PROGRAM VeAREOOK StAFF, i 2000 MAN My name was a number, I could hardly believe it If identity ' s worth while, how do you achieSve it And you know I was a 2000 MAN And my friends all loved me but they don ' t know who I am Hey children cry to your father, tell him, if you think he ' s wrong. Listen to the yells of your conscience, it ' s the only thing you have that you own. Life was weird and changing and often abusing Where the days wildest dream became our tomorrow . . . We ' ve finally walked on the moon And we ' re headed for life without war pretty soon Hey Children cry to your daddy, tell him, if you think that he ' s wron% Listen to the yells of your conscience, it ' s the only thing you have that you own. And I being young I sometimes confused it Ideals and reality I often diffu sed it. But although I ' m a 2000 MAN, I can try for ideals if only you think you can. Hey children cry to your leader, tell him, if you think that he ' s wrong. Listen to the yells of your conscience . . . it ' s the only thing you have that you own.. GARRY MORRIS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE TRIED TO HELP BRING ABOUT PEACE. THE OLD ' J,l j_ Long before anyone thought of a Cape Code Community College, students were hard at work in the classrooms we now use, for underneath the still shiney plaque over our main entrance are engraved the words State Normal School, and on the cornerstone is the date 1897. Until 1942, first as the Hyannis Normal School, then as the Hyannis State Teachers ' College, our classrooms hovised thousands of students, many of whom became teachers inour towns all over this part of the state. With the closing of the Teachers ' College in 1942, the building next became the home of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. For the next six years -- until the Middies moved to Buzzards Bay in 1948 — our campus had a de- cidedly nautical flavor. Between 1948 and 1961, a variety of enterprises were housed in our buildings which the town of Barnstable had purchased. Among them were the Cape Cod Conservatory of Music, The Registry of Motor Vehicles, Civil iDefense, The National Guard, and The Coast Guard Reserve. THE NEW In the meantime, after many years of work — much of it by our own Senator Stone -- The General Court, in 1958, set up the machinery for a statewide system of community colleges which ultimately resulted in the present school, one of a group of three authorized dtiring the second year of the state program. In October, 1960, almost a year before the first student arrived. Dr. Irving H. Bartlett arrived in Hyannis to begin tlie job of recruiting faculty and students and supervising renovation and reconstruction of the building. The following September Cape Cod Community College opened its doors to its first students, and began a new chapter in the rich educational history of the old buildings. Now, ten years later, we are about to move to a new and larger group of buildings. These buildings will be called the new Cape Cod Community College. Left behind are the, two old, now nameless, brick buildings that face South Street. We hope with the moving of the college, will only be another chapter in the long his- tory of these red-brick buildings. DEDICATION The opening of the Community College in 1961 brought many enthusiastic workers. Through the years, there has been a steady change in personnel. Many accept the chal- lenge of working in a small school, but few possess an undy- ing dedication to it . The following people have been at the college since its opening, and it is to them that we commemorate this yearbook. President E. Carleton Nickerson Dean Elinor E. Hanna Mr. Admont G. Clark Mr. Paul G. Doiron Mrs. Doris Fauteaux Mr. W. Douglas Mitchell Mr. Alfred L. Nickerson Mrs. Betty Porter The yearbook staff appreciates your wisdom of old that pro- gresses to the new. and wait till you see the foldout. these jockey shorts have got to go. come in and see me sometime. sometimes I could just scream we call ourselves the lov ' en sinfull lady, please this is the men ' s room with their knowledge to guide us with their wisdom inside us their spirit is always right behind us. A D M I N F I A S S C T 1 U A R T. F A 1 F 1 Y I N PRESIDENT E. CARLETON NICKERSON, A.B., M.B.A. The whole purpose of Cade Cod Community College — faculty, staff and physical resources -- is to help you further your education and develop as a person. For its accomplishment of this purpose the College enjoys an enviable reputation. And to this, you and those who were here before you have contributed mightily, for it rests upon the quality of the College ' s product, namely you. Perhaps I appear to speak as though all students are alike, yet here we have tried to work with you and help you as individuals, each unique unto himself. To quote Walt Whitman: It is to walk rapidly through civilizations, governments, theories, Through proems, pageants, shows, to form great individuals. Underneath all, individuals! I swear nothing is good to me now that ignores individuals. ELINOR E. HANNA B.S., M.A., PH.D. DEAN OF COLLEGE As you receive yoiir diploma from Cape Cod Community College, may it serve as a symbol of a job well done, as well as the promise of many opportunities ahead. For we hope this commencement will inspire you to further endeavors, either in formal or informal education. Our best wishes for success and happiness during