THE BRIDGE CAPE FEAR TECHNICAL INSTITUTE 4111 North Front Street Wilmington, N.C. 28401 Volume XVII FOR WARD This edition of The Bridge is significant in two ways. Of most importance — it is the first one under our new President. We hope that as its pages are perused, each student will feel a little closer to his school; and he will be glad to have been here. Secondly, this school is a bridge over which those seeking skills can cross into the areas of job security, better pay, and advancement. The technician and the tradesman can graduate from our school and sud enly bejn d,ernaj ,d«.whereas.bf ie, ?BI ' he perh l? ' lT3d ' TO ' 4aleabTe TkiTl. I ' hese gra3uates and our current students are our greatest assets. This edition of The Bridge is dedicated to our new President and to those who have crossed or are now crossing the bridge. BUILDING THE BRIDGE A pilgrim going a lone highway Came at evening, cold and gray To a chasm, deep and vast and vyide. The old man crossed in the twilight dij ,. The chasm had no fears for him But he paused when he reached the other side, And built a bridge to span the tide. Old man , said a fellow pilgrim near, Why waste your time in building here? Your journey ends with the close bf day You never again will pass this way. You ' ve crossed the chasm deep and wide , Why build ye here at eventide? The pilgrim raised his old gray head, My friend, in the path I ' ve come , he said, There followeth after me today A fair haired youth who must pa§S this way. The chasm which held no fear for me. To the fair haired youth may a pitfall be. He, too, must cross in the twilight dim. My friend, I am building this bridge for him. This beauty results from the expertise of our new landscap- ing firm, James A. Jones Horticultural Services. 5 Members of the Cape Fear Technical Institute ' s fac- Even faculty members need a break after a long day ulty, on the job — some at work in the conventional in the classroom, classroom — another at work preparing for class aboard the Dan Moore, our training vessel 6 Students enjoy some time out from class. For some this means getting something to eat from our cafeteria; for others it means a serious game of Pool. 7 A large delegation from CFTI attended the Spring 1985 N4CSGA Conference in Raleigh North Carolina, including two members of our Alumni Association. Class pictures were taken by Olan Mills Company this year and some of the students weren ' t sure if what they were wearing would show up well enough. Cape Fear Technical Institute students are serious about their activities; as can be seen by the number of students who ran for 5GA offices this year; but, even Dr. Satterfield and Mr. Bartlett take time out from their serious duties to have a little fun at the SGA Christmas party. Bruce MacKenzie shows his class how easy it is to make an oar during a beginning boatbuilding class. The Drafting students and faculty prepare for a drafting class to begin. During the Spring commencement exercises Ike Brown, SGA President presented Mr. M.J. McLeod, outgoing CFTI President, with a plaque commemorating his many years of service to CFTI and to the SGA. Also on hand to congratulate the graduating class was Carl Malpass, Dean of Student Affairs and Patricia Roderick, past SGA President and CFTI Alumni Association Parliamentarian. Ms. Barbara Schwartz attended the spring reception for graduates sponsored by the CFTI Alumni Association. 12 DOTi SGA HOTDOG ROAST 13 tkhnk:al wstitute Cape Fear Technical Institute has some of the prettiest girls in the state; as witnessed by those turning out for our Ms. CFTl Pageants. Ms. CFTI — 1984 and her court graced our float in the 1985 Azalea Parade. 14 % % Mr. Malpass, Dean of Student Affairs and SGA President, Ike Brown contemplate whether they should order more food for the SGA Fall Hotdog Roast. 15 SGA PRESIDENT Isaiah “Ike Brown Curriculum: Light Construction Residence: Wilmington, North Carolina Activities Include: Membership in several local organizations; and in the N4CSGA as a member of the , executive council serving as Parliamentarian. This is Ike ' s second year as SGA Presi- dent. He has also served as Treasurer of CFTI ' s SGA and as Specific Problems Chairperson for the N4CSGA. Ike has brought to the office of President a new respect and professionalism that hereto- fore has eluded it. Our thanks go to Ike Brown for a job well done! 16 SGA OFFICERS President Isaiah ‘‘Ike” Brown Vice-Presiden t Mark Vincent Treasurer Jamie Garrett SGA HALLOWEEN PROGRAM Contestants and audience alike seemed to enjoy themselves at the SGA sponsored Halloween party held in the cafeteria area on October 29th.
