INTRODUCING OUR YEARBOOK — (J4v A d4' l jOW' 1951 Published by the students of CAPE CHARLES HIGH SCHOOL CAPE CHARLES VIRGINIA CAPE CHARLES HIGH SCHOOL Let others sing of college days Their Alma Mater true. But when we raise our voices loud T'is Cape Charles High for you. We'll ne'er forget those days gone by, Those glorious days of old, When oft we sang the praises true Of our maroon and gold. And when at last we leave behind Thy shelt'ring portals wide. Thy mem'ries still we'll cherish long Whate'er may us betide. And when we congregate again With tuneful voice and strong. With joyful hearts once more we'll sing That same old glorious song. pf's We The Senior Class of '51 Dedicate with pride, gratitude, and respect the XVI Volume of The Arrow Mrs. Smith History Miss Clore Fourth Grade Miss Latimer Third Grade Mrs. Dunton First Grade Mr. Racey Science Mrs. Ames Librarian Miss Parsons Second Grade Mr. Letson Principal English Mrs. Trower Sixth Grade Mrs. Goffigon Music Mrs. Vick Latin Miss Upshur Commercial Miss Hale Seventh Grade Mrs. Powell Fifth Grade c usnimrs Betty Spady Nottingham Betty President of Class Dramatic Club '48, '49, '50; Glee Club '48, '49, '51; Library Club '48; Secretary of Class 48, '50; Basketball '49, '50; Cheerleader '51; Tri-Hi-Y '50, '51; Secretary '51; Honor Council Representative '49; Business Manager of Arrow '51. Many changes have taken place in the past eleven years. We have lost some of our members and add- ed new ones. The Senior Class of 1951 numbers eighteen, although only half of us began in the first grade and have come through the eleven years to- gether. They are Billy Bowden, Kay Mills, Nancy Nye, Joan Bennett, Mary C. Bundick, Lloyd Kellam, Albert Rayne, William T. Notting- ham, and Clifton Moore. These nine beginners were joined by Betty Nottingham in the second grade, while the next year in the third grade, Jackie White, and Regis Etz were added. In the fifth grade, Harry Kellam and Gerald Parks increased our number. We worked along together until our Sophomore year when we welcomed two more boys: Jack Ward and Jimmy McCabe. In our Senior year we were very glad to add Douglas Charnock and Billy Shaw to our list, making a total of twelve boys and six girls. We have come to the end of our High School days with many re- grets and memories realizing that School days are the happiest days. tWHAT? ... WHO?.. WHEN?_ WHERE? .. Modest JIM MOORE, the co-captain of our football team, Sets a good example with his smiling face and friendly beam. The nod of her head and the twist of her skirt, Gives to JUDY the name of a flirt. JIMMY BRADFORD, a A student it is said, But when it comes to praise, his face is always red. Leave it to AUDREY to work like a bee, In spite of the fact she will disagree. DICKY, our football hero, handsome and tall, Is always ready when Coach Dan gives the call. CHARLOTTE, who is busy with her books all day, Gives very little time to foolishness and play. Now there's CHILCOTE, if we recall, Is always talking in study hall. JANICE, who is president of our class, Is wise enough not to let opportunities pass. BILLY is the tallest boy in school, we know, But the question is - how tall can a person grow? AUDREY FOSTER with her foolishness and play, Makes our days happy, bright, and gay. JACKIE POWELL, a true baseball fan, Can tell the names of the players as no one else can. The blowing of a horn and the speeding of a car, Warns us that JIMMIE HARRISON is not distant far. For BETTY, what shall it be, There's no one quite as cheerful as she. JIMMIE LUTSINGER, known by all, Is always cutting capers in study hall. NANCY, a bit on the chubby side, Is always ready in a certain car to ride. May we say, CHARLES is one of our smartest, But never gets A by study the hardest. MR. RACEY, our teacher, is merry and gay, If we all know our Biology every day. Now that you have a line-up of our class, Our teachers' desires may we always surpass. And- Two years hence from Cape Charles High we will depart, Each of us beginning our lives with a new start. Giving up the old, searching for the bright, Hoping the future holds for us everything just right. Deanne Etz President Mary K. Through 1950-51 the Tri-Hi-Y has served the school by conducting assembly pro- grams, by having a snack table at the football games, by sending Christmas baskets and by selling pencils. Kay Mills, Ann Webster, Esther Stevenson, and Betty Nottingham, who were delegates to Blue Ridge in August, returned with many new ideas and projects for making the club more worthwhile. In October the workshop held at Accomac High School was weH attended by members of the organization and the club profited by this pre-planning. On November 4th and 5th the club was host to the District 5 Conference which had as its theme, To Create, Maintain, and Extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character. At this conference Esther Stevenson was elected President of District 5 for the year 1951 and Ann Spady was appointed Chap- lain of the House of Delegates for the Model General Assembly held at Richmond in April. Other delegates attending the assembly were Kay Mills, Betty Nottingham, Esther Stevenson, and Mary Linda Fitchett. Under the direction of Mr. Racey, the Hi-Y has done many things. The annual Conference was held at Cape Charles, and the club worked very hard toward this. With the help of the Tri-Hi-Y, a successful conference was held. From our number, Jimmy McCabe was elected Clerk of the House for the Model General Assembly. Also, Amos Dickinson is a candidate for Governor of Virginia in 1952. Wrestling and boxing matches were presented to the school, which proved to be very successful. Also the Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y sold drinks and sandwiches at the football games last fall. Many of the boys delivered suppers for the Com- munity League Supper in January. In all, the Cape Charles Hi-Y Club has enjoyed a very successful year. Many thanks to Mr. Racey for his help and cooperation. Hi-Y Tri-Hi-Y Conference The annual Hi-Y Tri-Hi-Y Conference for this district was held at this school on November 4 and 5. There were about fifty delegates present. The schools represented at the conference were Cape Charles, Central, Onanock and Chincoteague. The theme of the conference was ’’Create, Maintain, Extend. ” And the night shall be filled with music, And the cares that infest the day, Shall fold their tent like the Arabs, And as silently steal away. — Longfellow Q- Number in the Glee Club?
