Inst, students take time out of their busy schedules to participate in community activities! Julius LaRay from the Paralegal curriculum puts on the fireworks displays that are held here in Wilmington on various occasions during the year, other students partici- pate by entering either the raft race or the road race during “RiverFest 82” and still others participate by photograph- ing these events, some of the other events and also some of the outstanding scenery that we have here in Cape Fear Country! CFTI is located on the lower Cape Fear River, and a good portion of its programs are marine oriented. Our Commercial Fishing Curriculum uses the “North Star” to implement its program; while the Marine Tech. Cur- riculum charters the “Cape Hatteras”, a research ves- sel which is owned by the Duke UNC Oceanographic Consortium. Students in the Marine Tech. I, Romeo group were privileged to be the first class to sail aboard the “Cape Hatteras” after she was christened in Janu- ary of 1982. NQRTH«STAR Night students take a variety of classes, some to further their education and others to enrich their lives; But; whatever their reasons for attending these classes the end results are worth their time spent. I A representative from the local Red Cross chapter spoke to Senate members to help get one of the Semi-Annual Blood drives, that we have here at Cape Fear Tech., rolling: and at the same meeting the photographer from the school newspaper was caught snapping a few candids. 10 The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce helps to make new students at CFTI welcome by serving them apples and drinks from a booth set up in front of the school, during registration. Making people feel welcome seems to be a password here at CFTI whether in a classroom in one of the main buildings or down at the barge on the riverfront. The three people you are most likely to see around campus are Shirley King, Receptionist for student Affairs, Larry Nissen, Security Officer, and Ann Levins, who takes care of the grounds. You’re also apt to see Mr. Bright talking to students about the school newspaper, or Ms. Rea-Poteat going around school taking pictures for the yearbook: and if you pop your head into room S-114 you might see the Annual staff hard at work! TIME FOR REST CFTi students and faculty take time out for relaxation in many forms. Some of them go out for a breath of fresh air, others need a nap, and still others find relaxation by playing a game of Chess with friends. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT In a time of soaring inflation and ever increasing unemployment, technical schools must make sure that they are providing well-planned, sound programs in the technologies, the sciences, the trade skills, and the related areas that make all skills work. We must provide all of the important support functions whether the need involves money, space, superior instruction, or sophisticated equipment. Our students must be given the opportunity to develop their career = plans and carry them forward to employment. Industry and business requires, and demands, an employee who is highly motivated and better trained than were the past generation of employees. Methods of production and products have reached a level of technology that few of us dreamed of only a few years ago. At Cape Fear Tech I think that we have been most fortunate in assembling a dedicated and superior group of people who, with the support of Industry, the community, and our state government, have been able to provide you, the students, with the background to be successful in almost anything you attempt. Our graduates have been well-accepted by employers in the past, and we are proud of them. Your opportunity is here, and I am sure you will work hard to gain the knowledge you need. We want you to succeed and to be the finest group of graduates we have ever had. 14 1 Some of the SGA activities this year included; the “Spring Fling” held in May at Hugh MacCrae Park, the Hot Dog Roast and the elections of SGA officers held on Campus in the fall. Although each SGA activity involved many hours of planning and hard work, it proved to be time well spent. 15 SGA HOT DOG ROAST The Fall Quarter SGA Hotdog Roast was a big success! The Me- morial Park proved to be an ideal spot to hold it in, and the weather- man was extra kind to us, providing us with a perfect day for socializing. Everyone enjoyed the food and in- formality of the occasion. Even faculty and staff members showed their enthusiasm by eating their fair share! c I T 16 A safe and sane weight loss plan. New. The 1982-83 yearbook is dedicated to two of our schools finest men; Mr. Robert D. Bass who retired on November 1, 1982, and Mr. James L. Watters who retired on December 31, 1982. Mr. Bass was the schools registrar from 1967 until he retired In November. He is a member of CRACO (College Administrators and College Registrars Organization), The American Legion, Toastmasters of America and the Ma- sons. His hobbies include fishing hunting and more recent- ly golf. Mr. Bass made himself available to both students and faculty alike whenever the need arose. Mr. Watters is a graduate of New Hanover High School and attended Wilmington College. He is a Veteran of World War II and of the Army of Occupation in Germany following WWII. He retired from the Army Reserve with the rank of Captain. He was an instructor at New Hanover High School before coming to CFTI. He developed the underwater welding program at CFTI — the first and, to the best of my knowledge, the only one in a public technical institute in the United States. Mr. Watters ' ability in the welding trade is recognized throughout the country. Firms from as far away as California have used his services to test potential employees for them. We would like to thank both Mr. Bass and Mr. Watters for the many untiring hours of dedicated service that they have given the students, faculty and staff of CFTI, and to wish them the continued success in future endeavors that they both richly deserve. 28 SPORTS SPAN ALL SEASONS ' ff f • •, V 4 • •- V % ■ ' ■■ ' 4! ' ' t 0 This team has taken time to build interest and strength. It became ap- parent during the ECCCAC tourna- ment that the womens softball team has paralleled the performance of the mens team by winning the tour- nament. Coach Stewart feels that the 1982- 83 season looks very promising. 31 N S S O F T B A L L The mens softball team has always been a strong team. The 1982-83 softball season is a rebuilding year due to the majority of play- ers that have graduated. With the interest and talent that has been shown by the male students, it looks like another successful year in men’s softball! 32 I N T R A M U R A L T U G o F W A R CFTl saw some very strenuous intra-mural Tug- of-War and Volleyball games at the Spring Fling and Fall Fling activities this year in Hugh Macrae Park. The Marine Tech, team won both the Volleyball and the Tug-of-War championships for the year. 34 35 The golf team has won the ECCCAC regular season and tournament for the last 5 years. The 1982-83 season looks very bright, and Coach Stewart is looking forward to an- other good season. The golf schedule has been expanded to include playing colleges outside our conference such as Mt. Jackson Nursing Education Sandra Dumond Nursing Education Letter From The Editor: Although we did not have a formal staff for “The Bridge” this year, there were many people who contributed their time and talents to make it the best yearbook ever! I would like to thank those people for without them there would be no Bridge. First the photographers: Ms. Rea Poteat, Karen Davis, Pete Clark, John Funderburke, Kathy Owens, Dave Brown and Nick Howard. Those who contributed articles: Joanne Morgan, Jim Reed, Kathy Owens, and Faye Marshburn. The advertizing team who worked so hard to get all the ads for us; Bill Clark, Pam Warner, and Becky Stanford. Faye Marshburn, for helping with all the little things that kept popping up. I’d also like to thank the faculty and staff of CFTI for the cooperation we received from them in gathering together information for us to use. Last but not least I want to thank Nick Howard, who was our advisor, and Rick Stewart whose help we could not have done without! Thanks Again 112 f- r I I L: Mm
