Located in the Arabian Gulf off the coast of Saudi Arabia, the State of Bahrain is a group of 33 small islands resembling our own Hawaiian Island chain. Known primarily for its position as the center of the pearl industry of the Gulf, Bahrain has recently be- gun placing emphasis in other areas, including oil and gas fields and refineries, aluminum smelting, interna- tional banking and tourism. Once again shopping occupied a majority of the crew's free time. Although Bahrain is one of the more expensive Middle Eastern countries, prices for brass, copper, rugs, inlaid wood and gold tended to be reasonable. Because evenings out in Bahrain could become quite costly, a great deal of the crew spent time at the Administrative Support Unit CASUJ, a support facility for Navy ships operating in the Arabian Gulf. ASU provided movies, game rooms, softball, basketball, swimming and club and restaurant services. I i i 93
