For instance, we have civics and The chemical domain, And in geometry we get The solid and the plane And many are the courses we May follow or reject; As long as we advance as much As parents may expect. But also high school is a place To gain athletic fame Or in some other manner to Acquire quite a name. And while our graduation seems So many years away Its funny how seniors say. It is only a step away. UNDERCLASSMEN This page sponsored by CAPAC GAMBLE STORE 19 Melanie Markwart Secretary CLASS OF 1979 Kathy Brozowski Treasurer This being our first year in high school it has been quite a change from the Middle School atmosphere. The first change which we had to adopt to was our time schedule. We begin our school day at 12:06 p.m. and end it at 5:30 p.m. But the most trying time is our first hour and the 9-12 grades ' last hour, when approximate- ly 800 students crowd into the halls to get to class. After getting situated we elected Tim Brooks, President; Sandy Hunter, Vice Piesident; Kathy Brozowski, Treasurer and Melanie Markwart, Secretary of our class. Being able to get involved in Homecoming ac- tivities was a new and exciting privilege. Although this year we did not build a float, we look forward to the next five years in the high school, especially as far as magazine selling will be goes. We are very proud of the amount of money we were able to bring in and hope to do the same, if not better, next year. Helping us with our first year in High School was our sponsor Mr. Fred Hunt. Thanks to the Barnard ' s family for allowing us to build our float in their garage and thanks to countless efforts and time of Mr. Hunt, our Homecoming float swept second place. Shelly Culp was chosen as our class princess. Because of the overcrowding in our school system, our day began at 12:06 p. m. and terminated at 5:23 p. m. where as 9-12 grades started at 7:20 a. m. and ended at 1 :03 p. m. Our fifteen minute break to get our milk and snack is quite different from a forty-five minute lunch hour. But we ' ll survive. We are looking forward to the next four years in high school. All one can hope to get By solving a problem is To restore normality. The pertinent question is not How to do things but how to find The right things to do, And to concentrate resources And efforts on them. This page sponsored by CLASS OF 1974 THE QUESTION IS NOT HOW TO DO THINGS; BUT HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT THINGS TO DO. If we are going to become involved in transforming, not just the lives of individuals, But the patterns of human living, we must start transforming the patterns of communication. Of recreation, of government, of professional life. To work at this level, we obviously need, a deep professional understanding of these areas. We cannot be ignorant of social structure and hope of changing them; We cannot have an impact in a given profession unless we are recognized as competent with that profession. Student Council is intended as a service organization. Besides the routine approval of money-making activities, Student Council serves the school in several other ways. With profits from the magazine sale it puts on assemblies, awards overseas and college scholarships, and purchases items for the school. This year a new service was initiated: Special Clinic Funds for students wishing to attend clinics or workshops. It also initiated a Welcoming Committee to get new students acquainted with the school and classmates. Among other purchases was a Track and Field Records Board. To familiarize members with school policy-making, Student Council members now attend the Board of Education meetings. The most successful activity of the year was Homecoming, which was described by many as our best Homecoming ever. 70 This page sponsored by CAPAC HIGH STUDENT COUNCIL 7TH 8TH GRADE STUDENT COUNCIL FIRST ROW: Left to Right: Sandy Hunter, Phillip Downey, Gina Giroux, Kris Graybiel-President, Wendi Sieggreen, Raymond Lipa, Kelly Mackey. Last year we organized as a Junior High School Student Council in the Middle School, however this year we have met under the title Seventh and Eighth Grade Student Council, in the high school. Although we are concerned about the problem of these two grades in- volved, many of our duties overlap with those of the High School Student Council. However, we have organized a few dances and fun nights throughout the year for seventh and eighth graders. One high school activity, which we would like to mention is the magazine sale. On behalf of the entire Student Council, we would like to commend the seventh and eighth graders for their outstanding performance. We look forward to seeing these and perhaps better results next year. As in the past few years, National Honor Society (NHS) began this year making arrangements for the Homecoming balloon sales. Once again there were colorful clowns walking the halls saying, Twenty- five cents a balloon or four for a dollar. Meanwhile, Elementary and Middle School children eagerly waited to see the clowns in the Homecoming Parade. Of course, this day could never have been quite a success without the generosity of Durkee ' s Grocery Store, Brown ' s Department Store, Jolly Jim ' s Market, Clarkson ' s Dairy Bar, and Leon ' s Village Mart who each donated candy to hand out to the anxious children. Another important thing to take care of when the year started was to have members sign up to take tickets at all home athletic ac- tivities. We not only perform services for our school, but also for those around us. On February 13th, we visited the people at the Oakdale Center in Lapeer and those in the Goodells Medical Center and presented them with Valentine cards and cookies. This year marked the beginning of the nomination of two senior members to apply for a $1,000 scholarship from the National Associa- tion of Secondary Schools. Student Exchange with other school chapters has also been initiated this year. Induction of our new members is the highlight of each year ' s ac- tivities. And without the help of our new sponsor, Mrs. Marian Fischer, it could never have gone so smoothly. We would like to thank her for all the time and effort she has given to our organization. 