IN 0 CIA With a population exceeding 2.6 million, Surabaya is one of Indonesia's principal industrial cities.'Located on the Kali Mas River at the western end of Madura Strait, Surabaya is second only to Jakarta in size and economic importance. Its harbor, Tanjung Perak, is a main port of call for ocean-going ships. Nearby Ujung is lndonesia's famous naval base. Sura- baya is a mix of old and modern structures, Dutch colonial buildings and minaret-topped mosques, and boldly executed military memorials commemorating lndonesia's heroes in the I945 war of independence. The highlight of a Surabaya sightseeing tour is the city zoo. Largest in Southeast Asia, the zoo is home for sloe-eyed sambars, droll orangutans, black apes, and -the fierce-looking Komodo dragons. Aviary inhabitants include codkatoos, pheasants, cassorwaries, and hornbills. A nocturnal house and dolphinarium round out the collection.
