Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1973 volume:

CAPACIAN The year of 1972-73, what has it meant to you as a functioning unit of the school system, a citizen of the United States, and as a child of the universe? For eighth grade students it was the beginning of their final school years and the beginning of many unforgettable times. For seniors it was the beginning of the end. They watched and played their last athletic events attended their final ball and prom, and sat through their last classes. Each day brought them closer to the final time when they walked through the halls as students of Capac High. But the year didn’t only bring endings; it brought new beginnings. Computerized schedules, new victories and defeats, new teachers, hopes of a new school, and new experiences also came. In the nation we also had beginnings and endings. We saw the end of life for two former presidents, death in war and domestic tragedies. But new life began each day and lives were saved by our advanced technology. The Apollo space program came to a successful end with hope for new beginnings of further exploration. We joyfully and thankfully greeted the end of the Vietnam war which enabled our ser- vicemen and P.O.W.’s to begin life anew. Each moment, each day that passes, closes one door but holds another open to shine a glimpse of a new light. The light of challenge, research, progress, beginnings and endings, life. Nanine Parker, editor Sally Castillo, assistant editor CAPAC COMMUNITY SCHOOLS Capac, Michigan RUTH N. BACON The staff of the 1973 Capacian dedicate this book in memory of Mrs. Ruth N. Bacon. Ruth was a completely posititive person. She con- tributed unselfishly to the field of education and to the total community. She established a living legacy through her positive influence on the lives and careers of countless individuals. Ruth N. Bacon will long be remembered. It performs several other services to the school, such as assemblies, scholarships, and purchasing new equipment for the school. The year’s first major project was the magazine drive. This year, for the first time, we gave each class 10% of the profits it earned, as well as prizes for top individuals. Homecoming Week, with the theme “Disneyland” ended with the Homecoming dance, which was a huge success for everyone. We visited many of the shut- ins and hope we filled them with joy as we were. After the carolling we had a party. In March we had our annual Latin Banquet. Slaves were auctioned off by Mrs. Clarkson, and bought by the members of the royal court. After our feast, games were played. Our ac- tivities in Latin Club were very enjoyable and will always be remembered. We were moving quite slowly at the beginning of the year but seemed to get into the rushing world about Christmas time by making pinatas. All were brightly decorated and ready to be broken by a child’s swing of the bat. This is one of the projects we hope will bring us closer to our goal, a Spanish Dinner in the spring. 12 Page co-sponsors THE LATIN CLUB and VIVIAN’S BEAUTY SHOP DEBATE TEAM Jim Clark-Capac’s high point speaker. The debate topic for this year was, “Resolved: That all governmental financial support for public elementary and secondary education in the United States be provided ex- clusively by the federal government.” Capac’s debate squad finished fourth in the eleven team Blue Water league with a league record of 12 wins and 8 losses. The overall season’s record was 18 and 12. This second year of com- petition represented a substantial improvement over last year. Capac’s high point speaker was Jim Clark who took part in 11 of Capac’s 18 victories and averaged 25 points per debate. The FFA is a national organization of students preparing for agriculture careers. It is intra-curricular, organized by and for students of vocational agriculture. The major aim is to develop agricultural leadership, citizenship, and cooperation. Nearly 500,000 members in 9,000 chapters learn through active participation in many activities. Members can participate in contests and earn degrees, offices, and awards in the chapter, district, regional, state, and national levels. They also participate in leadership activities, recreation, community service, agri- business jobs, and their own supervised farming programs. The chapter finances all its activities through sales of cider, seeds, Easter plants, and citrus fruits. It also earns money raising corn and beef steers. Future Teachers of American was formed in 1937 to encourage students to consider teaching as a career. Although it still provides career exploration experiences, there is a new change in the purpose and programs of the organization. The