However, those who appear in this role will have ample opportunity to display their versatility—their capacity for trials and triumphs, for leadership and laughter. These qualities they possess in abundance. The Junior Class: Here we see the characterization of a queer type of individual blinking sheepishly in the glare of a double spotlight—the white-hot glare of upperclassmen supercili- ousness and the warm, heartening glow of lower-classmen admiration and adoration. This role is very difficult to enact, and will require much stamina and endurance to carry out successfully. The Sophomore Class: A vast body, garbed according to every- one's stereotype of a college sophomore. The roughest and most threatening among the fellows wield bulky wooden paddles, flourishing them at frequent intervals during the first act before the more timorous of the freshmen, but later turning out to be kind-hearted, after all. The Freshman Class: Portrayed by a group of miscellaneous types—some eager, some gawky and awkward, some possess- ing the polish and sophistication of the large city, many on their first trip away from the farm, and all greatly in awe of the omnipresent, omnipotent, and ominous sophomores. The Seminary: To be played by a select group of men. stead- fast in their devotion to Christian ideals and in their sacrifice of self. M. A. Young P. Nesper Pres. D. Henderson Pres. C. Havel E. They make their debut ot the tender period following high school graduation; through a series of knocks and boasts, they gradually take on a hardier aspect. They learn to take it ; their lives and attitudes become colored with a vital philosophy, entirely personal, entirely self-developed. From among their ranks rise leading players who assume the reins and responsibilities of student government and leadership in organizations. Their matinee idols must prove their worth to deserve and re- tain the admiration of the campus public. Many are content to remain bit players in campus life. Others serve as prompters, as spiritual counsel- ors and influences for the good among their fel- low students. All types, all abilities appear on the stage, leaving an impression upon their au- dience's mind in proportion to the sincerity of their enactments. 6! The name itself conjures up a vision of two figures, tall and short, varied in interests and fields of activity, yet unified in a spirit of brotherliness. It calls to mind such adjec- tives as sympathetic , kind , honest , straightforward . In view of the fact that for a matter of some twenty years the brothers Bernlohr have been busily engaged in helping to provide many important items necessary to a perfect setting for this drama of student life—such items as a stadium, an athletic field, well- supervised college activities, great athletic teams, and above all, the noble example of modest, manly Christian character—we, the producers, take the greatest pleasure in dedi- cating to Fred and William Behnlohr this pro- duction of the drama they helped to inspire. So do we find our talent widely separated and varied. Our campus organizations offer an equally great variety of activities. While the hurried sched- ule of classroom activity permits concentration only upon the pursuit of knowledge, our var- ious clubs provide the essential time and lead- ership necessary to develop a cultural under- standing of this knowledge, and to put it to practical use. The abstract takes on the form of the concrete; the jumble of unassimilated facts becomes the ordered list of workable prin- ciples and active ideals. Personality adjust- ments are made; original ideas and experiences are expressed; and a new attitude of coopera- tion is formed. Each talent may find its niche, each ambition may find satisfaction through membership in some organization, or in dif- ferent groups. Thus is harmony preserved among our cast—thus do we avoid any pro- fessional jealousy on the part of our actors for each may find his role, and with it he will find friendship, new acquaintances, and an op- portunity for self-expression. 10! nai re L’iawm r + MAIUAN DUSTMAN ‘'Dusty”, the Queen! . . . calm . . . pleasant . . . poised . . . serene . . . every inch royalty . . . one of Cap’s two blonde rulers for I940-'41 . . . the center of colorful fall ceremony. 106 107 KAPPA SIGMA THETA Prexy Margaret Ann Young reflects as she prepares for the fes- tivities. On April 11, 1940, there passed from our midst a respected, loved, and admired member of our faculty, Dr. Paul Bez, Ph.D. Dr. Bez began his teaching career in the city of Detroit in 1925. A graduate of the University of Michigan, he served as instructor of German for two years, attaining his master's degree in 1928. He reached the rank of doctorate at the same university in 1938. Dr. Paul Bez first became associated with Capital Uni- versity in 1929 as Assistant Professor of German. In 1936 he became Associate Professor, and ad- vanced to the rank of Professor in 1939. While on our campus, Dr. Bez was active in Delta Phi Alpha, national honorary German Fraternity, and carried on extensive research work in the field of German culture. It is with deepest respect that we dedicate this page to the memory of Dr. Paul Bez. 4 m . i p !:u eilUTAI CALL The curtain falls! Rounds of applause ring out! Call back the outstanding actors to receive their well earned recognition! At the close of our drama of campus life we call back to the glare of the foot- lights, before the curtain, those members of the cast who have made this a star-studded production. The applause was measured by a representative poll of campus leaders. Ballots were distributed to the heads of all campus organizations, to Dean Eich and to Dean Meyer, requesting their choice of mem- bers of the two upper classes whom they considered outstanding in the fields of organizations, social activities, and athletics. In response to this call, representing a cross-section of campus opinion, the spotlights come up on the junior and senior, mascu- line and feminine leads, in each of the three acts —Organizations, Activities, and Sports! .VWSfj 95CT M ii 3rf$sA ‱:' VpW MARGARET ANN YOUNG Effervescent Socially poised Diminutive Competent 138 ROBERT HEILMAN Star Intelligentleman . . well dressed athlete . . . capable leader. . . dependable . . .
