Signed Cape Charles, Virginia, June 5, 1969 In the nation’s Capitol this morning, a ceremony was held to award the Congressional Medal of Honor to those deserving. We are proud to announce that two of our city’s boys are among them. They are Commander William Eric Hudson of the U.S. Coast Guard, and Lt. Colonel Charles Steffens of the U.S. Army. It was announced today that Major Mary K. Mears will be sent to our Air Force Rocket Base in Iceland. She appears quite thrilled; could it be that she will be the only girl there?! ! Many of us will sit before our 3D and colored television sets tonight to watch the debut of Miss Frances Spady as the leading lady in the Metropolitan Opera. The corner stone was ilaid today for the new A.B.C. store which will be run by Mr. Richard McGrath. Dick received his degree (Doc- tor of Distilleries) from the University of Virginia. Tonight, for the small fee of $2.00 per person, you may enjoy the lecture, given in the Museum at Eastville (formerly Northampton High School) by Dr. Merita C. Long on Early Roman Relics and History of the Latin Language. Vv V Mr. David White has been promoted to head chemist at the Atomic Energy Incinerary Plant located at Cheapside. On July 22, 1969, Miss Pat Knight, one of our leading business women, will turn from the business of running her office to the business of washing dishes, cooking and making beds, when she becomes the wife of Mr. ??. Whee boy--what a long engagement this has been! Mr. and Mrs. (Hmm?) announced the arrival of their second set of twins. The boys born today weight 5 lbs each and have increased their family to six. Mrs. (Hmm?) the former Miss Deanne Etz is coming along nicely. The patent was released today on a new lime flavored cough syrup for children, developed by Miss Kay Detwiler, a local phamacist. Not only is it lime flavored but also in the shape of a lolly pop. There are two big announcements in the sports world today, namely Miss Janice Bowser became the National Women’s Champion Archer, and Mr. Robert Travis was named the new football coach of State Penn - upps - Penn State. Through the grape vine, or rather Miss Peggy Lewis - a telephone operator, comes an interesting bit of news. Miss Pat Nye, a secretary to Miss Mary Sousa (the commercial artist) announced in a phone call to the Kellogg Company, Mary’s acceptance to do all the Corn Flakes’ commercial drawings. Do not choose to be a common man. It is your right to be uncommon - if you can. Seek opportunity--not security. Do not choose to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after you. Take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. Re- fuse to barter incentive fora dole. Prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence--the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of Utopia. Do not trade freedom for beneficence, nor dignity for a handout. It is your heri- tage to think and to act for yourself, enjoy the benefit of your creations, and face the world boldly saying, this I have done. All this is what it means to be an American.
