THE BRIDGE Volume XIII Cape Fear Technical Institute Wilmington, North Carolina I 3 CFTI erupted on September 2, 1981 with registration to begin the new year. There were new faces on cam- pus — all of whom were around trying to capture the activities. The first day of classes moved right along with new books, new friends, and new teachers; everyone seemed eager to start on a new year. As the year progressed, activities such as sports, SGA events, etc. began to stir. Practices began, teams were chosen, cheerleaders were “getting it all together’’ and hot dog roast were on the way. These events seemed to bring out the GOOD VIBRATIONS in all of us. GENERATES 6 GOOD 8 . . . VIBRATIONS! As the hot summer nights yielded for the cool fall to arrive, we here at Cape Fear Tech still maintained our spirit. Although it got awfully cold walking from the parking lot to the building in the mornings, somehow we seemed to make it. Rain sometimes dampened exam days, but the thought of another quarter ending pulled us through. As the fall fell to winter and the winter stood aside for summer, we kept right on working. Working towards graduation! When graduation finally fell upon us, we were ready for a break and the Good 01’ Summertime! 9 The scene at CFTI this year was a very unique one. From Levis ... to Calvin Kleins . . . From Mike’s ... to Penny Loafers ... we had it all. We really flowed with good vibrations as we strutted around campus in our preppy clothes or in our t-shirts and jeans. Talk of the campus this year was “Beach Boys Melody’’, General Hospital, attempted assasination of President Reagan and a new school sport, soccer! Yep, here at CFTI we kept those GOOD, GOOD, GOOD, VIBRA- TIONS rolling right along with style! 10 11 RAEFORD BROWN If you were a returning student here at Front St. University, you may have thought that you were lost the first time you visited our cafeteria this year. Well, the truth is, your not lost you are right here. Right in the middle of our new cafeteria! Crenshaw Vending has preceded to move in and serve us hot foods, as well as cold. They have a variety of goods. From pizza to candy bars! So stop on in and check it out. You’ll find that the food is great! 14 SMILE FOR THE BIRDIE Something new came to campus this year — something which was needed for quite sometime — student ID’s!! Whether we needed them to receive student discounts, be admitted to various clubs around town, or whatever the case, we now all carry our own smiling faces around on a CFTI student card. The ID’S were taken by our own audo- visual department under the instruction of Nick Howard. Many thanks to you and your crew! So remember, be prepared for picture taking during registration next year, don’t break our camera, and . . . Smile for the Birdie! C.F.T.I. AT LEISURE r A special thanks to Nick Howard, Audio Visual Technical Coordinator for providing the yearbook staff with pho- tographs . . . and thanks to Raeford Brown for use of his work. 17 EmOTIONS . . GRADUATE AUTOGRAPH 45 46 “I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you.” Those words, written by St. Paul to Philemon nearly two thousand years ago, could easily have been written today by students, staff, and faculty of Cape Fear Technical Institute to Arthur W. Stroman III. The death of Will Stroman on October 15, 1981 left the CFTI community stunned. Words like “tragic” and “untimely” reverberated through the hallways and offices. At the age of 43 one has not even reached the “prime of life.” There was so much that Will was destined to accomplish that now must be ieft undone. Or was there? For more than a decade. Will made a significant impact on all who knew him at Cape Fear Technical Institute. His genuine concern for people made him a magnet within a group. Although committees sought his counsel for thoughtful, intelligent advice and his tanacious attitude for completing a project, it was his respect for the individual that placed him in great demand. Students felt a sense of awe in his presence, not that they were overpowered by him, but because they recognized the uniqueness of his character. At a time when age difference tends more to alienate than to bond, students found in Will the qualities that promoted trust and encouraged dialogue. It is a rare thing for one to touch and effect the lives of so many in such a short time. Perhaps it was because Will Stroman looked on each day as an opportunity. The student who had encountered difficulty could attest to Will’s positive approach for overcoming adversity. Administrators will recall the countless tasks he accom- plished that appeared to be routine and mundane, but made all our lives a little easier. Faculty will remember problems in curriculum development, establishing computer terminals, writing grant proposals