EXECUTIVE OFFICER COMMANDER WILLIAM J. MITCHELL Commander William J. Mitchell graduated from the Uni- versity of Alabama in I96O. He entered Officer Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island in January I96I. Upon being commissioned in May I96I, he reported to USS FLOYD COUN- TY CLST762J serving as Communications Officer and First Lieutenant. He later served in USS SAN MARCOS CLSDQSD as Communications Officer from December I962 to May I964. He left active naval service in I964. He returned to active service in February I968, reporting to USS OGLETHORPE CLKAIOOD as First Lieutenant. Upon decommissioning of USS OGLETHORPE in October l968, he reported to USS CHIPOLA fAO63j where he served as Operations Officer until May l97O.,He attended the U.S. Naval Destroyer School Course, Newport, Rhode Island from July I97O to February l97I. He returned to sea in March I97I as Operations Officer, USS 35533 is WADDELL CDDG24j until I972. During the academic year I973-74, he attended the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. Commander Mitchell received a M.S. in Telecommunications Management in September l974. He re- turned to sea as Executive Officer, USS SAN BERNARDINO CLSTIl89J in December l974. ln July I976, he reported to.the Defense Communications Agency Operations Center as a Systems Control Officer. He transferred to the Defense Communications Engineering Center, September I977, in the Systems Design Branch. He returned to sea as Commanding Officer, USS TUSCALOOSA CLSTll87J in October I979 where he served until September I98I. Commander Mitchell is married to the former Barbara Atkins of La Jolla, California and they have two children, Eric and Meg. 11

COMMANDING OFFICER CAPTAIN ROBERT L. KLINE x Captain Robert L. Kline was born in Oakland, California on March I4, I937. He attended U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School as a fleet candidate, entered the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated an Ensign in June I96l. His initial tour of duty was onboard USS PRESTON CDD795D as Gunnery Officer followed by assignment to USS CORAL SEA CCV43jh from August l963 to June l965. ln July I965, he attended Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California earning a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. ln July I967 he reported as Assistant Officer-in-Charge NSAD, Chu Lai, Re- public of Vietnam. On completion of the in-country tour in l968, he was assigned to USS HOEL CDDGBJ where he served as Chief Engineer until I97O. The following tour was complet- ed in l972 in Naval Manpower and Material Analysis Center, Pacific Fleet, wherein he served as representative to CHNAVMAT CMATO4I4j for shipboard maintenance. His next assignment was as Executive Officer, USS GOLDSBOROUGH CDDGIOD, completed in June l974. He next attended NAV- 10 WARCOL, graduating with highest distinction. In September I975, he reported as Officer-in-Charge I2OO PSI Mobile Train- ing Team THREE. Captain Kline then commanded USS LYNDE MCCORMICK CDDGSJ from July I977 to July I979 earning the Battle E and the Humanitarian Service Medal for rescuing 84 Vietnamese refugees. Captain KIine's next assignment was as Chief Engineer USS CORAL SEA CCV43j. In I98O he reported to Staff, COMNAVSURFPAC and attained his pre- sent grade. Captain Kline's personal decorations and awards include the Navy Commendation Medal Cwith two starsj, the Navy Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Com- mendation Cwith one starb, Meritorious Unit Commendation Cwith one starj and the Navy Expeditionary Medal. He is married to the former Sally Virginia Baily of Morgan- town, West Virginia. They have three children, two sons and one daughter.