main purpose of FT A is now to represent the interests of high school students in their education and to involve them in improving education. For this reason, the Capac chapter has changed its name to American Youth for Education (AYE). Some activities of the club are college tours, Student-Teacher dialogs, Cadet Teaching, Teacher Assistance projects, and various money-making activities. In the past, several local members have served as MFTA State officers. Presently Anita Stuever is ser- ving as State President and Mrs. Crake is on the State Advisor’s Council. This past summer, we marched in Armada and Capac Homecoming Parades, St. Clair Fireman’s Day Parade, Port Huron Blue Water Festival, Algonac Pickerel Festival, Romeo Peach Festival, and Richmond Good Old Days Parade. Our efforts paid off, for we won first place trophies in the Romeo and Armada parade competition. Kahn, R.N. formed the Capac Chapter of the National Association of Future Nurses. In 1958, Mrs. Carl Lang, R.N. joined Mrs. Kahn as club sponsor. We were first known as the Future Nurses Club, but in the fall of 1970, we changed our name to Health Careers Club, so that we might interest boys as well as girls in all medical fields. Our function and purpose is to interest students. Members of our club look into all aspects of medicine by helping with health projects, health clinics, and volunteer work at the hospital. Each is required to do 24 hours of volunteer work and maintain a C+ average in school work. Many in- teresting speakers have highlighted our club meetings. We work at the County Clinic. Our Freshman Class started off the year on the right foot by choosing as our sponsors Mr. Mattew Hess and Mr. Dennis Weston. The first big event of the year was Homecom- ing week. Our float, “Pluto Loves Devils Dogfood”, was a big success. We won first place. Sherrie Nelson represented our class as Homecoming princess. We sponsored a sophomore appreciation dance on Jan. 27. Our band was D.A. and the Wittnesses. All in all, the first year of our four long years in high school, was the greatest. Our Sophomore Class started out this year by electing: Debbie Bentley, president; Rhonda Brooks, vice-president; Cindy Bollaert, secretary; and Tim Spiller, treasurer. Our first excitement of the year was Homecoming Week. An excitement it was, for we won the Spirit Jug for the first time. Although we won the Spirit Jug, our float “A Spoon full of Chiefs makes the Devils go down didn ' t make it far through the homecoming night with the drizzling rain. We elected Cindy Traub to reign as princess. Later in the year we elected Sandy Carroll and Don Mann to reign as princess and prince at the Christmas Ball. The biggest excietment of this year is our class rings which arrived in March. The first question of the class meetings before this seemed to be ‘‘When are our class rings coming? 64 This Page Sponsored by — THE CLASS OF 1975 Theresa Abshier Debbie Bentley Theresa Bolday Cindy Bollaert Mitch Bollaert Sandy Bowman Bruce Bradley Rhonda Brooks Steve Brozowski Mike Brusati Sandra Carroll Teresa Castillo Mary Ann Castle Sheryl Chisholm Brad Chrysler Kurt Clark Joe Cook Lucy Detroyer Rhonda Diggs Bruce Downey Brenda Edgerton Linda Eldridge Teresa Evans Peggy Eynon Cheryl Farrow Randy Friedsberg Laurie Gajda Sue Galarneau 65 66 Becky Ginn Joe Goheen Robert Guzman , Sherry 1 Hayden Veronica Hayost Mike Hetzel Phil Honsinger Leon Jamison Ed Jubenville Kevin Jum Steve Kamidoi Sue Kaufman Denise Kegler Laurie Keller Bob Kersten Fred Kinzer Vicki Knol Diane Kondrath Dave Koning Jim Lang Cary Libkie Chuck Lumbardo Coleen Mackey Jim Makowske Lorinda Malburg Tim Manuszak Charles Martinez Mary Ann Matichuck Merline McClellan Bryon McCoy This Page Sponsored By — VANPOPPEL1N DRUG STORE Brad Mclver Tino Medrano Tom Miller Greg Mills Larry Murray tit ) JoEllen Neuman Jim Niezgoda Jesse Nino Bill Norwood Joe Nowak JoJean Nuszkiewicz Dennis Obertein Gerald Opificius Doug Palecki Bob Palmateer Denise Paschick Diana Perez Kent Perkins Steve Peters Vena Prevo Pam Rhody Denise Rodzos Ramona Ruper Dan Ryan Ron Saelens Diana Salerno Gilbert Sanchez Stephanie Sawicki Judy Schocke Annette Schulz This Page Sponsored By — CAPAC AUTO SUPP LY 67 Cindy Schwartzkopf Mitch Schwartzkopf Donna Sheldon Greg Smith David Spencer Tim Spiller Mark Stern Kim Stroup Dale Stuever Cindy Traub Jean Wainwright Chuck Waters Debbie White Mike Wilson Curtis Withun Mark Wittstock Sally Wohl Donna Woodward Cindy Worth Sharon Young Paul Trudelle Bob VanNorman 68 CLASS OF 1974 The Junior Class started out the year with new officers: President, Sally Castillo; Vice President, Jim Nettnay; Secretary, Anita Stuever; and Treasurer, Donna Brozowski.
