CAPITAL UNIVERSITY COLUMBUS, OHIO OF CAPITAL , • VAN' ,• ••• ►. , V . :r' • •••- r ; - •- -s- .. t . . ■ ; ■ -. • • ■ ••■ '. - . ' UNIVERSITY This, the Cap family album of 1946, is respectfully and gratefully dedicated to Dr. Otto Mees, in rec- ognition of his unselfish and invalu- able services as the well-loved family head for thirty-three years. AT LEAST THEY HAD A HORSE AND Capital's home grounds have really grown since over a century ago, v hen the school was first started. Why, even a mere hand- ful of years ago, as time flies, our fathers were borrowing watermelons from one of the neighboring farms. Then, Cap was really in the country; for jokes, livestock v as bought on campus. This was not at all unusual then, but wouldn't you be surprised to see a bewildered cow meandering up center walk nowadays? ' The Cap family then was also very patri- archal; in fact, the idea of women attend- ing the college before 1919 was unheard of. Before then, anything went on (and off) the record—in a brotherly way, of course. Yes, at least they had a horse and buggy. Pago Four BUGGY The original campus on Goodale Avenue Page Five BUT THEY DIDN T HAVE A CAMPUS Mees Hall, college of musical knowledge for the more tuneful brothers and sisters in the Cap family, and has been the center of sounds since 1928. One of the newer buildings on campus, the Conservatory is one of the landmarks to be remembered. Divinity Hall Chapel, part of the Schenck Divinity Hall unit which includes classrooms and the boys' dormitory, and is the general headquarters of the seminary. Pago Six Pag© Seven CAMPUS SCENES Science Hall, one of the most venerable monuments of masonry on the Cap home estate, has a modern feature—the housing shortage for many aspiring scientists, who attend classes and lab” there regularly. CAMPUS SCENES Rudolph Memorial Library holds a special spot in the memories of Cap's younger generation as the place where cramming is done. Also, the library is home of the Capital Chimes, clinic and, to boot, is the source of art work done by some of our aesthetically-minded kin. Recitation Hall, the building of a thou- sand stairs, is imposed on by class-goers during the day, and by would be Victory Bell-ringers by night. Names and legends of present and bygone Cap family mem- bers can be seen inscribed and graven for the ages on the chairs, too—truly a time- honored practice, here as elsewhere. CAMPUS SCENES Lehman Hall, successively used by Cap brothers and then by the Air Corps, now is the home of many under- class women, the Dorm Store, the Student Union, and even finds space for a few class- rooms, not to mention the offices of the administration. The radical change from the traditional to feminity bothered many — but the progressives don't mind at all! Pago Ton Top right and bottom left, Ackermann-Troutman Hall, girls' dormitory; Bottom right. Loy Gym. BIG ELM I'll meet you under the Big Elm! (Familiar, isn't it?) This, the great family tree of Capital University is now witnessing the second generation of Cap descend- ants — that's something special in family annals! Pago Eleven CHRIST CHURCH Christ Church, spiritual home of Cao stu- dents, is located just across the street from the campus. Here of a Sunday morning, Capsters come for inspiration, while on Sunday evenings, you may find the younger generation present for inspiration and fel- lowship a la Luther League. The Reverend Otto Ebert, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church. Such a large family as that of Alma Mater Capital has innumerable inter- ests and diversified affairs which have been ably discharged by our administration. To these uncles and aunts of the family tree go the appreciative thanks of their younger relatives, for through their efforts in a great part the younger generation is learning to take its place in family and civic affairs, and to accept responsibility as potential family heads. Page Fourteen Dr. OTTO MEES, President of Capital University The patriarch and head of the Capital clan has shown us by his fine example of Christian living and faith that we. the youngsters of the family, can also meet life with true courage and determination. We are thankful that we have been privi- leged to follow under his able direction and guidance. Pago .Twonty-four CLASSES Offshoots of the younger generation are the classes. Their self-chosen big brothers and sisters have steered them through the events of the past year to a safe ending. Too, with the individual co-operation of the members and their advisers, many things have been accomplished which would have otherwise been impossible. The Cap family album proudly devotes the following pages for the portraits of its chil- dren. NOTE: Students are classified according to first semester status with the exception of those gradu- ating seniors who entered college at mid-year. Pogo Twonty-sin Of all the classes in Cap's curricula zoology is undoubtedly the one remem- bered by the largest percentage of stu- dents—both those who took the course and those who had classes within a half mile radius of the zo lab. Its program is four-sided and embraces the following principles: to obtain for the veteran student all the benefits to which he is entitled, to assist the Dean of Men in orienting new veterans to the campus, to aid veterans in successfully completing academic work, and to keep informed on business and social trends by having speakers address the group on timely subjects. The organization chose as officers Edward McClure, president: Arnold Grueber. vice-president: John Wagner, treasurer: Betty Warman, corresponding secretary: and Margaret Schoenstra. recording secretary. Dr. Robert Geist acted as advisor to the group. This association now publishes an information sheet which bears news of interest to veterans, and has