Freshmen may pursue a course in typing and the following year enroll in general business, or they may begin their typing as sophomores. All other courses are offered to juniors and seniors except for office education which is designed for seniors interested in office employment or further study in business colleges. Business skills and office education, courses tailored in a business setting to provide experiences in various disciplines required in a business office, are two new offerings implement- ed into this year ' s curriculum. Here students are improving previously learned skills as well as gaining new experiences in the use of various office machines. Eighth grade learns basic skills. In 1957, when Sputnik first aroused America to the need for better scientific training, the mathematics program in Capac High School was limited to about four level, some taught only in alter- nate years. Now seven different levels of math- ematics are offered every year. There are eleven classes with almost half the students in grades 9-12 enrolled in a class. Three teachers are employed part time in this department. The classes offered are general math, Introductory Algebra I and II, Algebra I and II, geometry, and Senior Math. Through this program, every student is offered the opportunity to take as many years of mathematics as his needs require. Some may stop with a competency in general math and others may continue through four years until they are prepared for college cal- culus. Geometrics-leamlng by doing. The student works approximately half of a day on the job while being en- rolled in a vocational class which has some relation to the job. The student is also enrolled in a Coop class which meets once a day and is designed to round out his training by bringing in topics that are important on the job such as: Employer-employee relation- ships, attitudes on the job, and various other items designed to help the student. 1 1 COOKS Mrs. Bernice Mills, Mrs. Margaret Campbell, and Mrs. Glassford. Our first spark was to construct our float for our Nursery Rhyme Homecoming. We showed quite a bit of spirit during the spirit week, and participated in the activities during the week. We chose Lucy Detroyer to repre- sent our class as homecoming princess. The sophomores officially initiated us into the high school in mid-November. We all had to wear white socks, and the girls had to wear dresses below the knee and red lip- stick. The boys had to grease their hair back and roll their pant legs up. We were all honored at a dance with the band Shake Down presenting the music. We thanked the Sophomore Class with a dance in February. In December, Greg Smith and Cindy Bollaert represented our class as prince and princess at the annual Christmas Ball. 22 THIS PAGE SPONSORED BY THE CLASS OF ' 75 Theresa Abshier Rudy Amador Debbie Bentley Theresa Bolday Cindy Bollaert Mitchell Bollaert Bruce Bradley Rhonda Brooks Steven Brozowski Michael Brusati Sandy Carroll Teresa Castillo Mary Ann Castle Bradley Chrysler Kurt Clark Joe Cook Leslie Cook Charles Dulaney Cheryl Den ry ter Lucy Detroyer Bruce Downey Brenda Edge rt on Linda Eldridge Peggy Eynon Cheryl Farrow Peggy Ferrett Randy Friedsberg Laurie Gajda Sue Galarneaw Becky Ginn THIS PAGE SPONSORED BV RAY ' S GULF SERVICE Veronica Hayost Mike Hetzel Philip Honsinger Leon Jamison Ed Jubenville Kevin Jum Steve Kamidoi Susan Kaufman Denise Kegler Laurie Keller Bob Kersten Fred Kinzer Vicki Knop Diane Kondrath David Koning Dean Koves Jim Lang Cary Libkie Charles Lumbardo Coleen Mackey Jim Makowske Lorinda Malburg Tim Manuzak Charles Martinez Merlin McCl ellan THIS PAGE SPONSORED BY VILLAGE LAUNDRY and FAMILY STORE 24 Bryon McCoy Brad M elver Faustino Medrano Jon Melland Jim Miller x Tom Miller Greg Mills Lawrence Murray Jo Ellen Neuman Jim Niezgoda Jesse Nino Bill Norwood Joe Nowak Jo Jean Nuszkiewicz Dennis Obertein Gerald Opificius Doug Palecki Bob Palmateer Diana Perez Kent Perkins Steven Peters Pam Rhody Ramona Ruper Daniel Ryan Ron Saelens Diana Salerno Gilbert Sanchez Stephanie Sawicki Judy Schocke Annette Schulz THIS PAGE SPONSORED BY CHRYSLER T S FLOWERS 25 Cindy Schwartzkoph Mitchell Schwartzkoph Cheryl Seelman (Chisholm) Greg Smith Terrle Smith Tim Spiller Chuck Waters Debbie White Mark Stem Kim Stroup Dale Stuever Cindy Traub Paul Trudelle Bob Van Norman Curtis Withun Mark Wittstock Sally Wohl Donna Woodward Cindy Worth Sharon Young this page sponsored Bv WM. Elayne Barr was our homecoming princess. Making a decision on the style of our class ring was difficult, but we managed to tackle that problem. They arrived during the spring season. In one way they are. but sports represent accomplish- ment; the satisfaction of having a goal or objective and striving for it. The striving may be successful or unsuc- cessful. but that doesn ' t matter so much if the player feels he had given his best. The road may be hard but the obstacles overcome remain a cherished memory. And many are the friendships that owe their beginnings to some shared sport! -Harry Moore. Athletic Director. Wrestling, one of the most ancient sport activities known to man. was introduced to Capac during the 1970-71 school year. The popularity of the sport is beginning to grow in the school and in the sports world. The activity of wrestling is one of the very few sports that participants compete against others of their own weight, even so it is one of the most physically exhausting activities. From wrestling, participants can develop ex- cellent physical fitness and strength, an ability to protect themselves, and a degree of self confidence-each one a vital ingredient for adequate prepara- tion for life. -Coach. The National Honor Society was established to recognize students of good