CAPECo Ught ■Liberty O and til Learnmg _J B - Ught Liberty [PERSON MI LR ECOI TYC EGE 0201 0101047 6 When the flood of summer visitors return to the smog and confusion of their urban existence, they leave in their wake a Cape Cod, peaceful and uniquely beautiful, to be experienced by the students and faculty of Cape Cod Community College with a fullness any tourist is likely to miss. The college location on Cape Cod has been a primary factor in encour- aging well-qualified professors to forfeit the higher salaries offered by many other institutions, and come to teach at Cape Cod Community College. Cape Cod also attracts students of widely varied backgrounds and interests, thus making a career at 4 C ' s educational in more than just an academic sense. The serenity of off-season Cape Cod holds perhaps a greater attraction for our generation, in this age of tumultuous change, with its increased personal and social responsibility, than any that has gone before. Thus, we appreciate the emotion expressed by Henry David Thoreau — whose writings hold new significance for today ' s society — when he wrote, stand- ing on the shore of Cape Cod: A man may stand there and put all America behind him. DR. E. JUSTIN HILLS B.A., M.A., Ph.D. The yearbook staff of Cape Cod Covwixniity College knoivs that it echoes coinpletely the sentiment of the students graduating this year in dedicating this year ' s issue to Dr. E. Justin Hills, who will retire from our faculty this June. When Dr. Hills joined our teaching staff in 1962, he hro ight with him a wealth of experience gained from a career as both professor and scholar in the field of mathematics. hi addition to his having been teacher and mentor to students at five colleges throughout the country, Dr. Hills has contributed three published books to the field of mathe- matics, has contributed articles to the Lincoln Library Ency- clopedia, and has devised netv methods in slide rule develop- ment. Dr. Hills will leave us and his full-time teaching career, yet he tvill continue his scholarly vocation in the preparation of still another book. We feel honored that Dr. Hills considers his years at Cape Cod Community College his most rewarding ex- perience. E. CARLETON NICKERSON, A.B., M.B.A. An underlying purpose and goal of the College is to help awaken the intellect and spirit of the individual to the end that he may live a richer life, bring his maximum ability to his chosen career, and apply an enlightened understanding to civic responsibilities. This is a common end sought by most students and faculty alike. Although the College facilities are by no means the fanciest, thi s is more than offset by the quality of the teach- ing, the cooperative spirit which pervades the student body, faculty and administration, and the growing sense of in- volvement. And soon there will be a new campus and college, to which we will transfer these strengths. Here you have been faced with a rigorous academic program in an atmosphere of few rules and substantial free- dom for the individual. This has required the development of self-discipline, which it has been a joy to watch flower. To all of you, Good luck. E. Carleton Nickerson President To the Seniors: As you leave Cape Cod Community College, you may be con- fident of our continued interest in your education — botli formal and informal. Just as a store is known by its product, the reputation of a college is dependent, in a large measure, upon the success of its graduates. We are extremely proud to add the names of the Class of 1969 to the list of those graduates who have preceded you and who have won the reputation for the college which you have enjoyed. Elinor E. Hanna Dean of the College To the Graduates of 1969: Obviously you have our sincere congratula- tions! More than that, however, we would like to issue the challenge which is inherent in the very idea of graduation. We talk of Commence- ment which actually means to begin. This is the challenge! Begin now to use the fruits of your graduation to attain even higher things. Take your place in an institution of higher learn- ing, enter the business world or whatever you wish, but as you do so, do it with the conviction that your graduation signifies that you are ready to begin! John L. Roche Dean of Students LIGHT LIBERTY AND LEARNING faciilti) Every piece of marble has a statue in it waiting to be released by a man of sufficient skill to chip away the unnecessary parts. Just as the sculptor is to the marble, so is education to the soul. It releases it. For only educated men are free men. You cannot create a statue by smashing the marble with a hammer, and you cannot by force of arms release the spirit or the soul of man. Confucius THOMAS L. Thirteen colleges participated in the men ' s games and seven colleges in the women ' s games. Cape Cod was the only community college at the tournament. THE HELMSMEN The 1968-1969 Cape Cod Community College basketball team had a 50 50 win-loss season. Under the leadership of co-captains Larry Peterson and Bob Eldredge the team fought its way through the season. Coach John Roche, in his novice season, has gained val- uable experience in coordin- ating a team. Despite many heartbreaking losses, the team showed great hustle and spirit on the courts. These twelve girls, working together, practiced hours in order to be ready for the games and at their best. Win or lose, the team could depend on these twelve girls being behind the team through the very end. Circle K The Circle K club is now in its first year as a charter mem- ber of the Circle K Internation- al. It has held a Slave auction. Bicycle Safety rally, and oper- ated a change program in the Student commons. It has also supported the Blood drive and helped in Freshman orienta- tion. This year ' s club was headed by: Larry Peterson, Pres., Mike Tylor, Vice Pres., Steve Duffy, Sec. and Treas. Every college needs a service club and Cape Cod Community now has one. In May of 1968 the club received its charter from the International Circle K Organization given to us by our sponsor, the Hyannis Kiwanis Club. The Circle K also holds inter-club meetings with other colleges, which support all conventions of the International Circle K. The Circle K is the largest college organization in existence. It provides an opportunity for leadership, good citizenship, educa- tion, and fellowship. Intramural Program INTRAMURAL PROGRAM AT C. C. C. C. The Intramural Program provides an outlet for wholesome recreational and sports activities at the South Street Armory four days a week. Registered students have an opportunity to take part in free play or engage in organized ac- tivities such as I-M Flag football, basketball or Softball leagues. A girls ' tumbing club, a sailing club, swimming and water safety activities are also available when in season. A certified First Aid class is conducted during the school year. Free activities include table tennis, tumbling, weight lifting, and badminton. A Sports Banquet in the Spring brings to a climax all sports and recreational activities at the college. Sailing Club SAILING CLUB Bob Sylvia, Commodore Bob Haehle, Vice Commodo Donna DiCicco, Secretary Bruce Pinel Russ Rice Richard Smith Dennis Von Mehren The activities of the sea-going Salts included ice boating, life saving instruction and enlightened seminars given by Presi- dent Nickerson. Lectures by Commander Preble and other distinguished guests presented them with the fundamental rules of seamanship and safety on the rough seas. The Club eagerly awaits the arrival of warmer weather and a soft breeze when they will once again be able to hoist their sails! Nurs ' mgPwgram Burgart, William [Carlson, Joseph P. The Senate is made up of members from both classes, and in this way directly represents the entire student body. The Senate plans all social activities for the college, and allocates needed funds to the various clubs of th college. The Student Senate also presents beneficial stu- dent requests to the faculty. Coupled with these responsibilities are the advantages gained from the experience in student organizations, which instills a great sense of participa- tion and identification. Union for Student Involvement u. s. I. In October of 1968, the Union for Student Involvement was formed by a small group of students v ho felt that campus apathy and aliena- tion had to be checked. From that small core of students, U. S. I. has grown into a student-faculty organ- ization with a current membership of approximately fifty students and twenty faculty members. U. S. I. has a three-fold purpose; to pro- mote intellectual and cultural in- terests at 4C ' s; to develop leader- ship and responsibility among stu- dents; and to motivate an interest among students concerning their role in the college community and the world around them. The organi- zation has enjoyed a close working relationship with the Student Sen- ate, the faculty, and the administra- tion. Our goal is student involve- ment. Our aim is progressive ac- tion. Accomplishments this year have been the sponsoring of a Used Book Sale; debates; and the length- ening of the Christmas vacation.