that Will under- took with delight, seeing another opportunity to say with St. Paul, “Brethern, I count not myself to have apprehended: But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” This is not a eulogy for Will Stroman, but a celebration for the life he lived. The 1981-82 annual staff dedicates this year’s annual to the memory of Arthur W. Stroman, III. 47 Vibrating Sports . . . Vibrating Spa . Vibrating Sports The 1981-82 Cheerleading Squad began as a group of girls who had very little experience cheering together. They prac- ticed and practiced ... the hard work turned out for the better as it usually does. CFTI has a school spirited cheerleading squad. On the dampest days they have helped to brighten our lives with good vibrations! If the squad is not turning our heads with their new uniforms they are turning our noses with the delicious smells of cakes, cookies, brownies — just about anything your sweettooth is ach- ing for. The girls have worked hard at bake sales to raise money for their new uniforms. The uni- forms are pretty but it takes our cheerleaders to make them gen- erate those good vibrations! 51 1981-82 CFTI Basketball Team: Left to right — Laverne Marshall (Assistant Coach), Mike Suell, Bill McNeil, Tim Hanna, Sam Arm- strong, Danny Outlaw, William Hayes, Mike Carter, Rodney Smith, Walter Anderson (Head Coach) 52 “Sea Devils” is the name given to the mens basketball team here at cm. Our basketball team is a member of the Eastern Carolina Community College Athletic Conference. We played a total of thirteen games during our regular season. Nine of them were played in other cities, and four of them were played in our own Williston Jr. High school gymnasium. The season was culminated with a two-day tournament at New Bern, N.C. on the 18th and 19th of Febru- ary. All the games were played under the able direction of Trainer Man- ager, Bill Facello; Head Coach, Wal- ter Anderson: and Assistant Coach, Laverne Marshall. 53 Sea Devils Basketball Schedule Dec. 14 Mt Olive Jr. College Dec. 17 Coastal Carolina Comm. Although we have a yearly tourna- ment that usually draws the champi- ons, its the everyday use of the billiard tables that helps to give us those GOOD VIBRATIONS! 56 PING PONG TOURNAMENT The 1982 Ping Pong Tournamer was held at CFTI from the twentyfift of January through the twelfth of Pet ruary, 1982. There were a total of fifteen peopi competing in the best out of three toui nament. The Winners were: Jay Brooks — 1st place, Dan Sellers — 2nd place. 57 1981 Mens Softball team: Back row; Left to right — Adolph DeWitt, Paul Kyzer, David McNeil. Robert Ourt, Tom Richards, Richard Taylor, Ken Henry, Front row; Lett to right — Bruce Sherill, Charles Holmes, John Zuaboni, Randy Stonestreet, Tony Wescott, John Salkowski 58 The 1981 Mens Softball team played a total of fifteen games against some pretty tough schools. Coming in second in the Conference, and third in the Tournament! Anyone attending those games could see the GOOD VIBRATIONS and SCHOOL SPIRIT that our team sent forth. Our home games were played at Empie Park. Although our coach R.E. Davis is missing from these pictures he was very much in attendance at all of our games! There are trophies to be won at the different tournaments, and all around fun to be had. If nothing else interests you then there is still the good old Frisbie to be thrown around. Any of these games will pick you up from the drearyness of winter and give you those GOOD VIBRA- TIONS! 61 . Organized Confusion ilzed Confusion . . . Thanks SGA for adding extra fun to our regular school routine! 66 An hour or two before your next class? Research Paper due? Just in need of some place quiet to sit down and get it all together? There’s no better place than our own Library. Our library provides us with a place to go where we can just relax and listen to a favorite album, or spend time on a homework assign- ment. Everything a student could ask for or need, from typewriters to microfilm readers, books on philos- ophy to just about every magazine in circulation, can be found high atop the South Wing on the sixth floor, a special place for all to receive some great vibrations’. 68 LIBRARY OPEN LETTER TO OUR PATRONS Welcome to the Cape Fear Technical Institute Li- brary and Living Museum. We are proud of our facili- ties and hope that you will enjoy using them. The exhibits of antiques, as well as most of the other collections of materials on exhibition, have been contributed for temporary or permanent dis- play by friends of the library, like yourselves, through our foundation, the “Friends of the Library of Cape Fear Technical Institute Association, Inc.” We wish to express our gratitude to those whose material contributions and financial donations have enhanced our library and living museum.
