HISTORY AND MISSION Nalmes for the scenic National Seashore on the southern Massachusetts coastline, USS CAPE COD is the first United States Ship to bear the name. Commissioned I7 April I982, CAPE COD's first deployment was a 33 day cruise to San Francisco and Everett, Washington in June l982. WESTPAC '83 marks her first extended deployment. The third of four new modified Gompers class destroyer tenders, CAPE COD provides materials and mobile facilities for ships requiring service or repair inport or at sea. HOMEPORT SAN DIEGO The second largest city in California and the eighth largest in the United States, San Diego has been home for CAPE COD since keel lay- ing. lt is also the home of nearly one-third of the entire U.S. Navy including eight major na- val installations. And with its sunny climate, casual lifestyle and wide variety of leisure ac- tivities available, most sailors in the San Diego area would agree it truly is America's Finest City. One of the major attractions in the city is the world famous San Diego Zoo located in Balboa Park. Other attractions for animal lovers are Sea World in Mission Bay and the Wild Animal Park.
