie ahead. We invite the students of today, who will be the professional people of tomorrow, to remember that we are here to serve. To those who are members of the American Lutheran Church we would offer the reminder that they are in effect stockholders in this business.