72 This page sponsored by NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY. With the growing number of students in our school system, our yearbook too is growing which means more work. This year we are fortunate enough to have Mr. Leslie as our advisor once again; for without this gentleman the Yearbook would not be possible. Each year there seems to be more pages to work with and less time to do so but we have managed to carry out our duties and responsibilities. To help us financially with the yearbook, we sold can- dy bars in late fall and early winter. We are looking forward to other fund-raising pro- jects as well as working on our summer supplement. This year for the first time in many years the Chief- tain Staff acquired a new advisor. On the retirement of Mrs. Clarkson our Journalism I teacher, Ms. Redding, filled her position. Under her guidance we were able to achieve our goals for the 73 fall semester. Along with publishing a paper every two weeks we learned alot of helpful little points involving our work. From ex- perience it was learned that we should rotate our stu- dent help for publishing night, instead of having the whole staff present we decided to have only one member from each department on hand to help. Although, on our staff we had an Editor and an Assis- tant Editor it was decided from then on to adopt the system of Co-Editors. We also did a bit of interior decorating on the walls of the bookroom and the headliner machine table by covering them with washable wallpaper. Several etchings of Indians were drawn on the walls and the pin up boards were covered with red and blue materials. We all learned alot when it came to cooperation and all in all it was a very intriguing experience. Staff members hurry to meet deadline. This year the Capac Future Farmers of America (FFA) is recognized as one of the largest in the state. It is also one of the best, having received gold chapter ratings for the past two years. The FFA is the only club in the school which keeps its activities going throughout the summer. During the summer months members participate in such activities as judging clinics, recreation, and livestock and crop exhibits at several fairs. Each year the chapter participates and receives awards in several contests: District Soil Judging contest, MSU Poultry contest, Leadership contests, and the state Agriculture Skills contest. The chapter sends delegates to the National Convention in Kansas City, the State Convention in East Lansing, and the new officers to Regional Leadership Training Camp. Besides leadership activities, members carry on their own supervised agricultural experience projects, either on the farm or in agri-business. Members of the Capac chapter have been honored as award winners and officers of both the state and the regional organization. One of the highlights of the year comes at the annual FFA Banquet, when members are awarded for their efforts throughout the year. We played at all the home football games and done such things as having the seniors dancing to the Twist and fire baton routines with the majorettes. Our last game which would have been our finest performance, was froze out at the last minute. We went to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for Band Day for the first time in three years. We had to wear garbage bags for raincoats dur- ing practice because it was raining so hard. But later it cleared up and the rest of the day went very well. But this was cancelled because we got one of the biggest snowstorms of the year the day of the concert. When basketball season started, members that wanted to, joined the Pep Band to provide music and entertainment during the home games. Second semester a wind ensemble of the better bandsman was organized to play more challenging music and perform at our spring concert. In the last week of February we gave a winter concert and performed our festival music and a few other selections. Music is an ancient yet modern art which enhances man ' s ability to communicate on a higher level. Whether the music is from the Rennisance era or from our time, rock, country music, orchestral works jazz and blues, it all extends a “hand of communication to the listener from the performer and vice versa. The Capac High School Vocal Music Department is a group who tries to extend their hand of com- munication to the immediate community through concerts and special performances by the choirs and the newly established Fine Arts Ensemble. The two major choirs, Mixed and Girl ' s, perform for the main con- certs and any special choir festivals that involve whole choirs and not just select ensembles and soloists. They hope that the coming seasons will get them involved in more concerts than now. The Fine Arts Ensemble extends their hand by performing for various clubs and organizations in the community. Their audience is usually small which creates a better bond of communication. The members of the Ensemble are all tops in the choral groups which gives them a chance to improve upon their musical talents by the means of more frequent performances and also the Wednesday night drill sessions where vocal technique is stressed. Overall, Capac ' s choral groups are ever growing and improving. In years to come, we hope to make our community more aware of the arts and their importance in everyday life. The arts are an important part and the better we can perform them the better the hand of communication can reach out and touch peo- ple. This page sponsored by A. The Girls ' Athletic Association has been steadily growing to include a membership of 127 girls as it enters its sixth year of existence. Though there are fewer sports this year, because of the energy crisis and limited use of the gym, participation and enthusiasm of the girls has again proved this to be a very successful and necessary program in our school. Besides being just a sports program the GAA has helped run the football concession stand and completely ran the basketball concession stand. Many thanks to Ms. Barbara Red- ding for making this a very successful year. 86 This page sponsored by GIRLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION 7TH 8TH GIRL’S ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION FIRST ROW: Left to Right: Margaret Dukatz, Melanie Markwart, Wendi Sieggreen, ]anet Lietz - Treasurer, Kathy Brozowski, Secretary, Kelly Mackey - President, Mary-Beth Kersten Vice-Pres. The Junior High Girls Athletic Association is an organization any junior high girl may join if she wishes. Activities this year include competition in volleyball, badmin- ton, basketball, table tennis, indoor hockey, gymnastics, softball, and track. Besides these activities, five girls attended a basketball clinic at Central Michigan University, five attended a state volleyball tournament, and girls ran concession stands for all junior high games. During the year we held a G.A.A. dance and will look forward to a spring banquet for parents and students at which time awards will be handed out. 87 VARSITY CLUB FIRST ROW: Left to Right: Nancy Wheeler-Treasurer, Anita Stuever- Secretary, Kurt Robinson-President, Jack Armstrong-Advisor. Varsity Club sells hotdogs for 35c. 88 JOY OF VICTORY AND AGONY OF DEFEAT It ' s all well to have courage and skill And it ' s fine to be counted a star, But the single deed with its touch of thrill Doesn ' t tell us the man you are; For there ' s no lone hand in the game we play, We must work to a bigger scheme, And the thing that counts in the world today Is, How do you pull with the team? They may sound your praise and call you great, They may single you out for fame, But you must work with your running mate Or you will never win the game; Oh never the work of life is done By the man with a selfish dream. For the battle is lost or the battle is won By the spirit of the team. You may think it fine to be praised for skill. But a greater thing to do Is to set your mind and set your will On the goal that ' s just in view; It ' s helping your fellow man to score When his chances hopeless seem; It ' s forgetting self till the game is o ' er And fighting for the team.