established a veterans' information bureau which functions with the office of the Dean of Men. We got along beautifully on the English versions but when the loader said auf German' some of us had to hum while our Delta Phi Alpha friends took over with the words. We all had a wonderful time thanks to D.P.A. which sponsors the all-campus carolling each year. Kappa Sigma Upsilon this year has again taken up where it left off three years ago. The members of this fraternity have pitched in with a will, having spon- sored an all-campus Christmas formal, not to mention a well-attended hayride at the beginning of the school year. Although the brothers of the Cap relationship have yet to hit their pre-war stride, there's no doubt but what they're not far from it. Pago Eighty-two K. S. T. KAPPA SIGMA THETA Many of the campus affairs—both closed and all-campus —have been sponsored by Kappa Sigma Theta, whose membership is comprised of Coplasses. In conjunction with KSU, KST members have enjoyed evenings of enter- tainment—and food. KST undertakes to welcome all incoming little sisters by assigning members as big sis- ters to show them the ropes on arrival. Traditionally one of the smoothest functions of the year is the Sweet- heart Formal, which this year was held at the Seneca, the rhythm being under the baton of Don Crawford. In its meetings the use of the Spanish language is applied to everyday life conversation, thus combining valuable practical training with social activities. This year in place of officers an executive committee served the club. It was composed of Ann Friedly. Dorothy Edwards. Bonnie Dozer, and Elsa Rehm, who served as president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer respectively. Joint meetings with the O. S. U. Spanish Club were held several times throughout the year. r W. A. A. WOMEN'S ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION With men's varsity teams claiming so much of sports spot- light, coed athletics are usually short-changed in recognition. How- ever. the Women's Athletic Association this year has been especi- ally active and should receive well-deserved praise for an extensive program successfully carried out. The aim of the club is to foster an interest in constructive recreation—both individual and team—laying special emphasis on the social benefits derived from organized play. In accordance with this aim W.A.A. has sponsored numerous sportdays with other schools throughout the school year. Otter- bein, Wittenberg, St. Mary's of the Springs, Cincinnati, and Ohio Wesleyan, were either guests of or hostesses to Cap girls for these days which combined competitive games with social functions. Intramural sports under W.A.A. leadership consistently afford pleasure and development to all Cap girls who care to participate. Important date on the W.A.A. agenda this year was March 29 and 30, when the girls were hostesses to the Athletic Federation of Ohio College Women, whose president is our own Esther Brueckner. They have broadcast half-hour programs each month from WOSU, and have presented entertainment for various college and commun- ity groups. Fall and spring rushings and initiations brought in 22 new members this year. Each year Phi Beta presents a gift to the school and also helps to maintain a cottage at the MacDowell colony. VARSITY C VARSITY “C” Varsity C” after a three year lay-off due to the war snapped back to life this year and has taken its place as one of the most active of campus organizations. Composed of all men earning let- ters in football, basketball, baseball, tennis, or track. Varsity C strives to maintain high standards of athletics at Cap and in inter- collegiate sports. Its social functions have been very successful, and it has under- taken to raise campus spirit by returning, things to pre-war stand- ards. The Berea Boots and Senior Award will once again be pre- sented the most versatile Junior athlete, and the outstanding Senior athlete, respectively. Such things as the football banquet, a fall dance, and the presentation of football movies to the campus, as well as a spring luncheon at which the new officers are announced constitute its activities outside of its regular business. Under the guidance of Professor Edgar Ebert, this organization has undertaken several projects such as an all-campus clothing drive for European aid and a defense-area can- vassing project. DEBATE - T. K. A. Proof positive that one can prove almost anything are these verbal experts tha members of Cap's debate squad. The subject this year was Resolved: that the United States should direct its policy toward free trade among the nations of the world. The pros and cons flew fast as the teams from Capital participated in invi- tational debates with nearby colleges and in several tournaments. At a tournament at Kent one of the men's teams from Cap took first place. The Ohio Conference tournament was held on our campus with our women's and men's teams both placing high. Other features of the debate season have been public debates on questions of vital interest and a trip to Purdue for a discussion tournament. Page Ninety-nino SPORTS Looking into the mirror of the past, we view scenes which long will be remembered by Cap sports fans—fans tearing out their lungs if the game was close or if Cap was trailing. However, when the Lutherans were sailing to an easy victory it seemed as though every- one sat back and breathed a sigh of relief. Knov ing that the memory has a strange tendency to forget the past, we arrange the athletics section as a mirror to keep reflections of past scenes with you until golf be- comes an old man's sport at Capital. Page One Hundrod Poqo Ono Hundrod Ono FOOTBALL . . . Since football was resumed in 1944, Bernlohr’s grid stars have won 8 games and dropped 4. Keltner and P.