character who maintain high scholastic records. Members must also show leadership qualities, and be willing to give of their time in service for others. Membership is limited to 15% of the Sen- ior Class, and 12% of the Junior Class en- rollment. At the spring induction ceremony 10% of the members of the Sophomore Class who meet the requirements are pledged. If these students maintain their scholastic averages, they are accepted as full members in the fall of their junior year. The Capac Chapter is primarily a service group. Members take tickets at athletic events and perform various other tasks for the school. As a money making project, mem- bers dressed as clowns and sold balloons at the Homecoming parade. Most of the activities are of a social nature, in- cluding an annual Christmas carolling party. The most im- portant spring event is the annual Roman Banquet. THIS PAGE SPONSORED BY C.H.S. LATIN CLUB DEBATE TEAM Interscholastic debate is formal argu- mentation in which students research and speak on the same topic for an entire season. This year’s topic was ’’Resolved: that the jury system in the United States should be significantly changed.” Four people, two on the affirmative side and two on the negative side, take part in each debate. Strict time limits are followed and a col- lege debater serves as judge in each match. He awards victory to the side which advances the stronger arguments and supports them more successfully with evidence. Good organ- ization and delivery also count heavily in this decision. This year Capac competed in the Lower Thumb Debate League which includes Caro, Cass City, Bad Axe, Frankenmuth, Millington, Sandusky and Owendale - Gagetown. Although we completed the season with 3 wins and 11 losses, we did acquire much valuable expe- rience which will help us in our second year of competition. The Capac Future Teachers Club has one main goal. This goal is to give interested young people an opportunity to explore the field of education as a possible career. The local chapter is affiliated with the state and national organization. The Club is a service organization in that it is involved with the C. E. A. in providing a scholarship grant each year to a young person who wishes to become a teacher. Club mem- bers also work in the community school as they wish. The Club was organized in 1960. Several local club members have served in state of- fices. More than twenty past members of the Capac Future Teachers Club are now teach- ing in Michigan and as far away as Germany, South America, and Africa. It was organized in November, 1928, and has grown to a member- ship of almost 500,000. Individual achievement and cooperative activities are the theme of the FFA. Individuals are encouraged to participate in contests and earn degrees and awards in the chapter, district, regional, state and national levels; and to attend state and national conven- tions. The FFA finances all of its trips and activ- ities, such as beef projects, corn projects, seed sales, and plant sales, and others. Many of the students have sizeable incomes from their own projects. STUDENT LIBRARIANS The library is a materials- resource center, designed to serve needs of students from grades 8 to 12. It provides not only books, magazines, newspapers but also films, records, filmstrips, and handles all audio-visual equip- ment. The library contains approximately 500 books, which includes all encyclopedias, reference books, many paper- backs, 400 filmstrips, and 50 records and science trans- parencies. The library is staffed with one librarian and two stu- dent librarians for each hour. These students have com- pleted a one-semester course in library science and thus are able to handle many of the duties in the library. These include assisting students, preparing books and magazines for circulation, typing orders, filing cards, and keeping the materials in order. One of the duties of the librarian is to provide the audio-visual equipment for the teachers and students. The equipment consists of 16mm film projectors, 8mm loop projectors, filmstrip projectors, record players, tape recorders and a video-tape machine which can be used to tape programs, individual speeches and demonstrations, and athletic games. The equipment is handled by the projectionists who see that it reaches the room as requested by the teacher and who operate the equipment when needed. Each student, of which we now have eight, is given individual training in the use of each piece of equipment before he is permitted to operate it. These students also show films for community groups when school equipment is used. The functions of Student Council are more than just approving parties or money-making projects for classes and clubs. Our first major role came with the magazine sale. We had good participation from all the classes and the sale was a huge success. While the final weeks of the sale was going on, Homecoming week arrived. We had to set up the major activities of the school. After the Homecoming game, we put on the Homecoming dance which was a complete success and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Christmas rolled around the same time as usual and the Council wanted to do something special. So a com- mittee was set up and we decided to send $50.00 to the Port Huron Tunnel Relief Fund. We also thought about our teachers and staff. Each received a package of candy to show our appreciation, which we bought from the Lap- eer Home to help their funds. We bought new bleachers for the football field which were put to good use during the season. We also gave out three senior scholarships and two junior scholarships. 80 this page sponsored bv CARDINAL STYLING CENTER YEARBOOK STAFF 11 p it y ■ KJ == w’ ' 1 J| j l , m .
