We see a lot of changes In people and in places, , Through everyday events And the old familiar faces. This is only the beginning So much lies ahead Let's remember the things we 've done And the words we 've thought and said. Though we 've gained a lot of knowledge This is only just the start, These years have further taught us Of the world in which we 'll take part. We 're going out in style As our lives ha ve just begun We know they'll be bright and happy Because we 're the class of '81. King and Queen, Pam Ftydman, Mark Evans . 1 W 7 Princess Julie Bjornson and escort Troy Buckley HUM! Once again a big success due to the enthusiasm generated by both students and faculty. Craziness was everywhere as the week brought out cowboys, punk rockers, Romans, and a day in which the school underwent a change in gender. During the traditional cardnal and gold assembly the king and queen were announced with the opening of boxes which revealed a group of helium bal- loons to the chosen couple. A good time was had by all as each class showed their stuff with original skits. The week was brought to a perfect end with the victory over Fort Vancouver and the homecom- ing dance. After a win over North Thurston and a 21-14 loss to rival Olympia the Cougs won 6 straight conference games clinching the championship before los- ing the last game to last place Colum- bia River. Last minute wins over Hud- son Bay and Fort Vancouver high- lighted the season. ln the State play- offs Mount Tahoma, the eventual State champions, routed the Cougars who had to play with their injured starting quarterback Jeff Carr seeing very lim- ited service. Jeff Carr broke nearly all the passing records and Darrin Gearhart became the 2nd leading rusher in our short his- tory. Steve Hahn, premier receiver, became the leading pass receiver of all time. Tackle Kurt Schmitdke, one of the few Cougars to ever play both offense and defense, was a stalwart in both the offensive and defensive line and free safety Jim Chamberlin left his mark on many a running back with his vicious tackles. Darrin, Steve, Jeff, Kurt and Jim were first team all conference, and John Hansen received an honorable mention. As a first year coach I couldn 't have been more pleased with the attitudes of all 30 players. They were all very coachable, but what impressed me the most was the encouragement they gave one another. As far as l'm concerned, Capital had the best freshman basketball team in the league. What do I think of Capital High this year? Well, being a frosh has very high and very low points. The high points are meeting new people and getting different challenges than in middle school. Everything being new is both exciting and sometimes embarrassing. A freshman 's bad points are quite obvious. So far this year l've been done up in lipstick twice, locked in the girls' bathroom twice, thrown in a garbage can, and constantly harassed by upper classmen. The good points have far outweighed the bad, especially for me, because I had the chance as class president to contribute to the school and I hope I can do more of that in the future. -- Sean Padget. We've seen many successes at Capital. In no one area, though, has complete perfection been achieved. This fact alone, should inspire all to strive for excellence. Let the pursuit of this, light our way into the future, both as stu- dents at Capital and beyond. - Eric Perkun- der L I feel that this has been Capital 's most pro- ductive year yet, governmental or otherwise. Not only has the student body willingly partici- pated in school impro vement projects, like the amphitheatre, they have also contributed a feel- ing of good nature toward their government and student representatives. I believe that the sense of unity between the classes and in the classes has blossomed, and the bond between the grades has strengthened. lt's been a good year. - Ken McNeil My senior year here at Capital has been a period of learning and a time of change. I have experienced as much in the past year as I did in all of my previous years put together. As presi- dent ofthe class of '81, I have had the unique and rewarding experience of working closely with many of this years seniors. We have had good times as well as bad times, but I hope most us will remember the fun we had this year, and forget the disappointing times. Hopefully, many of the friendships that have been made with students and faculty during the past few years will remain strong over the years. Thank you all and good luck! - Mark Evans 'l'llalwa sremember takin s cholo withlMr. ,V Q P Y 9,V f ff'ebster. The students look back over the year to see all the good and all the bad times. They see happy times and disappointing times. This year has had the same things going on as other years, and yet, it has been different. Capital High showed its class in many ways this year. The students showed how much they care for the needy people by giving 3,700 cans in the can food drive. The school also started new improvements on the school grounds. The amphithea- tre was finished. A new park is in progress. Also, a new readerboard was put up in order for people to keep up with current school events. On the sports side, there were happy occasions and not so happy occasions. The Capital Football team defeated Fort Vancouver in their Homecoming game and then made it to the semi-finals in State. The Freshmen.Football team was undefeated making the first unde- feated football team in Capitals His- tory. The Varsity Boys' Basketball team was Southwest Washington AAA Conference Champions, and the J. V. and Sophomore Boys Bas- ketball teams were also League Champions. Of course this year will hold spe- cial importance to the senior class of 1981. They will look back and remember both the happy and sad times spent at Capital High. They will remember the friendship of the fac- ulty and their own special friends. They have grown and matured and they will, from time to time, think back on the days spent at Capital and will smile at something that took place. Yes, this year has been basically the same as any other year, and yet, it was different. lt was a year that will always be in the memories of the studentbody, just because it was the year 1980-81l ,, ,, 4 ,, , 1 , V Q 1 , Ji: rl J G Wh fb ' . He beat President Carter in a landslide, and the Republicans gained the majority and control of the Senate for the first time since 1954. -John Spellman has been elected as Wash- ington State 's new governor. The 54 year old former King County Executive officially took over the office of January 14, replacing Dixy Lee Ray. - In Atlanta the dead bodies of many black children are still being found. To date twenty black children have been found dead, and police are still puzzled and searching for the heartless murderer. - The verdict was finally reached and the three men involved in the Gamscam issue were convicted on charges of conspiring to expand gambling in Washington State. They are Olympia lobbyist Patrick Gallagher, State Representative and former House Speaker John Bagnariol, and Senate Majority Leader Gordon Walgren. - Former Beatle and great musician John Lennon was shot and killed while in the lobby of his apartment building. His assailant was apprehended at the scene of the murder. - lran has finally released the 52 American hostages after 444 days of captivity. They were seized on November 14, 1979, by young Moslem militants who stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. They wanted the former Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was undergoing medical treatment in the U.S., in return for the hostages. The Shah found refuge in Egypt and died in Cairo on July 27, 1980, but the hostages were still not released. During their several days in captiv- ity many suffered from abuse by the Iranians. - President Ronald Reagan was shot in the chest March 30. The bullet collapsed his left lung. The White House Press Secretary, James Brady suffered a bullet would in the head which caused extensive brain damage. Secret Service Agent Timothy J. McCarthy took a bullet in the stomach while shielding the president. Thomas K. Delehanty was shot in the neck. No one was killed. John W. Hink- ley, Jr. was apprehended at the scene of the shooting. Although the turmoil in lran was major news around the world, in our school the topic was not one we enjoyed hearing about. The news we liked to hear, was about the things we as students participated in. We were thrilled about all of the exciting sporting events that we won and upset at all defeats. We might soon forget all the latest world news and political controversies going on. But we would not forget the classes, teach- ers, people or activities that made up the year. Football games, basketball games, dances, spirit week, Capital High School plays, and many other activities that we par- ticipated in are the things likely to be topics of conversation ten years from now. What we did was usuagy more important to us than any news Walter ronkite or Dan Rather reported because we were the ones who made up the headlines, . . This has been a SPECIAL REPORT. We now return to the regularly scheduled broadcast, already in progress.