the years ahead go with you. JOHN L. ROCHE A.B., M.ED. DEAN OF STUDENTS To the Class of 1970: To graduate is in itself significant but to do so at the beginning of a new decade adds a different dimension. This should be especially true in the ' 70s since it appears that it will be a decade of change. We must all be prepared for change. Since the status quo is virtually denied by the concept of graduating, we must accept the true meaning inherent in graduation which is to begin anew. Obviously to begin anew is to change ! As most of you know, I am also in the process of beginning anew. This change for me is not only going to be a challenge but indeed I expect it to be a source of great excitement. It is with that in mind that I take the liberty to extend to both of us, you the Class of 1970 and myself, every success! My thanks to you and to all the preceding graduating classes of Cape Cod Community College for allowing me the privilege of working with you as Dean of Students. I can only hope that our efforts have been of some value to you. THOMAS L. ALEXANDER Quote: Don ' t sell yourself short. ' Degrees: B. A., M.A., Ph.D. See -- Who ' s Who in the East. Much responsibility was placed on the shooting ability of Bill Harden and the playmaking of Ty Coleman. The rebounding depended on Jim Alcock and a newcomer Paul Cote. Veterans on this year ' s team were: Carl Alfieri, Tony Carnovale, Craig Lathrup, and Jim White. First year men were: Bruce Churbuck, Greg Gomes, John Ferrari, Mike Kennedy, and Dennis Lyonnais. INTRAMURAL This year ' s I-M program consisted of flag football, table tennis, basketball, Softball, tumbling and weight lifting. Bob Sylvia won the trophy for table tennis. In basketball the Celtics and Lakers were Co-Champs, and in Softball it was the Heads first with the Frater- nity finishing a close second. Once again, the Sophomores prevailed over their Freshmen rivals in their annual football game by the scores of 27 to 0, and 52 to 6. SAILING CLUB The activities of the sea- going Salts included ice boating, life saving instruc- tion and enlightened seminars given by President Nickerson. Lectures by distinguished guests presented them with the fundamental rules of seamanship and safety on the rough seas. The Club eagerly awaits the arrival of warmer weather and a soft breeze when they will once again be able to hoist their sails! 90 zoo The ZOO is the student disorganization that produces the weekly school bulletins and the sporadic large newspaper editions that provide a forum for community discussion and a vehicle for creative expression. USI -U.S.I. In October of 1968, the Union for Student Involvement was formed by a small group of stu- dents who felt that campus apathy and alienation had to be checked. From that small core of students, U.S.I, has grown into a student-faculty organiza- tion with a current membership of approximately fifty students and twenty faculty members. U. S.I. has a three-fold purpose: to promote intellectual and cul- tural interests at 4C ' s; to develop leadership and responsibility among students; and to motivate an interest among students con- cerning their role in the college community and the world around them. The organization has enjoyed a close working rela- tionship with the Student Senate, the faculty, and the adminis- tration. Our goal is student in- volvement. Our aim is progres- sive action. 92 s c Getting in shape for the roijgh winter ahead, the ski club was not available for a formal picture. Looking at their practice sessions do you blame them? V 3 The Psychology club is the newest of the college ' s activities. The meetings are a casual dinner and talk sessions held once a month. The purpose is to promote greater understanding among individuals. 93 ACADEMIA The purpose of Academia is to provide a forum for intellectual discussion. Any stu- dent, day or evening, who is interested may join and guests may attend. Academia holds a dinner meeting twice monthly. The topic for discussion may be presented by a guest speaker, a faculty member, or a student at the college. All students are most warmly invited to attend. It is your opportimity to express your views on matters pertinent to the problems and interests facing young Americans today. CIRCLE K The Circle K Club is now in its second year as a charter member of the Circle K Interna- tional. Their activities included a midnight breakfast during homecoming, and a bicycle safety drive. They also raised funds for a scholarship to be given to the college. The Circle K also holds inter -club meetings with other colleges, which supports all conventions of the International Circle K. STUDENT SENATE Kevin Carr Gail Bassett Bill Stewart The purpose of the Student Senate is to coordinate activities between the sttident body, the faculty, and adminis- tration. The Senate is made up of members from both classes, and in this way directly represents the entire stu- dent body. The Senate plans all social activities for the college, and allocates needed funds to the various clubs of the college. The Student Senate also presents beneficial student requests to the faculty. 95 SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS President Steve McNamara Vice-President Ron Poliseno Secretary Kathy McCauley Treasurer Mike Dean Persons in high station are not only answerable for their own conduct, but for the example they should hold out to others.
