Live our town in strength and health, Founders, patrons, by whose wealth We are here provided! from Gaudeamus Igitur by John Addington Symonds WHO AM I? Vol. XXIII Does anyone know who I am? Where did I come from? Why am I always in the annual? Every since 1919, I have appeared in every book published in this school. Sometimes I am on the cover; then again, I am on the title page, but always I am there - somewhere in the annual. Why was I put in Volume I of CAPE CHARLES HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL in the year (1919). Why am I a tradition? Why am I a little Indian, clothed in a long dress, holding a bow and arrow? What is the little animal, trying to climb into the frame with me? For years I have puzzled students and teachers and friends, but still there is no explanation. Can someone - someone out there - tell me, WHO AM I? Dedication MRS. MARY LINDA ADDISON For your interest - For your helpfulness - For your untiring efforts - In preparing the commercial students of Cape Charles High School, we, the Senior and Junior classes, respectfully dedicate to you, rs. VICK............................English and Latin n A Senior Twelve years of study has a Senior had, See him so tall and straight and sad. For one brief moment he and a first grader One the beginner; the other, a graduate Have touched hands. One forfeiting his childhood The younger, continuing hers. Looking at her, the Senior wonders Was I ever so small?” While secretly, for a moment, He wishes his childhood could last forever And like Pan, never grow old. The first grader's face full of admiration Reminds him of his own gratification When a Senior noticed him - so long ago. And now I'm really one, also. But now must 1 turn my eyes Toward the future. Who knows what unknown wonders lie ahead? Yet we must see that our nation is led Towards the right, by us, the future. So shall we lift our standards high, With my generations' cry: Ad Astra - to the stars! Here we are, thirty-four of us, in THE THIRD GRADE. Our road of learning began when Miss Rebecca Scott gave 31 of us a fine boost in the first grade followed by Miss Ellen Parsons in the second grade. Miss Latimer tried to impress us with the beauty of art in the third grade. In the fourth grade Miss Clore worked a few kinks out of us. The next year Mrs. Powell really worked us hard making maps for geography. In the sixth grade, we enjoyed pictures and stories about Mexico from Mrs. Trower. Miss Nye gave us our first exams in the seventh grade. WOW! We also presented the play RASPBERRY RED, at the close of the year. While in the eighth grade we took an unforgettable trip to Washington, D.C. Mr. Kane and Miss Tate were sponsors in the eighth and ninth grades. As sophomores Mrs. Russell took us to Norfolk to visit the museum and park. We also decorated for the High School Prom. As juniors we gave the banquet for the seniors. And now we aie seniors. We have had a full and rich schedule all through our school years - working hard and playing hard - gaining and losing mem- bers of our class. In our present class of 14, 10 of us were in the first grade together. Joyce Smith joined our class, coming from Norfolk; and Jerry Joyce waited for us a year. We have gained much from each other's vari- ous experiences. And now we are about to graduate, and go our separate ways - THE SENIORS OF '60. ROBERT JAMES EAST, JR. v . What blood, sweat, and tears went into each and every one! Behind each trophy there is a story. Yet there is one common element embodied in each: Good sportsmanship - a quality that our school has always prided itself on, and rightly so. A trophy gotten by unfair play is not wanted. May all our future trophies be won by hard work and clean play, thus becoming proud and pleasant memories of the past.
