JI'- Last year, we freshmen made our first appearance at High School as the eighth grade. Although we weren't wanted, we stayed. Q16 of our first chances to prove our worth as freshmen came when Bob Leigh- ton and Lester Jordan were fortunate in making the Jayvee basketball team. An- other star was added to our banner when Lester won the mile in the Triple C Track meet this fall. All but two members of the 'rls' Ja ee team were freshmen. They played three games and, although defeatild, gaineydlneeded ex- perience. Both the boys and the girls had a basketball team. The former defeated Gorham twice. The latter played only once, at Deering. fNeed I say morelj They did do well, however, in the Play Day at South Portland, the forwards playi.ng with Deering guards and vice versa. Tie leading roles for the girls in the operetta Mari- anne' were both earned by freshmen, Ann Lothrop and Nan Buhlert. We have participated in the glee clubs, the chorus for Marianne', the swimming club, and filled three parts in the play 'Carrie of the Carnival. Of the many 'vic' dances given at school, we spon- sored one, on March 20. The difference was, ours was a Leap Year Dance. We're looking forward to being sophomores. A core has been instituted in the eighth grade program this year as a co- ordinating instrument in the curriculum. The students have been very busy, plan- ning their town governments and electing their town officials. In eight-one, which is governed by town-meeting, the selectmen are: Patty Dunn, Bill Brown, and Wayne Brooking. Earle Jordan is moderator. Eight-two has chosen a commission form of government with David Serette, Warren Moore, and Rodney Ross heading the presiding committee. John Gould is editor of eight-one's paper, the CORE CLARION. Janet Mercer is editor of eight-two's paper, the MONTHLY SNOOP. At the start of the year, the eighth grade held a series of small dances in the cafeteria, supervised by a dancing teacher, and in March gave its class dance. Photos taken and developed on the spot, Mrs. McGovern's piano play- , ing, Elaine Olsen's singing, Rita Cook's guitar playing, and a spot dance and door prize all helped to make this l dance very successful. H S '- The boys' basket-ball team has played a regular ' V schedule in the Portland Boys' Club Grammar School League, and one of its members, Wendall Thicker, won the q foul shooting championship of the league. ,4- , ,N v f ,...,.. President, Bill Austin, who hopes to enter Bowdoin next fall. After graduating from Cape in 1947, Bill came back for extra courses, and fell into the old routine with us. Best of luck, Bill! As you see ,we almost missed getting a snap- shot of our Superintendent, Mr. Medill Bair. You can't blame him for being so busy though-- not with Cape Elizabeth and Scarboro High Schools to keep in shape. Mr. Bair does a good job, too. More power to him! And here we are at an informal get-together of the teachers of Cape and Scarboro. We guess that every- one enjoyed himself to the utmost. The eighth and ninth grades meet on Monday, the other grades on Thursday. Recreation and fun are basic reasons for the club's ex istence, but the mstructor sees to it that the participants feel that they have also accomplished something during each meetmg. This one learns a new stroke, this one per fects an old one, others receive pointers on how to in -l- crease sprinting speeds, make turns, etc. It 1S always a fp tired and happy crew that emerges from the pool at the end of the hour. Records galore fell as they splashed to an easy win, totaling twice as many points as their nearest contender. Elaine Olsen was, by far, the star of the meet, having 12 points to her credit. She established new records in both the 25 and 50 yard freestyle events. The Caper relay team, composed of Elaine Olsen, Marilyn Patten, Martha Jordan, and Jo Hewey, broke the record set by last year's winning Capers. The team wishes to extend thanks and gratitude to Miss Jean Rhodenizer, their new coach. We all hope she will have many more successful years at Cape Elizabeth. After a fairly successful season in which they tied Falmouth and Scarboro for second place in the Western Divi- sion of the Triple C League, the Cape basketeers came into their ovm at tour- nament time. On the large Exposition floor they overpowered the Eastern Di- vision winner, Greely Institute, 28 to 23, and Scarboro, 28 to 24, only to lose a thriller to Gorham in the finals, 27 to 28. Glen Jordan was selected