CROSSING THE LINE On of the long-established traditions of sea-going vessels is the time-honored initiation that sailors endure as they enter the realm of King Neptune and Davy Jones upon crossing the equator. Before they actually cross this immortal line, all sailors, no matter how seasoned they claim to be, or how long they have served in the navy, are merely Slimy Pollywogs. Only after suffering the pre- scribed trials and humiliations, details of which are cloaked in mystery, can a Wog be judged worthy by King Neptune and his court and assume the title of trusty Shellback . The long awaited day for the Slimy Wogs on CAPE COD came enroute to Diego Garcia on the l6th of August. The day began with a 7 to I Wog to Shellback ratio, but as the sun met the horizon the initiation of nearly SOO Wogs was complete and CAPE COD was 942 Shellback. Our second initiation came just after departing Samoa on December 3rd as nearly IOO crewmembers met a bright Saturday as Wogs and left the day behind as honored Shellbacks. WISE WORDS FROM A SHELLBACK Pollywogs say that Shellbacks stink And their frontal lobes are severed. They always talk, but never think y And fail at all endeavors. If Wogs had thought these charges through To reach the right conclusion, Why will they wade through mire and spew To attain Shell back inclusion? So wogs, desist from whining so, And heed this simple warning. The more you squirm or shrill your scream The worse will be your breaming! SUPER WOGS LAST STAND Twas the night before Shellbacking And all through the ship All the Shellbacks were stirring And readying their whips. So I stood in my rack And yelled Wogs one and all Let's beat this crustacion Until he does fall. So we got out ofgour racks X.gWq t With blankets and Pillows And beat up that ole Shellback Until he did piddle.