for the all star first team and Tommy Bourke for 'the second. Coach Holman was able to sub- stitute freely this year, using two complete teams in several games Graduating lettermen are Co-Captains Glen Jordan and Bill Drake V. Lacomb, R. Gould, C. Barrett, F. Inexperience rather than lack of spirit ac- counted for the season's defeats. Caper Captain Martha Jordan was high scorer with 104 points, Betty Conley was second with 66, Carolyn Maxwell with 57, and Mike' Black with 24. Veteran Marilyn Patten was under the basket to prevent opponents, balls from going through the hoop. Sophomore Barbara Jordan was right there after all the rebound balls, and Annette Sanborn, stopping many balls at the center line completed the trio of guards. The team developed rapidly during the season under the watchful eye of Coach Rhodenizer, and despite losses by graduation should be a strong outfit next year. 00000 wvsvwm 'cz-o'o'o'u mmmmru NJQJNJQJ QQNJUV '11CJ271'11 wo .naw P155 is-Q55 owggo flggci :r E-:r OOP-uhtxblxi Kxilxllxighph cn C 3 Z Cb SU '4 006700 mwwmw 'u'rJ'::'o'o mmcomm QV1 71 ofigmg '-sE,:::1rn 5'-3-Q-5'1 'HU535' Boggm 1 ur D-4 as :s Q. Willard, N Last year in the state meet at Waterville, Cape's newly-organ- ized track team placed third in class C competition, a struggle that was undecided until the last event. Veteran outfits from Scarboro and Wells finally clinched first and second places respectively. In an earlier quadrangular practice tilt, on the Cape field, Cape again bowed to the superior strength of Scarboro in the field events, but its speedy runners placed the team far ahead of Gorham and Windham. Ken Gordon, now wearing Brunswick's colors, stole individual honors by finishing far in the lead in the mile run at the state meet. Also a first place winner was Gil Jordan, in the broad jump. Other point gatherers were: Bill Drake, 2nd in the broad jump, Emerson Roberts and Gil 'Jordan, 3rd and 4th respectively in the 220, Spencer Drake and John Hewey, 3rd and 4th respectively in the 100, John Hewey, 3rd in the low hurdles, and brother Jerry, 4th in the high hurdles. This fall Cape waged another duel with Scarboro, again domin- ating the running events, but bowing to a better balanced team. Gil Jordan won both the broad jump and 220, beating the state champion Hayden in the latter event. He added a third place in the 100 for a successful day. Freshman Lester Jordan won the mile in the first race of his career, and Bob Hapworth took the 440 in fast time. Other point winners were Bill Drake, Emerson Roberts, Tommy Small, Don Madsen, Don Willard, Keith Moody, and Chris Buhlert. The Cape runners will be troublesome again this spring, but Coach Cushman is scanning the student body for some strong arm boys who can grab needed places in the shot, discus, and javelin. 202.53-I Led by Captain Johnny Hewey, veteran second sacker, Cape High finished second to Standish last spring in the Western Division of the Triple C League, winning five and losing three. Already the candidates are limbering up in the gym preparing for another season's campaign. As a nucleus around which to build, Coach Madden, who replaces Harry Hayes, will have five lettermen, Co-captains Dick Gould and Henry Hanscom, who played third base and shortstop respectively last year, fireball pitcher Keith Moody, catcher Bill Drake, and outfielders Emery Patten and Ken Leonard. To fill in the gaps created by graduation will be Cliff Neilson, Bob Hapworth, Roger Dinsmore, Nelson Butler and Norm Asbury, who were varsity subs last year, plus some promising recruits from r+ :r fb Ph '1 CD UI nv :1 O D-' ID Ill Ill E :r o sv Q: E ,.. :J UI 1-9- sv '1 rf .... :1 on cr CD '1 1-0- :r U1 Summary of 1947 League Games Cape 7 ..... Besides feeding the fires, he swept up after all 261 of us, and made the school one of the neatest in the state, Thanks a million, Mr, Verrill! xt'- Here are our valiant lunch workers, the ones who suf- fered through the lunch periods, Capably headed by Mrs, Hall, they are, Mrs. Ethel Fellows, Mrs. Ola Tracy, and Mrs. Evelyn Sweetsir. They worked all morning during classes so that we poor, starving creatures could get e- nough sustenance to stagger through the rest of the aft- ernoon, Did we appreciate it! Grouped here are our bus drivers, lVlr. Ward, Mr. Knight and Mr. Phinney, who carried us to and from school, No matter what the weather, they were always on the job, ready to drive us to basketball games, Music Festivals, and the like.
